For some reason, the middle column on my Facebook page no longer displays messages in full, and does not wrap the text. It looks as though the two outer columns have moved inwards, taking up the space that the middle column used to use.

Any ideas how to fix this?

Thanks in advance

Was that a certain member of this forum on the radio this morning?

This is not my family, fortunately, but it is my home town.

No prizes for poetic excellence.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / How old do you think she is?
« on: Saturday 13 May 17 18:54 BST (UK)  »
This is my grandmother, Win Walmsley, born 1911. She went on to become a Tiller girl, but how old do you think she is in this photo?

(No restores needed, thank you.)

The Common Room / British Newspaper Archives - trying to cancel autorenew
« on: Sunday 08 January 17 19:47 GMT (UK)  »
I can't find a way of cancelling the autorenew on BNA. The guidance on the page directs you to the "My Accounts" page, at the bottom of which is a tick box for Auto Renew. However, when I untick this box and save changes, all I get are red error messages about my email address and password.  I've tried contacting them but they have not replied.

Does anyone know a way around this?

Technical Help / FindMyPast - why can I no longer see parish registers for Bala?
« on: Tuesday 09 February 16 18:40 GMT (UK)  »
Some time ago, I had help with the following query:

As a result of that help, I was able to view a copy of the marriage register for Edward Jones and Jane Hughes, in August 1867 at Llanfor, near Bala.  Since then, they have changed FindMyPast and I have no idea how to find that record again.  Anyone able to help, please?

Many thanks

The Common Room / Living people on 1939 register
« on: Sunday 03 January 16 14:35 GMT (UK)  »
With help, I found my grandparents in 1939, and was pleasantly surprised to see my dad's name there too, despite the fact that he was born in 1936 and is very much alive today. His younger brother, however, was redacted.

Has anyone else found living relatives?

The Common Room / 1939 - missing grandparents
« on: Tuesday 29 December 15 10:46 GMT (UK)  »
I'm completely failing to find my grandparents on the 1939 register and would welcome any tips.

John Edward Jones (Normally Edward or Ted), born 1907
Winifred May Jones (Win), born 1911 but died 1943.

They lived in Holmes Chapel, Cheshire, where Ted was a gardener.

As Win died whilst the war was still going on, could she perhaps have been removed from the register?

Any pointers gratefully welcomed!

The Common Room / Finding graves (general query)
« on: Tuesday 18 August 15 12:37 BST (UK)  »
Our village, which has a churchyard and a cemetery, has been approached by a company who will map the graves, transcribe records  and host the information on the web, to enable family historians to find the records. They, naturally, want to charge us quite a lot for this service.

I haven't searched for graves, so don't know too much about it. I have doubts about how and where this company would store the data, and whether anyone would actually come across it in a normal internet search. I also wonder whether this data is already available online for those who know where to look.  I'm aware of sites like Findagrave, and wonder whether it would just be better to make sure the data is on that site.

Can any more experienced grave-searchers advise please? Where and how would you start searching for a grave?
