I'm hoping to figure out whether these photos are 1870s or 1880s and not copies of older photos as some family members believe.
The woman's photo is by S Solomon of Rundle Street, Adelaide. His studio was active from 1874-1891. Would I be correct in assuming the pointed corners are more 1870s-early 80s? Is there anything about her dress that pinpoints one decade over the other. And the hair is throwing me, is she unmarried or just proud of her hair?

The man's photo doesn't have any photographer branding on it but the corners are pointed. Is there anything about his dress/face hair that pinpoints a decade?

I don't have the originals so these are the only photos of I have of the images.

Many thanks!

Hi all,

Trying to figure out the date of this CDV, not so much to identify the person but rather the flourish as I'm currently researching the photographer and trying to figure out when this flourish was used on the back of his CDVs.

Photographer operated in Western Australia from around 1865-1890, but from 1868-69 he was in a partnership known as Manning & Knight.
I don't think this photo was taken any later than the end of the 1870's, but I'd love to be able to figure out if it's before or after he entered the business partnership.

Many thanks!

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Completed: Old German Marriage Certificate 1828
« on: Saturday 17 December 16 05:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

Is anyone here skilled in reading Old German script?

The transcription shows it's for the marriage of Ernst August Vorwerk, (son of Christian Vorwerk) and Johanne Louise Domke (dau of Gottlob Domke) on 13 Apr 1828 in Möstchen, Züllichau-Schwiebus, Brandenburg, Germany (now Mostki, Poland); but there seems to be a lot more information on the entry.
I've looked around on the internet and found what each column is supposed to be for, which sort of line up for some of the columns I've been able to make out.
1. Groom's name & his parents names, including where they lived
2. Occupation and residence of Groom
3. Groom's Age and birth date
4. Whether parental permission was obtained, or not needed
5. Groom's marital status (bachelor or widower)
6. Bride's name
7. Bride's parents and their address
8. Bride's Age & date of birth
9. Whether bride had parental permission
10. Marital Status - unmarried or widower (if so, shows previous marriage info)
11. Dates their intentions to marry were announced
12. Pastor & Marriage Date

I looked around on the net at the Old German handwriting sites and with that I was able to make out Ernst August Vorwerk, Louisa and Christian (but in the brides father column?) but yeah, it's a bit tricky for me!

If anyone is able to decipher it I'd be most grateful.

Cheers
Shelley

Hi,

Have come across some old family photos and looking to date them. All photos taken in Melbourne, studio names unknown, will hopefully have someone taking a closer look at them later in the year and have asked them to scan the studio details.

They appear to be 1870-80's, but would be great if someone were able to narrow it down for me.

Many thanks!

Hi,

I'm trying to date this wedding photo CDV.
I can't see what's under the veil which might have made it a bit more obvious, but maybe someone can tell by the bows running down the front and the wider ruffles on the bottom of the sleeves.

There was a female photographer called Manning in Fremantle in the late 1860's -early 70's but she operated under the name 'Yeldham Gallery'. A relation of hers had a very profitable photography business in nearby Perth but I've never seen that particular logo on his CDV's. His business went for most of the second half of the 1800's.

I keep thinking late 1870's, but maybe someone with a bit more knowledge can confirm for me.
Thanks! :)

Roscommon / Bernard O'Connor - Roscommon b. approx 1810
« on: Wednesday 14 November 12 03:58 GMT (UK)  »
hi all,

I'm looking for information on a Bernard O'Connor who married a Mary McDermott sometime around 1825-1835.
They had a son, Martin Loftus O'Connor, born approx 1836 in Roscommon who immigrated to Australia.

I have further information on Martin but cannot find anything about his parents or siblings. I've seen a few Bernard's mentioned but nothing concrete linking to the McDermott's or his son Martin.

Even maybe an O'Connor/Loftus or McDermott/Loftus marriage may be of help.

If anyone is able to help I'd be most appreciative!

Thanks!

Kent Lookup Requests / Deal, Kent County Assizes, Court Records - RILEY
« on: Friday 26 October 12 13:42 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm looking to find the court records for a trial that occurred on 23 July 1849 in the Kent County Assizes.

James Haxton Riley, known as James Riley (alias Reilly) was sentenced to death for an 'unnatural offence', which in the English Criminal Register is mentioned as 'bestiality' (ooer!) On the same day a John & Henry Campbell were sentenced in the trial prior for the same offence, however Kent newspapers mention that the Campbells offence occurred at Bexley and Riley's offence was at Sholden, near Deal. All were reprieved of the death penalty and sentenced to 7 years transport to Australia.

I'm looking for any documents that can shed more detail on the trial of James Riley.

Any information would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Devon / Plymouth - Tonkin Toy Maker 1838
« on: Wednesday 24 October 12 03:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Am trying to find out some more details of a Mr Tonkin - Toy Maker on Old Town Street, Plymouth.
Only reference I can find is the below article from the Exeter Flying Post 30 Aug 1838.

Cannot see anything in the 1841 census on Old Town Street for a Tonkin. Can't even find a reference to any toy makers on the street at the time. I don't think he succeeded in his endeavour as there doesn't seem to be a male Tonkin death that year other than an 85 yr old Joseph Tonkin and I can't see where he lived or what he did.

I'm trying to connect this guy to a Tonkin family that lived in the street in the 1820's but by 1830 had moved to London. Their last evidence showing them in the street was in 1823 when John & Betty Tonkin baptised their son Henry.

Hope someone has some better detective skills than me!

Thanks!

I'm trying to figure out the studio location of the attached photograph, based on the background used. I don't have the original photograph and cannot remember who sent it to me nearly a decade ago.

My guess on the date is 1860-1870 and the photo has come down through a family who has lived in Fremantle, Australia since 1830, they left behind family back in London, around the Hackney, Shoreditch, and Surrey areas.

My theory is the photo is from the family in the UK who have sent it as a keepsake to those in Western Australia and perhaps the paper the woman holds in her hand is a letter she's received from them.

I've Google image searched a range of search phrases like 'carte de visite, studio portrait, swan river colony photographers, fremantle, perth, guildford, hackney' etc with a variety of 1860s dates, but can't see any other photos with the same background.

Hoping someone on here has a bit more knowledge in the studios than me or has seen a diff photo with the same background...worth a try!

Thanks!
