Cambridgeshire / Ely Holy Trinity Marriages Location
« on: Thursday 06 July 23 15:27 BST (UK)  »
Getting a chance to visit Ely this weekend where a large portion of my family lived from at least the early 18th century. Just checking that all the marriages that say took place in Holy Trinity would have actually taken place in the Lady chapel? Surely not in the main cathedral building. Interested in seeing the building my ancestors would have known.

Armed Forces / Life in an Indian Cantonment - What was it like?
« on: Saturday 16 July 22 11:57 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone provide any suggestions for reading or actual info about a soldier's daily life in a British army Indian Cantonment. An ancestor of mine served for seven years as a 2nd Dragoon Guard in the Punjab in the late 19th century and while his service record is fascinating I find I'm desperate to discover what he did for seven years (beyond periods spent in hospital with STDs!) moving around from place to place. I presume, being a cavalry man, that they had horses to look after. Did these soldiers go out on patrol on horseback? Any help, no matter how anecdotal, would be valuable.

Armed Forces / Researching Napoleonic Soldiers
« on: Saturday 19 June 21 11:32 BST (UK)  »
Just a speculative/general thread really on looking at and researching relatives who served in the late Georgian period. I myself have a direct relative who signed up, 31st Regt of Foot, in 1799 and was discharged in 1821. I've done quite a lot of research on him already but I'm always interested in what other people may have done or accomplished. I've just got excited at looking at his life again and when I look at the folder I have of his time in the army I always want more. My interest mainly lies in everyday life but I am interested in all aspects of a soldiers life and experiences. It was spotting this book in the monthly Pen & Sword sale that did it for me.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Oddly Specific Job Description?
« on: Saturday 03 April 21 13:16 BST (UK)  »
I get that the second part reads Iron Stamper but does the first really read '2 1/8'? Anyone know what a 2 1/8 Iron Stamper is? His brother was one as well. This is in Wolverhampton 1891 census.

Staffordshire / James Mullaney - Wednesbury or Stockport?
« on: Friday 02 April 21 10:58 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone check the parish records for Wednesbury and see if a James Mullaney, b1865, to John and Ann Mullaney was registered? In the 1871 census he's born Stockport but in 1881 he's born Wednesbury. The info is contradictory but falls more heavily on Wednesbury to my mind. Thank you.

The Common Room / Black Country Industry and Social History
« on: Wednesday 31 March 21 15:13 BST (UK)  »
What the thread title says really. Started to investigate the lives of my Irish immigrant ancestors who moved to the Black Country mid 19th century. I'm looking for recommendations please for good books and resources to understand their lives in this area; Wednesbury, Bilston, Wolverhampton.
Once lockdown is lifted I plan on visiting the Black Country Museum. I really can't wait for that.

Roscommon / John Mullaney b c1831/32
« on: Saturday 20 March 21 15:49 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help me definitively locate the birth of John Mullaney born in Roscommon in around 1831/32? Father is also John Mullaney. Moves to England sometime before 1852 where he marries another Irish immigrant Ann Duffy in Stockport, his Father is deceased by this point.

Staffordshire / John Mullaney Drowned in Bilston Rd Canal Wolverhampton
« on: Saturday 20 March 21 13:21 GMT (UK)  »
Just discovered that my great, great Grandfather managed to drown himself when, apparently, inebriated in the canal near Bilston street bridge in 1891. Have one newspaper report but never having had anything like this before wonder if there's likely to be anymore info out there; coroners report, inquest etc? Apparently he was going to the Bridge Inn Bilston rd, is there a picture of the pub? All of my research is outside Staffordshire normally.

London and Middlesex / Pancras Place?
« on: Friday 21 December 18 09:36 GMT (UK)  »
I have an address entry in one of my baptism parish records as 'Pancras Place' but for the life of me I can't locate it. It's from the early 1840's. Does anyone here know where 'Pancras Place' was located?
