Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / FTDNA haplogroups COMPLETED
« on: Saturday 19 March 22 09:42 GMT (UK)  »
I think I have just found the answer - enlarging the screen revealed boxes saying they were as yet unknown. Perhaps I found out my parents' group using one of the other companies.

Good morning,

This is probably a very silly question but is it possible to find out the haplogroups from an FTDNA Family Finder test?

The matches have just been generated for a test I am managing for a male (non blood) relative and I would find it helpful to know.

I don't remember having the same problem working out my haplogroups using my parents' tests!

Thanks,

Liz

Armed Forces / Shornecliffe Army Camp & Barracks
« on: Thursday 06 January 22 14:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I was very excited to find my great uncle at Shornecliffe Army Camp & Barracks in the 1921 census. It is unquestionably him.

I am puzzled though because of the 20 men on the page all but my uncle and one other have their "rank or rating" and "service and branch or arm of service" filled in. Several have -"- type ditto marks but not him so I can't assume he was the same as the line above.

Can anyone suggest why he would be at the camp if he wasn't serving? (He was demobilised in 1919.) To be honest I was expecting to find him in prison (as per family rumour) so this is quite a surprise!

Thank you,

Liz

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Religion query on a German MC
« on: Wednesday 30 September 20 16:49 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I would be grateful to have a second opinion on the religion in these two clips from the same 1908 German MC. (the word before Religion) Here is a link to the whole thing on Ancestry: https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageviewer/collections/2957/images/40087_prep503_000237-00223?treeid=&personid=&hintid=&queryId=9dc6add7bf516923044529477058be93&usePUB=true&_phsrc=Ikg11&_phstart=successSource&usePUBJs=true&_ga=2.4371571.113176917.1601450003-366860400.1440872079&pId=1097965

I have translated it all so don't need help with that (thank you) - just ideas about the "religion" word please. I won't say what I think just yet in case it influences people!

Thank you very much,

Liz

The Common Room / Early 1960s English Marriage Certificate
« on: Sunday 15 December 19 19:28 GMT (UK)  »
Good Evening,

I know there was already a space on the E/W certificate for the rank or profession of both parties in a marriage long before the 1960s but would like to know how common it was for the bride to actually have something in the box.

Before I buy the certificate to confirm (or refute) a theory I have about a relative, I'd like to know if it will actually give her job title - which will be the clincher in identifying her. (In Sussex)

Thank you,

Liz

Ireland / Anna Sarah EWING birth record 1885
« on: Monday 09 July 18 15:21 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I have zero experience of Irish research but have come across Anna Sarah EWING (my b-l's GGM) who was born in 1885 in Sligo according to Familysearch.

I checked this on the www.irishgenealogy.ie site and sure enough, she's there, but it says "Mother's Birth Surname N/R". Does this mean it won't give me any information about her mother? What about her father? I know about her life after her marriage to Thomas JACOB in 1905 and her descendants in England but would like to try a bit of Irish research and seem to have fallen at the first hurdle (well, second, as I did get Thomas' family back a couple of generations  ;D ).

If it is worth me getting a copy of the birth / marriage records would I be right in thinking that the site I've referred to above is the best way to do it - although there doesn't seem to be an online option?

Thank you very much,

Liz

Sussex / Charley Trusler b1854 Steyning (Portslade)
« on: Sunday 10 June 18 19:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Charley Trusler's birth registration is on the FreeBMD index - Q4 1854 Steyning Reg District, 2b 201. Despite all this information I can't find him on the GRO site - I was hoping to find his mother's maiden name as he is proving rather elusive.

I have him marrying Martha Ann Trowbridge (born in Wiltshire Mar 1846) in Brighton 1873 and subsequent census entries and then his death in 1914, but nothing before his marriage. I have tried FindMyPast, Ancestry as well as FamilySearch and the SFHG members' database.

Given that he gives his place of birth as Portslade it is very possible his Trusler line is linked to mine but I have reached something of a dead end.

Any help would be gratefully received.  Thank you!

Hi,

I've attached a screenshot of the parents' column of the marriage of William Scally and Hannah Gray in 1894 in Glasgow.  Here's what I can make out:

1  William Scally
2  ?
3  and
4  Margaret Scally
5  MS ?
6  -
7 ? Gray
8  Dairy Labourer
9  (Deceased) and
10  ? Gray
11  MS ?
12  Deceased

I'd be really grateful if anyone could decipher the MS of each of the mothers!

Thank you,

Liz

Kent / Gravesend electoral roll - late 1950s
« on: Monday 12 June 17 19:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to research the family of someone who I have been told lived in Gravesend during the late 1950s (and possibly early 1960s)  They would have been in their early 20s so I can't give names as they may still be alive.  (I'd like the father's name if possible to cross reference with a marriage certificate.)

My question is - where would I be able to find a copy of the electoral roll for Gravesend for say 1958 - I can't find any clues online.

Also, how likely would it be that a girl from Gravesend would be working as a secretary in a central London office?  I know my mother commuted up from near Brighton everyday so I'm thinking Gravesend would be a possibility too?

Thank you,

Liz

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / X Chromosome - completely identical??
« on: Friday 21 April 17 22:05 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am looking at the Genome View in 23andme and have noticed that 3 people all match each other and my Dad on a section of the X chromosome and it is coloured dark blue to indicate 'completely identical'.  I am trying to get my head round what this means.

I think I am right in saying that Dad got his X from his mother?  If so, presumably these other 3 men are all descended from this branch of our tree too?

But this is where I get muddled.  Could they be descended from either my Granny's mother OR father - not necessarily her mother, as she got an X from each of them?

I hope that makes sense.  I have attached a screenshot of a bit of the chart to show the little match - it puzzles me as to why my match with Dad is only 'half identical' but these three men are all 'completely identical'.  ::)  But there is no question that I am his daughter  ;D

Thanks,

Liz
