Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Date for this wedding please
« on: Monday 01 January 24 09:18 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone suggest a time period for this photo please? I don't know who any of the people are, and a date might help.
Thanks in advance

Berkshire / Bill Rogers' caravan park, Dedworth
« on: Tuesday 20 December 22 15:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
If anyone has any information or, even better, photos of Bill Rogers' caravan park, Dedworth, near Windsor, I'd be very interested. The site was at Castle Farm, near Dedworth in the late 1950s and early 1960s. I'm pretty sure there is a Tesco's supermarket on the site now!
Anything else about Dedworth from that era would also be interesting, such as the Wolf pub.

I know it's a long shot, but thanks for reading.

The Common Room / Historical use of damsons as a dye source
« on: Tuesday 06 December 22 07:22 GMT (UK)  »
Has anyone in their family history research come across the use of damsons as a source of dye pigment?
I'm doing some research on damson orchards and although there are lots of cases where people say things like "They used to send a lot of damsons down from Westmorland to Lancashire for dying cotton", there seems to be a complete lack of actual historical data on the subject.
So - I just wondered whether anyone had any relevant knowledge, or family stories on the subject.

Thanks
Mike

Any ideas on what this job is? Back-something.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Spray coal?
« on: Wednesday 17 February 21 14:40 GMT (UK)  »
Does this look like "spray coal" to you? (3rd line from the bottom). I can't think what else it might be. I don't have any more of the document to compare it with.

The Stay Safe Board / Mixed messages
« on: Monday 19 October 20 17:34 BST (UK)  »
I know we're getting some very mixed messages at the moment but  I was amused to hear the spokesman for the Welsh assembly just now announcing that they were going to "implement a firebreak to turn back the tide".

Occupation Interests / Shoemaking in Shropshire
« on: Sunday 26 July 20 22:45 BST (UK)  »
I have an ancestor who was a shoemaker in Treflach, a small village near Oswestry, in 1851.

I'm guessing it was a cottage industry at the time but if anyone can point me to resources about 19th Century shoemaking, particularly in Shropshire, I'd be grateful.

Thank you

Unless my memory is much mistaken, there used to be a convention on this board that restorations were only carried out if requested by the original poster. I've noticed that this seems to have changed, and all photographs submitted for dating get worked on by some restorers, perhaps some of the more recent members of the community.

You might all disagree with me, but I think it is more polite to ask whether a restoration is required before jumping in and doing one.

The Stay Safe Board / National Theatre streaming plays during lockdown
« on: Friday 03 April 20 08:48 BST (UK)  »
If anyone who is missing going out to the theatre and hasn't caught up with this yet, the National Theatre is streaming live recordings of plays.

Laat night was the fabulous comedy - "One man, two guvnors". We haven't laughed so much since I can't remember when, so much that it hurt.  It is still available for seven days.

Future offerings include Jane Eyre and Twelfth Night.
