I would appreciate it, if this photo could be dated please. I believe the photo could be of my great aunt born 1893 in Victoria, Australia. Other family members think it is of my great grandmother born 1858 Victoria, Australia.

Kent / Captain John Basden of Baker's Cross, Cranbrook
« on: Sunday 13 March 22 07:33 GMT (UK)  »
My 9xgreat grandfather John Basden was referred to as Captain John Basden, clothyer on his son's baptism record in 1658 at Cranbrook. I hope someone is able to help me with why he was referred to as a captain and of what. Another descendant believes he may have been a captain in Cromwell's army.

Thank you

Armed Forces / Royal Navy Record Question
« on: Sunday 30 December 18 03:56 GMT (UK)  »
My grandfather's cousin joined the RN in the early 1890s. I have a copy of his service record - the last entry has that he served on HMS Goliath from 29th March 1900 to 24th February 1901. In the Character Column it has VG and in the last column - If Discharged, Whither and for what Cause it has 'Run'. Does that mean he jumped ship/deserted? If not what could it mean? I would be grateful for any help.

Thanks,

Leigh P

Armed Forces / HMS Himalaya China Station 1872
« on: Wednesday 11 July 18 12:11 BST (UK)  »
I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. My great grandfather Able Seaman Henry Rayner was on the H M S Himalaya from 1st June 1862 to 30th September 1873. He was awarded the Assanti (Assantee) Clasp for service in west Africa during 1873. His son wrote in 1964 that his father had been in Japan in 1872 but have found no evidence of this. Before being on H M S Himalaya, Henry was on the H M S Simeone for three weeks and before that he was on what looks like H M S Dogrell with Captain A M? Curtis from 28th October 1871 to 6th May 1872.

I would like to know if possible if any of these ships would have been in Asia at these times. I would appreciate any information or suggestions.

Regards,

Leigh

FH Documents and Artefacts / Information about Brooch Please
« on: Monday 21 April 14 07:44 BST (UK)  »
Good afternoon,

I was given a brooch by my husband's aunt, which she said had belonged to her great grandmother who was born in London c1836 and came to Australia in the early 1850s.

The brooch is approximately 2cm wide and 1.5cm high - see attached photos. The clasp is a typical hand made C catch and the hinge is a tube hinge.

I would be pleased if anyone has any information on this type of brooch.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Date of Photos Please

I would appreciate it if the two attached photos could be dated. The first one - the man at the back was my great grandfather 1856-1940 and the other photo I thought the woman was my great grandmother 1858-1944 but am not sure now. Do you think the two white haired ladies are the same?

Thank you

Hello,

I am hoping someone is able to look up a marriage for William Baseden and Mary? c1790 most likely in one of villages near the Kent border. William was from Wittersham, Kent.

Thank you,
