London and Middlesex / Sion College,London
« on: Sunday 02 October 22 10:06 BST (UK)  »
I would like to find out more about Sion College in London (see post "Too Many Morgans"). It was founded in 1650 for "the education and fellowship of C of E clergy". Was it a school with young pupils or was it a library where the clergy could go to study? I do not know where my ancestor David Walter Morgan (1733--1795) was educated prior to his entry to Cambridge (matric 1753).He was cared for by his uncle Rev. John Morgan (1698-1778) who was described as "being of Sion College" as his mother had died when he was young. If Sion College was not a school as such ,perhaps he was educated privately by his uncle.

The Common Room / Use of Latin in Parish Registers
« on: Friday 26 September 14 21:59 BST (UK)  »
I have been trying to research ancestors with the surname Morgan in London in the 17th century and found  names such as Gulielmus and Johanis. As I am also trying to trace a link with families of Hugeunot descent I thought I had found something of significance. However I then realized that a more likely explanation is that some Parish records were recorded in Latin . I would be interested to know if it is true that using Latin was at the discretion of the clerk or whoever was responsible for writing up the records.

Census and Resource Discussion / FindmyPast address search
« on: Friday 12 September 14 18:00 BST (UK)  »
I was so disastified with the Findmy Past changes that I let my membership lapse. However I was tempted back by their half price offer and the assurances that most of the problems had been overcome. Specifically that it was still possible to do census address searches. However after having a go I fail to see how you can get into the records by entering a place rather than a persons name. Any tips?

Kent / Seal or Deal?
« on: Thursday 12 September 13 21:00 BST (UK)  »
I am tracing some ancestors and there seems some confusion whether they were from Deal on the Kent coast or Seal near Sevenoaks. My gtX3 grandfather Henry George Steer(1793--1854)was b.Spitalfields and married Elizabeth Lawrence  1815 Camberwell. My gtx2 grandfather John Francis Steer was b.1822 Lambeth.Brother Henry George Steer(1817-1872)was b. Bermondsey but brother Thomas Steer (1828-1880)appears to have been born at Deal (or Seal).Henry George jnr. m.1839 AnnSarah E Steer who I believe was his cousin. She was b.1815 Seal (or Deal) and was the daughter of George Thomas Steer who was b.1790 or 1796.He was the brother of Henry George Steer snr. Some transcriptions give the place as Seal and some as Deal.It is hard to tell from the censuses. It is Henry George Steer snr that I am most interested in.On his son John`s marriage record he is described as "gentleman".I may have found him on a later census as "general dealer".How long was he living at Seal(or Deal)?

Gloucestershire / James Spratt Stroud 1790,Non Conformist records
« on: Friday 17 May 13 13:33 BST (UK)  »
I have been rather stuck with an ancestor James Spratt (1791--1846).His wife`s name was Sarah but I have not been able to find their marriage. They were living at Dudbridge,Stroud in 1841 with sons Ambrose b.1823 and James b.1826.I have just discovered some non conformist records and think this might be where to look for the marriage.I have found Ambrose Spratt chr.30th Mar 1823,Forest Green Chapel,Nailsworth Independant,Avening.A possible wife for James Spratt is Sarah Munday (or Monday)b.1790 The Tabernacle Calvinistic Methodist,Wootton under Edge. Her parents were George and Elizabeth. Also James Spratt chr.20th Oct 1793,Presbyterian Old Town Meeting House,Wootton under Edge.Ambrose Spratt (1822--1907) married Eleanor Dalby and moved to London to be a warehouseman.Brother James (1826--1897) married Sarah and worked as a wood turner. He moved to Birmingham but later returned to the Stroud area.I believe he could have married Sarah Warner in 1847.The parents of James Spratt senior could have been Thomas Spratt and Mary Broughton. There is a marriage 20th May 1787 Uley ML.Any ideas what ML stands for?

London and Middlesex / Too many Morgans!
« on: Wednesday 24 April 13 22:04 BST (UK)  »
I am having another go at trying to trace my ancestor David Walter Morgan b.1732-3 died 1795 who was priest in ordinary at the Chapel Royal,Westminster. He lived at St.James Palace and has a plaque in Westminster Abbey. His cambridge and Oxford University records give his father as William of St.Georges,Southwark.I thought I had found a record for David Walter Morgan bapt.1733 St.George the Martyr but have been unable to re find it.I have found a record for David Morgan b.16th Jan 1732 St.James,Westminster son of William and Martha. There is also a marriage of William Morgan and Martha Wood 15th May 1731 St.James,Westminster.William Morgan had a brother John Morgan who died 1778.He was rector of Little Leighs in Essex until his death and was succeded in this post by his nephew David.I am trying to establish a link possibly by marriage with the wealthy Olmius family who were patrons of the Morgans.

Family History Beginners Board / What does "alias" mean
« on: Monday 01 April 13 22:02 BST (UK)  »
I came across "Mary Le Hunte alias Lloyd of the City of Cashel, County Tipperary" I am assuming that " alias" means nee   and that Mary`s  surname was Lloyd before she married Mr Le Hunte.I had thought that researching the aristocratic Anglo-Irish Le Hunte family would be relatively easy on account of their position in society and uncommon name but this has not proved to be the case.FindMyPast cannot seem to cope with the name at all.Even where they appear in census they seem to be overlooked. One complication is that they owned property in Wexford and Pembrokeshire and as many of the births marriages and deaths happened in Ireland they do not show up.I have not done any research in Ireland and would not know where to start.FamilySearch have some records but less than I would have expected bearing in mind their status, owning land and holding important positions such as High Sherriff of Ireland.

Lincolnshire / Is this the right Rebecca Brackenbury?
« on: Saturday 23 March 13 09:57 GMT (UK)  »
I have recently been enquiring on the Common Room board about an ancestor William (Brackenbury) Truman who was the illegitimate son of Rebecca Brackenbury  baptized Revesby 1811.I was wondering whether his father might have been a William Truman b.Wisbech 1786.Another Brackenbury descendant,Martie has looked for the birth of Rebecca Brackenbury and wonders whether she might have been b.at Hammeringham(near Revesby) on 5/11/1786.Parents given as John Brackenbury and Susanna Allbones, married 1783.We seem to have become rather stuck and would welcome suggestions on how to get any further.

The Common Room / William Trueman ,who was his father?
« on: Friday 15 March 13 18:24 GMT (UK)  »
William Trueman (Brackenborough) was the illegitimate son of Rebecca Brackenborough and was born at Asgarby ( or thereabouts) Lincolnshire in 1811.It is likely that he knew his father as he changed his name later in life.He married at Outwell Norfolk in 1835.The census of 1841 gives his occupation as blacksmith but later he was a farmer and a  publican.I have discovered a William Truman born Wisbech 1786 who in 1881 was living at Gainsborough,Lincs. He was 95 a widower and living with Richard Kay a blacksmith and his family, relationship given as uncle. In 1871 a William Truman age 84,retired farmer was living at Boston,Lincs with wife Sarah age 57.It looks as if his place of birth was Guyhirn(near Wisbech) and Sarah`s was Outwell.  A William Truman was born Wisbech 1789, to Isaac and Mary who were married at Wisbech."My" William Truman named his son Isaac. He also had a brother John (this is the William Truman who I am trying to prove was "my" William`s father) who I may have found in1861 occupation given as "artist, animal Painter"Incidently the Richard Kay mentioned earlier was born 1841 at Upwell (near Outwell).I cannot find any more about these Trumans which is rather frustrating.
