One Name Studies: T to Z / WISHER (GOONS #3832)
« on: Wednesday 01 June 05 18:39 BST (UK)  »
My one name study is the surname WISHER, which is predominantly a Midlands name.

I have managed to trace the line back to the late 1600s to east Nottinghamshire.  Various off-shoots migrated into the adjacent counties of Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, Cambridgeshire and Yorkshire, and into London.

Variant spellings I've discovered - WHISHER, WISSAW, WISSER, WISHSHAW, WISHEAR, WISHAW.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / 1861-1871 trades lookup - WYNN
« on: Thursday 26 May 05 22:37 BST (UK)  »
John Denham WYNN was born in Nottingham in 1833.  He apprenticed in jewellry making and set up as a jeweller & silversmith in Nottingham.  In 1857 he married, then sometime after 1859 he & his family moved to London.  I've found them on the 1861 census at 15 Queen Street, Marylebone, and he states that he's a jeweller.

I've tried the Leics Uni Directories site, but nothing on trades directories in London at that time.  I'm trying to pin down where they were between the 1861 and 1871 census.

In the 1871 census, John's wife Susannah is back living in Nottingham with their 3 youngest children and she states she's a widow.  The youngest child, Arthur, was a year old and born in Paddington.

Any help will be gratefully received.

Lincolnshire / WISHER/WISHEAR interests
« on: Thursday 26 May 05 22:17 BST (UK)  »
Just to let everyone know my interest in Lincolnshire.

I'm doing what's called a one name study of my Mum's maiden name, WISHER.  I have an  extensive database on the various families who branched off from the core group in Nottinghamshire.

I have 2 distinct WISHER groups in Lincolnshire:
1) John WISHER & Elizabeth MORRIS married in Spalding in 1819.  John was originally from Burton Joyce, Notts, and this was his 3rd marriage.  Most of their descendants settled in the Spalding, Grimsby, Cleethorpes & Hull areas.
2) James WISHER & Susannah WINDY married in 1798 in Weston.  One of their possible descendants used WISHEAR as his surname, settling in Boston.  Francis Morley WISHEAR was born in 1830 and married Ann ?...don't know where, don't know when.  In the 1861 census, they are living with their 3 children in Boston - Rosamond Annie, Mirriam Jane & Henry G. J. (a.k.a. Morley).

Any information, particularly on the WISHEAR family, would be gratefully received.

Derbyshire / WISHER & DENNY

Just to let everyone know my surname interests in Derbyshire.

I'm doing what's called a one name study on my Mum's maiden name, WISHER.  I have quite an extensive database on the various branches, who appear to have originated near Cotgrave, in Nottinghamshire.  Even if you only have a marriage, I can probably fill in some additional details for you.

As for DENNY, my main interest is with Arthur DENNY, born in 1865 in Coventry.  His parents  were Henry DENNY & Maria TAYLOR, both of Coventry, and when Arthur was 5 the whole family moved to Nottingham.  My 2xgreat-grandfather, James DENNY, is Henry & Maria's oldest son.  Arthur joined  the Sherwood Foresters and served throughout England & Ireland.  His wife, Annie, was from Kilkenny and their two oldest children were also born in Ireland.  The family eventually settled in Normanton, with 3 younger children being born there (per the 1901 census).  Any information on Arthur & his descendants after 1911 would be appreciated.

Cambridgeshire / WISHER & LARRINGTON
« on: Thursday 26 May 05 21:53 BST (UK)  »
Just thought I'd let you know what names I'm interested in from Cambridgeshire.

I'm doing what's called a one name study of my Mum's maiden name, WISHER.  The WISHERs are primarily in Cambridge, though a few contemporary families live in other parts of the county.  I have quite an extensive database on the WISHER families, so even if you only have a marriage in your tree, I likely have something on the person.

I'm also interested in LARRINGTON, as this was my great-grandmother's maiden name.  Edith LARRINGTON was born in 1894 in Coldam, the second daughter of William LARRINGTON &  Lydia KING.  She and my great-grandad, Percy SPENCER, married in Nottingham in 1916.  She was a cook in service, but I have no idea which house.  My Mum recalls Edith taking her on the bus to visit Lydia in Peterborough, so anyone who has connections to the family I'd be interested to hear from.

Just thought I'd introduce myself and let you know what names I'm interested in from Nottinghamshire.

I've been digging up my family history for about 10 years and 5 years ago I joined the Guild of One Name Studies.  I'm doing what's called a one name study of my Mum's maiden name, WISHER.  I'm also doing my direct line on Dad's side, though his family are more recent residents of Nottinghamshire.

Names:
WISHER, WHISHER, WISHAW, WISSAW, etc. in the whole county
WYNN in Radford
DENNY/DENNEY in Radford/Basford
SMITHAM in Sneinton/Radford
FIDDES in Nottingham

I have quite an extensive database on the WISHER families, so even if you only have a marriage in your tree, I likely have something on the person.
