Hi,

I'm in the process of writing out my family tree.

I would like to be able to add locations to a map, and then add that to a document.

I've done this with Google Maps, but it's 'live' online and I don't know how to add a picture of the map to a document.

Is there anyway to do this?

Technical Help / Stopping the annoying bubbles on Ancestry.com
« on: Monday 23 October 23 16:08 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know how to stop those annoying bubbles that pop up on Ancestry.com when you are trying to fill in someones profile? The ones that say 'Do you know Bob Bob's death date' and stuff like that.

Thank you

The Lighter Side / Duelling newspaper notices.
« on: Sunday 22 October 23 16:48 BST (UK)  »
I've been digging around in the historic newspapers for something else and as usual got sidelined. Found this interesting.

York Herald - Saturday 14 March 1863 (page 7 of 12)

Quote
I, William Robert Brown, Architect, will not be answerable for any Debts that my Wife, Mary Ann Brown, may contract after this date.
1, Stonegate, York, March 13, 1863

Then the next notice reads

Quote
Notice is hereby given that I, Mary Anne Brown, will not be answerable for any Debt or Debts, my Husband, William Robert Brown, Architect, of No 1 Stonegate and 8 South Parade, may contract after this date, as I have never received a Sixpence from him since we were married.
York, March 13, 1863

Wonder if it was real? Or was it some sort of joke in the paper?

Occupation Interests / Cordwainer or translator?
« on: Saturday 21 October 23 19:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm researching someone by looking at the baptism records of their children.

His name is George Knowles. I've not got all his details yet as I'm still trying to piece his life together, but he seems to have been living around the centre of York in the early 1800s.

I'm concerned that I've got two George Knowleses mixed up into one though, because of what appears to be a change of professions.

I have one baptism record from October 1812 for a son called George, whom he has with is wife Hannah.

His profession there is listed as Cordwainer at Petergate, York.

Later on there are other baptisms.

Robert 1815
Henry 1818
Martha 1822

In all of these he's listed as 'translator' at Petergate.

It makes me wonder if 'translator' had something to do with Cordwaining? Because if not, I think it's unlikely I'm looking at the same person here. I can't imagine someone making a jump from Cordwaining to being a translator as we understand it in modern terms.

I've tried googling but the terms are unfortunate for google searches and I just don't get the information I'm looking for.

Thank you

Devon / Benjamin Williams b about 1840
« on: Friday 20 October 23 21:57 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm trying to trace the life of Benjamin Williams.

He was born approximately 1840 in Plymouth, Devon, according to later census records.

My first record for him is from the census in 1891.

Sometime between birth and 1891 he gets married, loses his wife whose name is not known to me and makes the journey up to Durham. I don't know the order of those events.

1891

As you can see he was living in Durham. He was working as a masons labourer. He is listed as being widowed.

One of my relatives Elizabeth Harwood, was living with him working as his 'house keeper'. Two of her children were living with her.

He also has a man called John James Henry visiting him. John James Henry is also a mason's labourer. He was born in Ireland, so not likely to be a family member of Benjamin Williams.

1901

Household schedule number   35

He's now living in a boarding house, with at least 12 other boarders. Neither Elizabeth or John James are with him. He's working as a colliery labourer.

1911

This is the last record I have for him. He's living as a lodger in the house of a Ralph Meadows Price and his family. He's a pensioner and has apparently acquired a disability, having become partially blind.

I have no idea when he died.

I'd love to know what happened to him in those years before 1891, but I've failed to locate him on any records.

Thank you

Ireland / James Henry born 1851
« on: Friday 20 October 23 21:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm trying to trace what happened to James Henry. He was visiting at a house where a relative of mine was staying, and I'm curious to find out what happened to him in life as a result.

My only confirmed record of him, is from the 1891 census.

He was born approximately 1851 and his birthplace is simply listed as 'Ireland'.

In 1891 he was living in Easington, Durham. He was a visitor in the house of a Benjamin Williams, who was originally from Plymouth.

James is listed as single. He was working as a Masons labourer, as was his host, Benjamin Williams.

Also in the house, listed as a 'housekeeper' is my relative Elizabeth Jane Benson and her two daughters.

James does not appear on any other census that I can find for Elizabeth Jane Benson again.

He's also not any subsequent census with Benjamin Williams again.

I'm wondering if anyone can find a trace of him before or after 1891.

Thank you

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / In search of a 2nd Great Grandfather.
« on: Wednesday 27 September 23 01:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone, I'm hoping someone here can talk me through how I might sort this issue out. I might be talking nonsense so apologies in advance.

I'm trying to find out who a missing 2nd Great Grandfather was. This is not the same man as my other post in the DNA section, this is a different branch, different man. I'm going to use hypothetical names here as I don't want to upset anyone who might see this.

Basically I'm descended from a woman called Mary Carson.

Mary Carson married John Forest and they had a couple of children, however because of what was clearly a troubled relationship - I'm not certain of the parentage of any of their children.

However the marriage broke down. John Forest left and joined the army. He lied on his sign up papers and claimed he was single. We know it's the same John Forest, because he gave his mother as next of kin, with the correct address she definitely lived at.

During, or perhaps because of the break up, at least one of the children, we'll call Tom Forest was sent to Canada by a charitable organisation. As far as I can tell, Tom Forest never had children.

I've found John Forest's army papers and had them verified by an expert, who was able to look at the movements of where John Forest would have been stationed. He was definitively abroad for a long period of the 1880s, and of such a low rank that he would not have been able to return home.

After John Forest had left the family, Mary Carson claimed to still be married to John Forest. She had many more children. There birth certificates all list John Forest as the father, even though this is not possible due to the relationship having broken down and John not being in the same country when these children were conceived.

I'm descended from one of these illegitimate children, a daughter I'll call Jane Carson.

So I'm trying to find out who the actual father of Jane Carson was, by looking through my DNA matches.

The issue I have is that when I look at some of the people I match with, they list John Forest as the father in their trees. I assume because they don't have the information that I do. It was hard to find.

I imagine that it's possible that among my matches, there may very well be people with the same 2nd Great Grandfather that I have, as he could very well have fathered other children.

But how do I sort it all out, when it's sort of a mess?

Down / Confused about Edward McAteer
« on: Monday 25 September 23 19:54 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I’m currently looking at a gentleman called Edward McAteer, who I believe was born around 1838 in Down, Northern Ireland.

I’m confused about his spouses, and wondering if maybe I’ve confused two different men called Edward McAteer.

Just as a note, the name is written slightly differently in all the transcriptions I've seen. I've tried to replicate that below, for anyone who wants to check up on the records I've used.

I believe that in sometime around 1860 he married, or at least began a relationship with, a woman called Rose McGivern.

Currently, I do not have a marriage record for this match. I only know about the relationship because of baptism records.

I believe this couple had at least three children. This is based on baptism records I’ve accessed through Ancestry. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to find reference numbers for the records. They are all from the record collection which is known on Ancestry as ‘Ireland, Catholic Parish Registers, 1655-1915’ or ‘Ireland, Births and Baptisms, 1620-1911’

There are slight variations in how the names are written in these transcriptions, so I’ve included those below.

George Henry McAteer,
Baptised 4 May 1861
Clonallon, Down, Ireland
Father Edwd McAteer
Mother Rose McGivern

Patrick Mcateer
Baptised 22 Oct 1865
Father Edward Mcateer
Mother Rose Mcgivern

Edward Mc Ateer
Baptised 7 Aug 1868
Warrenpoint, Down, Ireland
Father Edward Mc Ateer
Mother Rose Mc Givern

Then I get confused because it seems that Edward might have had a second relationship with a different woman because there are two more baptism records. (Unless I’ve mixed up two different people of course)

These records are

Joseph James Mcateer
Baptised 2 Jul 1874
Warrenpoint, Down, Ireland
Father Edward Mcateer
Mother Rose Mckiverking

Rose Ellen Mcateer
Baptised 15 Dec 1876
Newry, Down, Ireland
Father Edward Mcateer
Mother Rose Mcateer Mckiverkiny

The reason that I think all these children might have the same father, Edward Mcateer, is that some of them seem to be living together in 1901.

Rose McAteer (I believe this is the second Rose McAteer), appears on the census in 1901 (Class: RG14), as a widow. So Edward was dead by this point.

Rose McAteer, aged 63

Born about 1838, Co Down
Residence Aughemoire, Warrenpoint, Down, Ireland

With here are Maria McAteer, who I don’t know, but she is aged 42.

Also in the house are Patrick McAteer, aged 34. This puts him within the age range of the Patrick McAteer, from Edwards previous relationship - although the age is a year out.

Also in the house is Rose Ellen McAteer, the daughter of the second Rose and Edward.

One of the other brothers from the ‘first Rose’ are accounted for in 1901. Edward (the younger one) was married to a woman called Sarah and living in another part of Warrenpoint. (They would eventually move to Cheshire).

I can’t find what happened to George at all in 1901

I don’t know if I’ve totally messed up here. I’d be grateful if anyone else could shed some light on my thinking. Thank you.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Sorting out DNA, does this make sense?
« on: Thursday 14 September 23 20:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm very new to sorting out DNA matches. I'm wondering if my line of thinking would be correct here. I really appreciate someone looking over this because I find it all a bit mind bending.

I've been looking for who my 2nd Great Grandfather might have been, as my Great Grandmother was illegitimate, and I've just got in to using DNA to try and work this all out.

Someone came up as a potential 2nd-3rd cousin for me. We’ll call him Bob Wall. Looking at mutual matches, I don’t believe he’s linked to any of my other lines. Ancestry says he's a paternal match, which would be on the side I'm looking for.

Looking at Bob's tree, Bob comes from the Wall family. His Great Grandfather is Simon Wall.

Simon Wall comes from the same geographic area as my 2nd Great Grandmother did, and where my Great Grandmother was born.

Bob and I have another mutual DNA match on Ancestry. Her name, for the purpose of this post, is Mary Kennedy.

Mary has a small tree attached to her DNA results, which I have been able to see.

Mary is also descended from the Wall family. She is descended from John Wall, brother of Simon Wall.

The brothers, John and Simon Wall would both be about the right age to have fathered my Great Grandmother, and a similar age as my 2nd Great Grandmother.

John and Simon Wall have another brother as well. I haven't found any descendants of his so far.

While I understand that I can't say which of them is my 2nd Great Grandfather, is it reasonable to suggest that there is a possibility that my 2nd Great Grandfather was of the 'Wall' line and could have been one of these three men, or their father even?

Especially as I seem to DNA match with both Bob Wall and Mary Kennedy, who are the descendants of two different Wall brothers?

Thank you
