Census and Resource Discussion / Records missing from Find my past?
« on: Saturday 12 November 22 11:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I've been searching Find My Past, and I've discovered that numbers of census records for some of my family members are simply not showing up on there (I've found them on Ancestry).  Is this a known problem?  Or am I simply going mad?

Thanks

Graveyards and Gravestones / Query about non-conformist burial registration
« on: Thursday 30 January 20 15:59 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I'm not sure if this is the right board to post this on but here goes.  I've found a record that indicates a child was buried in the Victoria Park Cemetery, Hackney in 1872.  The address given is Hard Street, Walworth.  This seems to be the correct registration for a child in my family tree who was born in 1871, is living in Hard Street Walworth with her family in the 1871 census, and died at about a year old.  However, I've found no other records for anyone in that family to indicate they were non-conformists.

I haven't found a christening record for the child in question, but those siblings I've found records for seem to have been registered in the Church of England, as were her parents.  Her parents marriage was registered as Church of England.

Has anyone come across any instances like this where a single burial record relates to non-conformism, or is it (as I suspect) just one of those really weird co-incidences that come up sometimes?

Thanks

Armed Forces / Service Pensions awarded after WW1
« on: Friday 25 October 19 12:51 BST (UK)  »
I have an ancestor who served in the Labour Corp in WW1, but didn't receive a pension.  Family story is that this is because he was hospitalised with pneumonia and discharged himself against medical advice as his wife & child were in danger of being evicted and he wanted to go to them & sort things out.  He died of TB in 1922, and his death certificate gives the date the TB was "certified" (I assume diagnosed), which was during the time he was enlisted.  I'm wondering if this may be the real reason he was denied a pension.  Does anyone know if there's any general information available as to why pensions might be denied?

Many thanks

Does anyone know (or know where I could find out) why Dumpling Hall - an area of Newcastle upon Tyne - is so called?

World War One / John Mill & A E Swait (?) & Thomas Grove
« on: Monday 20 November 17 12:00 GMT (UK)  »
I have a photograph of my Gt Grandfather Thomas Grove taken approx 1916 when he was in the Labour Corp.  He's with 2 fiends (friends even!), & on the back they're named as John Mill of Anfield St, Dundee & A E Swait (?sp?) of Russell Road, London.  I'm interested in contacting people who might know about the war service they did, as I've been unable to find my Gt Grandfather's service record and hoped others may be able to share some information.  There's a family story that he was at Salisbury Plain for a while, possibly with the RAF, but more than that I don't know.

The Common Room / Travelling companions
« on: Saturday 08 July 17 12:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I'm tracing a woman who was a maid, and travelled abroad with her employers.  I've found her on a passenger list but of course these are alphabetical, not organised by party.  Doe anyone know if there's any where of finding out who she was travelling with?

Many thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Area of New York
« on: Saturday 08 July 17 12:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I'm looking at a "List or manifest of alien passengers for the United States", date June 1912.  The word is listed under "city or town", & the state is New York.  Does anyone have any ideas?

Many thanks

The Common Room / Baptising children from "mixed" marriages
« on: Monday 26 June 17 15:57 BST (UK)  »
I have an ancestor who was in British Army in the 1840's/50's.  I believe I am correct in thinking that therefore he couldn't have been Catholic.  He married a woman in County Mayo in the late 1840's.  I'm assuming that she was Catholic, but that a "mixed" marriage such as this wouldn't have been able to take place in a Catholic Church.  Would they have been able to have their children baptised in a Catholic Church?

Many thanks

Armed Forces / Seeking information about bigamous army marriages
« on: Saturday 25 March 17 12:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

William was serving as a colour Sergent with a Staffordshire regiment.  In 1874 he married Mary, the woman I have on record as his wife, and they had their first child (they went on to have at least6 more).  However, a note on his service record indicates that his wife's name was Sarah.  I've subsequently found a possible marriage between him & Sarah in 1875.

The first marriage was listed in the Civil index, the second  in the Army index & crucially it is crossed through & has the note "invalided May 1877" attached.  The service record I have for him would appear to be incomplete - there is nothing on there about any disciplinary actions, or about an invalided marriage. Does anyone have any ideas as to where I could find out any more about this?

Many thanks
