Scotland / mysterious cousin...
« on: Tuesday 10 August 10 20:29 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me if it's likely that comeone listed as a "cousin" to the head of household on the 1871 isn't really a cousin at all?

I have my gtgt grandparents in Gateshead in 1871 living with their 2 eldest daughters, his sister and brother in law and an Ann Niel (cousin)

I have NO idea who this woman is ! assuming she is a first cousin then her mother's maiden name would have to be Rae or Laurie but I can find no reference to a marriage between either of those names and a man named Niel.

She is 22 y/o in 1871 born in Scotland but I can't find a birth for her (I knew that was unlikely anyway) or any census records before 1871 than are likely to be her at all, found one in Ayrshire but as both this Ann Niel's parents were also born in Ayrshire and all the rest of my family seeem to have been born in the Jedburgh area I'm not convinced it's her.

Can anyone shed light on this for me? :)

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 1871 census writing help
« on: Wednesday 04 August 10 21:12 BST (UK)  »
I've found my Gtgt Grandfather on the 1871 census in Gateshead living with his wife 2 eldest daughters, his sister, brother in law and a mysterious cousin ...

Can anyone help me decipher her name please? If I can find out who the heck she is I might just be able to go a bit further back with this line but so far I haven't been able to find her using the name I thought I was reading (I won't say what I thought it says as I don't want anyone else to be influenced by my bad deciphering lol)

Roxburghshire / tying up some loose ends, Rae family
« on: Friday 02 April 10 20:51 BST (UK)  »
At a complete standstill on my direct line so I thought I'd finally dust off some of my Gt Grandfather's siblings and see if I could find out what happened to them (and possibly make a breakthrough that way?)

Completely stuck on two of the sisters though so am hoping that some kind soul may be able to help?

Looking for Sarah Ann Rae born 1855 in Newcastle (presumably her parents were visiting someone at the time) and Margaret Rae born 1851 in Jedburgh.  Both daughters of William Rae and Margaret Laurie/Lawrie/Lowrie (spelling varies on differing certificates).

Any information at all would be most welcome ... marriage? death? children? they both appear to have just vanished into thin air!

can anyone help?

Thanks :)

Canada / Looking for william Rae
« on: Saturday 13 February 10 19:12 GMT (UK)  »
Trying to find any trace of William Rae born 1883 in Hawick Scotland, son of Robert Rae and Margaret Wright.

Found a post on ancestry library edidion (which annoyingly will not let me reply to) which says he died in Toronto in 1928, informant Margaret Rae wife.

William was my gt grandmother's younger brother and to date is one of only two siblings out of nine (sister Georgina also emigrated to Canada) who remain unaccounted for and I haven't managed to contact any descendants of or fill in any details of their adult life.

Can anyone help?

Roxburghshire / Looking for a sheep thief LOL
« on: Monday 29 June 09 20:31 BST (UK)  »
Looking for ANY information on a Thomas Rae who was convicted of stealing sheep in Jedburgh c1818.

My mother can remember as a child hearing a conversation between her grandmother and a friend where Grandmother stated "oh no! we don't have anything to do with "that" side of the family ....... someone on "that" side was hanged for sheep stealing"

I'm hoping I've found the man she was talking about but I can't seem to find out anything else about him to tie him in with my lot.

Any ideas?

Lanarkshire / Probable brothers?
« on: Tuesday 23 June 09 19:23 BST (UK)  »
I may be clutching at straws here.

I've been researching my Bogle line for 4 years (ish) and have been stuck for about 3 of those on my 5 x gt grandfather William Bogle bn c1755 in Biggar.

Yesterday I noticed a Bogle birth in Biggar that I had missed before a Jannet Bogle born 1785 to a James Bogle and Kathrine Bell...

Now bearing in mind that Biggar still is a fairly small town I KNOW they are related but do you think it is probable that James and William are brothers?  or would that be assuming too much?

I also found a birth of a James Bogle in Biggar in 1734 but am a bit hesitant about this being the same man as it would make him 51 y/o when his daughter was born ...... perhaps HIS father?

Also, to save anyone some leg work.... I already have the names of every single Bogle who lived in Biggar during the 1841 census and they are ALL children/grandchildren of my William so no insight there lol

Any second opinions? ideas?

Thanks :)

Warwickshire / Ward family
« on: Friday 06 February 09 19:51 GMT (UK)  »
Firstly .... apologies for my earlier post in which I mistakely typed the wrong year for my look up request .... I meant 1901 lol

So here goes again ...

My gt grandparents, James Alfred Ward and Emma Phillips,  marriage certificate (found with the help of lovely RC members) gives their address as 172 watery lane Birmingham (Grooms father named as William).  On googling the address I found an entry in the Commonwealth graves commision of an R Ward killed in 1916, son of Mrs E Ward resident at 172 Watery Lane Birmingham.

Going by the dates I am convinced that Mrs E Ward MUST be the mother of my James Alfred so .....

Would any kind sould mind looking up the address in 1901 in the hope that the Ward family are living there at that time?

I "think" I have found them in 1891 living at 7 Back 452 Garrison Lane with children:

Alfred aged 6 (James Alfred?)
Ellen aged 4
Emily aged3
Frederick aged 1

But as the 1901 census for Warwickshire isn't on freecen as yet I'm a bit stuck for finding the mysterious "R Ward"

Can anyone help?

Thanks :)

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / 1911 address lookup please?
« on: Friday 06 February 09 16:48 GMT (UK)  »
Can I extend a HUGE grovelling plea for someone to do a lookup for me on the 1911 census?

the address is 172 Watery Lane Birmingham.

I'm hoping that there are going to be a family a Wards living there who absolutely have to be linked to my tree...

My gt grandparents marriage certificate (James Ward and Emma Phillips) in 1925 gives this as their address and when I googled it there was a record in the commonwealth graves commsion of an R. Ward killed 1916 ...... son of Mrs E Ward at the same address !

I would really really appreciate it if anyone could do this for me.

Thanks

:)
