Lancashire Lookup Requests / 1851 West Derby/ Huyton - Barker pls
« on: Monday 21 December 09 20:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there

Not an awful lot of known info here, so not sure if this is going to be too hard

I'm looking Paul Barker (who died in 1853), in 1851. I think his wife is Margaret. Don't know how old he would be but he was in the 1832 Liverpool Poll Book of 1832, so would think at least 40

He would possibly be listed as builder/ bricklayer

Many thanks

I think the house might be called Elmsley

Many thanks!  ;)

Lancashire / Apprentice Records
« on: Monday 11 May 09 15:59 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know if Apprentice records are archived anywhere?

I have one original document from 1825 and the information on it has been invaluable. I'd always assumed no central records exist, but would be grateful if someone could confirm

thanks

Lancashire Lookup Requests / 1861 Manchester Look up pls - Heffron
« on: Tuesday 20 January 09 09:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters

I'm trying to be a bit creative in finding more on an ancestor
Bridget Effern b Kilkenny 1816 dies in childbirth in 1846. In 1841 she is with her husband Blucher Ingham at Dam St, Manchester

With them is Patric Heffron  b Ireland aged 25, Cotton Weaver. I'm thinking that Patric is perhaps Bridget's brother taking mis-spellings into account. If I can find out more about him maybe I can find out more about her!

So looking for Patric(k) Heffron aged 30-35 in 1851 in the Manchester area.

Thanks for your help  ;)

Armed Forces / Buying a commission
« on: Wednesday 19 November 08 09:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hi rootschatters

This question is more of a gneral question. You often (especially pre C20th) read of men buying commissions to become an officer. I always wondered how this worked, hoping someone can explain.

Is it men buying the status of an officer with cash?
Is it because they will then receive a regular income for several years or just a vanity thing?

Who receives the cash? The regiment? The previous incumbent? The government?

Thanks in advance!

Norfolk Lookup Requests / 1871 look-up pls Norwich - Peas(e)
« on: Monday 14 January 08 11:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters

Hoping someone can help with this one

I've been looking for Mary Peas(e) b 1799 Shipdam.
I've recently found a burial entry for her at Carbrooke in 1876- listing her as from St Johns Sepulchre, Norwich.

So hoping she's in Norwich in 1871 age about 72

thanks a lot

Lancashire Completed Lookup Requests / 1841 look-up Appleton in Haydock COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 19 December 07 11:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters - second request today, hope this is ok

My prior request answered by Tricia (thanks again) has opened up a big question

In 1841 I see Appletons John 35, Elizabeth 40, David 7 (which all makes sense) on a separate search I can see James and Catherin Wilkinson both 70

They are all at Clipsley Lane folio 11, district 524-08, Haydock

I'm getting my info from an excel summary - it doesn't tell me if these families are together - which I'm hoping they are. If so a fellow researcher has the wrong wife for James

Can a kind person see if they're together (and any occupation info)

Many thanks

EC :)
