Lanarkshire / Gorbals WW2 Bombing
« on: Saturday 23 March 13 09:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hi folks not been on for a wee while but hope someone can help,

would any posters have any older family members who remember bombing raids in Glasgow in WW II.

I am looking for information on one bombing raid in particular that may have been in the Gorbals or an area close by, this was unusually during the day and where sadly about a dozen young children were found deceased in their chairs whilst attending a birthday party inside a church.

I believe the church was not damaged except for the windows and all the children were killed not by the flying glass but by the shock wave.

horrific but any advice or info would be appreciated.

thanks,

scott

Cumberland / Alfred John Borrowdale born Moffat 3/1/1813 & Parents
« on: Wednesday 27 February 13 16:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hi folks I wonder if someone can help, i am researching for a friend in New Zealand and would like to try and find something out about the above named Alfred.

He was born to Joseph Borrowdale (shipbuilder from Cumberland) and Christian Murray in 1813 in Moffat, Scotland he had some siblings born in Moffat, Mary 20/07/1809,  Margaret 31/12/1810, David 30/06/1816 and another two children believed born in Whitehaven and christened at the Scotch Presbyterian Church, William in 1822 and Christian in 1825.

Now we do not know why but in 1837 at aged 24 he landed in New Zealand and changed his name from Alfred John Borrowdale to John Murray and became a prominent and respected shipbuilder staying there until his death in 1888.

He married into an almost royal like New Zealand Maori family.

His younger brother David Borrowdale seems to have become quite a well known shipbuilder and owner from Whitehaven.

I have attached a document that the family had done some years ago as he was one of the early NZ settlers.

Any advice or help as to what may have made him leave Whitehaven and change his name would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Scott

Guys I would appreciate it if anyone has came across this gentleman Alfred John Borrowdale born 3/1/1813 to John Borrowdale and Christian Murray.

siblings were Mary 20/07/1809, Margaret 31/12/1810, and David 30/06/1816

John stowed away on a ship to New Zealand in 1837 and then assumed the name John Murray, any info on why he might have done this would be appreciated.

Also any info on his parents or siblings.

Many Thanks,

Hi guys,

as mentioned in the title on behalf of a friend looking for Ann Woods who was a tailors assistant and lived in Shaftesbury St, Glasgow around 1969.

She would be possibly in her mid 60's now.

Any information would be appreciated although a long shot I know.

Wigtownshire / Weems/Wemyss Stranraer & Dumfries & Galloway
« on: Tuesday 05 February 13 18:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hi folks I hope someone can advise,

my family on one side goes back to James Weems born 1700 in Stranraer and he married Jean Semple in 1726, I have this confirmed.

does anyone know how the Weems/Wemyss family made the transition pre 1700 to Dumfries & Galloway.

One theory thrown at me was Bishop Henry Weems of D & G 1526 and somehow a line started there.

If true how could this be as it was pre reformation circa 1560 and he would come under the rules of The Roman Catholic Church and therefore not allowed to marry or have children or was this allowed.

Thoughts would be appreciated.

Lanarkshire / Mary Ann Anderson nee O'Connor (Govanhill)
« on: Monday 04 February 13 12:01 GMT (UK)  »
This really is a long shot and running on from a previous post which Monica solved for me.

My grandfather's brother James Anderson was murdered on the 8th May 1926 leaving his young son fatherless aged just a few months at Nelson St,Glasgow

His mother Mary Ann Anderson nee O'Connor according to records never remarried but had another son on 17th January 1941 with no father listed on the birth certificate.

Mary Ann Anderson passed on 26th August 1987 and a service was held at Our Lady of the Consolation, Inglefield St, Govanhill, Glasgow on the 30th August before service at Linn Crematorium.

On her death certificate it is this second son who is the informant, living at 132 Jamieson St, Govanhill.

On the family death notice it says just names her two sons.

Let's roll forward to 2013. First born son would be 87. Second son is more likely to still be alive.

Has anyone heard of this family or ways to trace the second son. I have checked with Our Lady of Consolation, records not held any more and no Anderson's known in congregation.

Linn Cremtorium say they have records of cremation but no address for informant but I think that would be Jamieson Street anyway.

I went to 132 Jamieson St, Govanhill and spoke to residents, not long lived in the communal close and no recollection of an Anderson family.

I can see no records of second born son's death at the Mitchell Library.

Does anyone remember Anderson's from Govanhill or this family.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Scott.

Hi guys,

hope some old timers can maybe help out, my great grandparents John and Lizzie Anderson moved to the area early 1903 from Limerick with four kids. John (Big Jack) ,Ethel,James (Jimmy) and Elizabeth (Lizzie) living in Dale Street.

In 1924 when my grandfathers brother James was 24 he married Mary Ann O'Connor, in January of 1926 their first and only child was born James Jnr, they lived in Nelson St.

A few months later at 11.30pm on the 8th May 1926 just a few months after the birth of his son James was murdered outside 128 Crookston St with a single stab wound to the neck and dying as a result of blood loss and shock a few moments later.

Now I am sure no one will remember this but would anyone know where to look to see if this was reported maybe in a newspaper or if anyone was ever convicted.

Cheers,

Scott

Limerick / James Anderson/Mary Digner
« on: Tuesday 29 January 13 00:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hi folks I hope someone can help.

my great grandfather John Anderson was born in 1870 in Limerick,Ireland he married Elizabeth Quaid from Adare,Limerick in 1894 in Limerick City.

His parents were James Anderson and Mary Digner.

If he was born 1870 I am guessing his parents married sometime before this, has anyone heard of the name Digner in Limerick, that was the name given by my grandfather on his mothers Scottish death certificate and he signed it so I doubt it was wrong as it was also on my great grandfathers death certificate again signed by my grandfather.

Any help would be appreciated.

Scott Anderson.
