Laois (Queens) / Dunnes and Whelans

Hello I am looking for some help to solve a family tree puzzle. I have a Civil Birth record for Bartholemew Whelan born in 1879 to Patrick Whelan of Kilmurry and Mary Dunne in Maryborough parish (now Portlaoise). According to my late Grandfather Daniel Luttrell, born Courtwood in 1877 he was a second cousin of this Bartle Whelan. BUT HOW ? Obviously second cousins have Grandparents as siblings so one of Patrick Whelans or Mary Dunne (of Loughteeog I believe) parents had to be a sibling of one of Daniels grandparents. Daniels grandparents were John Luttrell of Courtwood and Bridge Cassidy of Fisherstown on his fathers side and Daniel O'Mara of Inchacooly and Anne Conlon of Ballykelly on the Mothers side. So can anyone help me find who the parents of Patrick Whelan and  Mary Dunne were?. I strongly suspect that the answer will be the mother of Mary Dunne. I have been in contact with descendants of Dunnes of Loughteeog but to no avail and I know that the information will more than likely come from Parish records. The 1901 census shows a head of family Patrick Dunne born 1831 in Loughteeog - could be older brother of Mary. Any ideas please ?
