Lancashire / Sightings of Photographer Pollard Graham
« on: Wednesday 12 March 08 07:15 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for any sightings of the photographic studio of Pollard Graham - later Pollard Graham & Co. or Pollard Graham & Son - in the towns of Leigh, Southport and Wigan, in Lancashire, please. I have already some records, partly taken from trade directories on the excellent Historical Directories web site, but would appreciate anything more that Lancashire researchers can dig up.

- 59 Leigh Road, Leigh c.1891-1902
- Southport c.1884-1887
- Borough Studio, Market Place, Wigan 1890s
- Borough Studio, 22 Market Square, Wigan c.1898-1902

I am particularly interested in finding dates and an address for the studio in Southport, which appears to only have been open for a few years in the mid-1880s.

Many thanks. Regards and best wishes,

Lancashire / ID of mansion around Liverpool or Bolton
« on: Wednesday 18 October 06 02:18 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to identify a large residential building or mansion from an old photograph, and wonder whether any knowledgeable folk from the Liverpool and Bolton areas might be able to help, please.

The photograph is a carte de visite (cdv), unfortunately without photographer's details, but comes from an album containing similar cdvs predominantly from the 1860s and 1870s, and mainly from studios in Liverpool and Bolton.  I would estimate that this particular photo, shown below, was taken around 1865-1870.

Only two of the photos in the album have captions indicating who the subjects were, with the surnames SHALLCROSS (Liverpool) and BRIMELOW (Bolton) and I have done some research through the census records to outline the family structure.  There is also what looks like a miniature business card with the name "W.P. Roberts."

I'd be grateful for any help in identifying the building.  Many thanks.

The Common Room / Identification of initials
« on: Tuesday 17 October 06 09:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi.  I'm looking for some help with the identification of the following initials, please.  They come from the cover of an old photo album, and I'm trying to ascertain who the owner was.  Unfortunately, I haven't been able to make up my mind what I think of these.  It would also be nice to have examples of these initials being used elsewhere, to confirm what they are.

Many thanks for any help received.

Perthshire / 1851/1861 MacINTYRE Blair Atholl, Perth
« on: Monday 24 April 06 00:59 BST (UK)  »
I have found the following marriage and baptisms for a family in which I have an interest, and would be very grateful for a sighting of them in either the 1851 or 1861 Census, please?

Malcolm MacINTYRE b. ?? m: 26 Jun 1845 Row, Dunbarton SCT Marjory MacINTOSH b. ??

- Peter (aka Patrick) McINTYRE b. 5 Jun 1846 Blair Atholl
- Catherine McINTYRE b. 2 Feb 1848 Blair Atholl
- Rachel McINTYRE b. 3 Apr 1850 Blair Atholl
- Jessie McINTYRE b. 10 Dec 1852 Blair Atholl
- Marjory McINTYRE b. 10 Dec 1854 Blair Atholl

I'd be grateful for any help.  It's possible that they moved around a bit.  According to other records, Malcolm MacINTYRE was variously a land agent and a gamekeeper, and Peter/Patrick's death certificate stated that he was born in Dumbarton!  Another address given for Patrick's parents was "Lochgilphead, Argyllshire," and Patrick later studied medicine in Glasgow, graduating in 1869.

Lanarkshire / Robert Valentine MOODIE Glasgow
« on: Sunday 23 April 06 00:31 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for any information on Robert Valentine MOODIE, who according to his Canadian Expeditionary Force Attestation Paper was born in Glasgow on 14 February 1886.  I would like any sightings, including the 1891 and/or 1901 Census, and a birth/baptism record, which might tell me who his parents were, as well as the names of his siblings, please.

Prior to emigrating to Canada "Bob" Moodie, as he was known, served for four years in the 1st Dunbartonshire M.I. (I'm not sure what the "M.I." stands for, but M is probably Militia).  He enlisted in the Canadian Army Service Corps in Winnipeg, Manitoba, along with my grandfather Charles Leslie Lionel Payne (1892-1975) and Scottish friend, George Henderson Willox (1886-1970), on 11 November 1914.  All three served together for most of the war in the Canadian Machine Gun Corps, and you can read of my ongoing research into their WW1 experiences on my ongoing blog Grandpa's War.

Any information, advice or other help will be very gratefully received.

Dunbartonshire / 1851/1861 Census Dunbartonshire MacINTYRE
« on: Tuesday 18 April 06 11:43 BST (UK)  »
I would be very grateful for a lookup in the 1851 or 1861 Census, please.  I'm searching for Patrick MacINTYRE, who was reputedly born at Helensburgh, Dunbartonshire in about 1846, son of Malcolm MacINTYRE and Marjory MacINTOSH.

I found a marriage for his parents on 26 Jun 1845 at Row, Dunbarton, but no sign of his birth on the IGI.  I also found the births of some possible other children of Malcolm MacINTYRE and Marjory MacINTOSH on the IGI, as follows:

Peter McINTYRE b. 5 Jun 1846 Blair Atholl, Perth
Catherine McINTYRE b. 2 Feb 1848 Blair Atholl
Rachel McINTYRE b. 3 Apr 1850 Blair Atholl
Jessie McINTYRE b. 10 Dec 1852 Blair Atholl
Marjory McINTYRE b. 10 Dec 1854 Blair Atholl

However, I have no real evidence that it's the same family, apart from the parents' names being the same.  Patrick MacINTYRE was probably in New Zealand by around 1870, so is not likely to appear on the 1871 Census.

It would be great to find him with his parents in a census, and then perhaps I can look for a birth record.  I'd appreciate any help.

I am looking for a marriage between Robert CRIDLAND and his wife Mary, some time prior to c. 1837 in the area around Alveston and Almondsbury in South Gloucestershire, and would be very grateful for a lookup in a Gloucestershire Marriage Index, please.

I have the family in the 1851 Census, living in Alveston.  Robert was born c. 1795 at North Petherton SOM and Mary was born c. 1803 at Almondsbury GLS.  The oldest children shown on the 1851 Census appear to be twins named Robert and Richard, both born c. 1837 at Alveston.  Mary would have been in her early 30s at this time, so it's quite possible that there were older children and that their marriage took place as early as c. 1825.

Thanks very much in advance for any help.  In return, I'd be happy to help out with any South Derbyshire research, with which I am far more familiar.

Derbyshire / Victorian & Edwardian Photographic Studios in Derbyshire
« on: Tuesday 18 October 05 00:40 BST (UK)  »
I would like to draw your attention to an online family history resource that I have been compiling for about three years.  My site devoted to Derbyshire Photographers & Photographic Studios is aimed at providing a comprehensive guide to the dating of family history photographs in Derbyshire.

It covers all studio photographers who worked in Derbyshire, but concentrates mainly on Victorian & Edwardian artists i.e. pre-WW1.  I have put together an county-wide index to studio photographers, which may never be definitively complete but is now pretty comprehensive, with over 450 separate entries.  I have also compiled a series of Photographers' Profiles; at present there are 114 of them, representing a quarter of all photographers who worked in Derbyshire.  These profiles have a short biography of each photographer and one or more examples of his/her work.  The latter would not have been possible without the contributions of images from over 90 different people and organizations, for which I am very grateful.

I am always looking for further images of studio photographs to add to the collection on the web site.  If you have any old family photos from Derbyshire, please consider contributing scanned images of them to the collection, which will benefit greatly.  I would be VERY grateful for any images, even if there are plenty of examples from that photographer already on the web site!  Instructions on how to contribute photos may be found here.  Alternatively, please feel free to post a reply to this thread or contact me by email/pm.

In addition, if you have old Derbyshire family photos and would like them dated or have other queries, please feel free to send scanned images to me, and I'll do my best to provide some answers for you.  It is usually possible to date old photos, with a fair degree of confidence, to within 3 or 4 years, and often even more accurately, particularly if the full mount and reverse of the photo are still visible.

Regards and best wishes,

Brett
