Argyllshire / Quick Question
« on: Sunday 13 August 23 18:30 BST (UK)  »
 Afternoon,

A baptismal record for an ancestor of mine reads -

'Donald McFarlane & Anabella McLean late in Baligown had their daughter Catherine baptised D.I.P'.

Can anyone tell me what both 'late in' and 'D.I.P' refers to?

Many thanks,

Keelan

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / DNA Bombshell
« on: Tuesday 27 June 23 23:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone,

Looking for opinions and advice on this one.

I ordered my brother-in-law an Ancestry DNA test as his mother was adopted and we were curious to find out anything about her family. The results came back recently and it has confirmed what we thought we knew about his biological maternal grandmother who was a lady from Co. Wicklow, who moved to England with her sister in their late teens, and she gave birth a few years later in October 1961.

DNA matches have come back on the maternal biological grandfathers line indicating that this man was from America. I think I have narrowed it down to one man, who I have been told was in the military, so perhaps there was some conflict or reason he would have been stationed over in England in 1960/1961? This line of the family seems to have multiple DNA connections, well over 40 that I can pinpoint.

Now, the bombshell in this is that the DNA results revealed that my brother in law's father, is not his biological father which was not expected. His father, auntie, half sister, paternal cousins have previously tested and are not showing as DNA matches on ancestry. So this has thrown up a lot of questions.

Can it be possible that there can be any mistake in these DNA results? I have read this question from many other researchers, but now I find myself asking it too.

I know it may be difficult to research the paternal line as not many close DNA matches have come up, and being mainly Welsh with the common surnames that seem to be appearing it makes it extra difficult. Can anyone advise on how to approach this, what services or professionals may be able to help?

I look forward to hearing from anyone willing to help.

Many thanks,
Keelan

Argyllshire / McMillan's of Killean Parish
« on: Sunday 20 February 22 14:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hi folks,

Looking for help finding out if Archibald McMillan is the same man, or two different men.

Mary McMillan, Single, 77yo, died 19th Dec 1856 at Tayinloan in Killean. Daughter of Hugh McMillan (Ag. Lab) & Betsey McMillan. Registered by Archibald McMillan, brother, Beachmenach, not present.

My 5xGG was Hugh McMillan, married Mary McMillan 3rd Apr 1799 at Killean Parish. Hugh a resident of Culfuar & Mary of Ruada. They had a son called Archibald in April 1801, died 28th Aug 1858 at Beachmunach. So I am wondering if Hugh is either a brother for Mary who died in 1856 or a father to Mary who died in 1856.

So I am wondering if Archibald (brother of Mary) & Archibald (Son of Hugh & Mary) are uncle and nephew or if they are the same man, meaning that Hugh McMillan married twice, first to Betsey & then to Mary. I can't find another Archibald McMillan in the census living in Beachme/unach apart from the man who died in 1858.

Any suggestions would be welcome!

Thanks, Keelan.

NB - Hugh McMillan & Betsey (Elizabeth McMillan) had several children, their youngest being Florence McMillan 1796 (married McLachlan) who died in 1877, and I share a DNA match with a descendant of hers.

Lanarkshire / John McCormick, Milton 1886
« on: Saturday 21 August 21 16:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi folks,

I recently found the death record for my 4x great uncle, John McCormick. These are the details on the record -

John McCormick, Brickfield Labourer, Widower of Rose Boyle. 18th March 1886, 62 years, at 202 Possil Road, Milton. U/r 9 Little Street, Glasgow. Parents - Duncan McCormick, Bottle Work Labourer (deceased) & Alice Dillon (deceased). Cause - Probably Heart Disease. Informant - Daniel McCormick, Brother, Occupier (present).

There is then a revised record made at a later date which reads -

John McCormack, 72 years, male. On the 18th March 1886. In the house at 202 Possil Road, Glasgow. Occupied by Daniel McCormack, Junior Brickmaker residing there. Usual residence, 9 Little Street, Calton, Glasgow. Cause - Natural causes, very probably exhaustion and old age.

John was born 11th December 1813, Greenock, Renfrewshire.

I can't find John & Rose in a census record together. Nor can I seem to find a death for Rose McCormick nee Boyle, nor a marriage record for John & Rose. Would anyone be able to help me find this couple in some sort of record?

Many thanks,
Keelan

Lanarkshire / RC Baptismal Sponsors
« on: Saturday 07 August 21 18:56 BST (UK)  »
Hi folks,

Hoping for some help with a quick query.

Cecily Boyle was Baptised (RC) on 1st June 1828 at Glasgow St Andrew to John Boyle & Mary McCartney, and sponsors were James Smith & Mary Boyle.

I am curious who were usually the sponsors of someones child in the RC church? I am just wondering who this Mary Boyle could have been, because I assume the mother was not listed as a sponsor of her own child.

They also Baptise another child, James, on 21st January 1826, sponsors were Peter & Cecily Duncan/Durnan (or something similar), so I am also assuming that this sponsor Cecily, is whom John & Mary named their own daughter 2 years later, after.

Thanks,
Keelan

Argyllshire / Brick Wall nealry solved? Help please!
« on: Sunday 06 June 21 22:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone,

I have a brick wall in my family tree that I had all but accepted and moved on from. I believe I have previously posted on it, but cannot find the threads.

It is regarding my 4x GG's Peter Thomson, herring fisherman, & Flora Hamilton.

This is the info I had.

Peter Thomson married Flora Hemmal 7th July 1827, Saddell & Skipness.
3 children - Duncan Thomson dies 1862 at Breckval, Kilberry. Margaret (marries a McCook) dies in 1899. Catherine, mentioned on the death record for Flora in 1867.

Peter Thomson I find on NO census records. Only firm census I can find for Flora is in 1861 - Flora Thompson, 70, Parliament Square Campbeltown, Late Fishermans Wife.

I could find no birth records for the children, Duncan, Catherine, & Margaret.

Story ended there - couldn't seem to go any further.

***************************************************************

Tonight I find a marriage between a Peter MacTavish in Aragaig, in the Parish of Claonaig & Flora Hamiltown in Lochkiaran, in Kilcalmonell & Kilberry, on 7th July 1827.

I then find births -
Margaret MacTavish, 15th Sept 1828 at Lochkiaran. (Says born in Fornication)
Catharine MacTavish, 28th Dec 1830 at Lochkiaran.
Duncan MacTavish, 7th Apr 1834 " "
Duncan MacTavish, 9th Dec 1835 " "

Peter is listed as being a Cottar at Lochkiaran.

I then notice the 1841 census I had previously saved for Archibald Hamilton, father to Flora. His residence is Lochkieranbeg in Kilacalmonell. Amongst the people living with him are Nancy Thomson, 8 & Duncan Thomson, 5.

***********************************************************

Margaret Thomson (daughter of Peter & Flora) marriage Hugh McCook. I had believed Hugh fathered an illegitimate son called William McCook/McTavish with another lady called Margaret McTavish, but now I am wondering whether William was born out of wedlock to Hugh & Margaret or whether Margaret had William by another man.

My question is that the marriage in Saddell & Skipness has Peter's surname as Thomson. But the one in Kilcalmonell has him as MacTavish. The children are born MacTavish, but from then on out are mainly Thomson. Why might this be? Any suggestions are welcome. It migt help solve a family riddle i'd not been able to solve for years.

Also - am i putting 2 and 2 together and getting 100?

Thanks in advance,

Keelan
