London and Middlesex / Looking for the baptism of Daniel Lynch
« on: Tuesday 19 March 24 21:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Im helping a friend out with her family tree. In her tree her ancestor is Daniel Lynch who married Mary Blair on 25 May 1848 in Monk-Wearmouth, Durham, England. Ive got Daniel in the 1851,61 and 81 census in Durham.

In the 1851 census he says he was born in West Minster; St Giles in 1826 and he is a Cordwainer
IN the 1861 census London, Middlesex, England he is a dairyman
In the 81 census London, London, Middlesex, England and he is a boltmaker.

Can anyone find his birth in London? or where he was in the 1841 census?

Birth about 1826
Death 23 DEC 1890 • 22 Nile Street, Sunderland, Durham, England

Australia / Looking for Edith Elizabeth Taylor nee Craven shipping record to Australia
« on: Thursday 09 November 23 20:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Edith Taylor emigrated to Australia after the birth of her daughter Dorothy Alice Taylor. Dorothy was born 16 Dec 1912 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England. Edith 'husband' was John Henry Taylor - a soldier but I have found no marriage or other children. I have my doubts there was a marriage.

I have Dorothys birth certificate, two marriages and death.

Edith and Dorothy travelled to Australia between early 1913 and 1924. Edith is in the electoral roles in 1924 working as a dressmaker in Malvern, Victoria. The last record I can find for Edith is the 1837 electoral role in Malvern. There is an Edith in South Yarra in 1949 listed undertaking home duties but I cant confirm its the same person.

Im hoping someone can find the shipping record for them which will give me Ediths age. Im also looking for her death record.

Thank you in advance

Scotland / Looking for my ancestor Margaret Drysdale
« on: Monday 04 September 23 23:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi!

Im looking for any baptism, marriage and death information for Margaret Drysdale.

Margaret married Roger Martin and they had multiple children between 1787 and 1799

John  - baptised Clackmannan, Clackmannanshire, Scotland
James  - baptised Torryburn, Fife, Scotland
Roger  - baptised Torryburn, Fife, Scotland
Jean  - baptised Torryburn, Fife, Scotland
Margaret  - baptised Torryburn, Fife, Scotland
John  - baptised Clackmannan, Clackmannanshire, Scotland
Christian - baptised Clackmannan, Clackmannanshire, Scotland

It looks like Margaret was married to Roger Martin before he left for the USA to fight and she had a child with John Muir while working for him in 1782. Margarets marriage to Roger then would have been around 1780/1781.

I have another thread exploring my ancestor John Muir https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=876080.msg7479719#msg7479719:

Compeared upon Citation Margaret Drysdale Spouse to Roger Martine a Soldier who has been Several years in America and Acknowledged that John Muir Cowfeeder in the Parish of West Kirk in whose Service She had been before Martinmas eighty one was the only true father of the Child She brought forth Last year  She declared that the Said John Muir Died in January Seventeen hundred & eighty two And Produced an Extract from the Records of Mortality from the Parish of West Kirk Certifying the above Fact  She also Produced a Paper Dated Portsburgh 28th Febr. 1783 Signed James Somerville Bearing that the Said John Muir at the time of His Death was by Habit & Repute a Married Man

See Torryburn kirk session, Minutes (1777-1848), CH2/355/7  (ScotlandsPeople Virtual Volumes)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Fife / Saltpan owners in Torryburn in the 1780s
« on: Wednesday 30 August 23 04:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi

My ancestor Agnes/Ann/Annie Muir was born in 1782 in Torryburn, Fifeshire, Scotland to Margaret Drysdale and John Muir. The baptism says she was begotten in adultery. Her death certificate on 20 DEC 1872 in Alva, Clackmannanshire, Scotland also says she was illigitimate.

John Muir is named as the owner of a saltpan but apart from this we know nothing about him. Looking at Scotlandspeople and filtering by Fife theres a few John Muirs who are fathers 20 years before and 20 years after Agnes is born. Im assuming as a 'saltpan owner' he would have been older than 20 years.

Of course John Muir may not have been a saltpan owner but a worker...

There are no other baptisms in Torryburn for a longtime.

Any idea how to find saltpan owners from 1782 so I can try and find if my John Muir married and had more kids?

Clare / McMahon of Kildysart
« on: Friday 24 March 23 10:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

My ancestor Michael McMahon was born in Kildysart around 1813 to John McMahon and Ellen. They were Catholics. No one researching him have been able to find what happened to his parents and on ancestry people have copied any record possible as link to him so there not a lot of reliable info. I found the attached article but theres probably a lot of John McMahons and the one writing to the paper may be much younger. Any help would be appreciated.

He married Bridget O'Loughlin (also known as Biddy and Maria) on 18 Jun 1838 • Kildysart, County Clare, Ireland.

When he emigrated to Australia in 1855 with his young family he names his parents as John McMahon and Ellen and they were alive at that time. Bridget names her parents as Thomas O'Loughlin and Mary and they were also alive. Michael and Ellen could read and write.

Im hoping they were still alive to be included in the civil records.

DNA links us to multiple McMahon families. Speculatively some may be sibling to Michael McM.

Patrick McMahon (B1807) who married Mary Reirdy. Patrick moved to the USA. His children born in Kildysart.
Bryan McMahon who married Mary Doyle. Bryan lived in Kilmurry, Co Clare. Its about 38km from Kildysart.
James McMahon (B 1806) who married Bridget Moran. James born in Black Hills, Kildysart. First born son was named Bernard Bryan McMahon.
Ellen McMahon who married John Curtis. They moved to the USA.

Europe / Emigration record for Baldwin Fraenkel from Prussia
« on: Friday 17 February 23 03:23 GMT (UK)  »
Hi folks

Just looking for some fresh eyes. My Ancestor was born in Schildberg, Posen, Prussia around 1833

Baldwin Fraenkel emigrated to Van Diemans Land (Tasmania, Australia) around 1859. The first newspaper stories we have of him are there. He then moved to New Zealand. In Van Diemans Land he used the name Baldwin Franklin and kept that name the rest of his life.

We cannot find his emigration record from Prussia to anywhere let along Van Diemans Land. He was Jewish.

Im hoping someone else might be able to find it!

The Common Room / Help deciphering a name
« on: Sunday 23 October 22 14:10 BST (UK)  »
Hi!

Im helping my cousin find his fathers family. My cousin has DNA tested on ancestry and has good 400cM matches to the descendants of Francis (Frank) Rivier.

Its an odd surname in New Zealand name and I think its a made up one. His life from 1914 onwards is fairly well documented but I cant find a trace of him in England. IN his WWI war record in New Zealand he names a Eugene Cobri/Covri as an uncle who lived in England

Attached is the reference. Can anyone read the surname as I cant find anyone named with the variants I have typed above?

Thanks in advance!

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Date taken
« on: Monday 22 August 22 12:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi

This photo was in an album of photos belonging to my cousin Thomas Lewis Singleton, 1847-1922. It has no copyright restrictions.

To me it looks like American civil war photography which would make it a mutual cousin or is it fancy dress from a more recent period?
