The Common Room / Glass Manufacturer
« on: Wednesday 06 March 24 11:07 GMT (UK)  »
Good morning

This morning I am cleaning an old mirror which has been in my family for over 100 years.

I have removed the glass from the frame and found the manufacturers mark which you can see below on the back which carries the date of 16-3-96 (or possibly 26 at the beginning and 98/9 at the end)

Does anyone recognise the mark and have an idea of where it might have been manufactured?  The family branch it came through moved to Sunderland from Godalming in the early 1830s and was there until 1986.

Many thanks for any ideas

Hi there
Could anyone please help me with a full transcription and explanation of the attached?  I can see that Thomas Struthers the younger is marrying Elizabeth Smith the relict of Thomas Adam, but I'm not sure what all of the other text is telling me.
Many thanks in advance for your help

Scotland / James Kirkwood Biggan
« on: Wednesday 12 July 23 17:57 BST (UK)  »
Hello there

James Kirkwood Biggan was born in Edinburgh in 1859, the last child of 5 of Andrew Biggan and Mary Hutton Kelly.

He married Maggie Scott 19 Dec 1884 in Edinburgh, and they had children Elizabeth Hogg Biggan (1885) Mary Scott Hutton Biggan (1887) both in Edinburgh, and then Jessie Biggan in 1892 in Anderston, Lanark. His wife died in 1897.

In 1891 the two elder children were living in Tranent with their grandparents but there is no sign of Jessie.

James was a baker.  I can find him in 1881 living with his married sister Helen (Marshall), but I cannot locate him in any other censuses.  There is a possible sighting of his wife in 1891 - a Margaret Biggan (marked as unmarried) and working in Edinburgh as a cook to a family called Robertson.  That Margaret Biggan is marked as being born in Tranent in 1864 which would be correct.

Can anyone locate James either in the censuses after 1881, or find a death reference for him?

Many thanks indeed for your help

Scotland / Andrew Crichton/Crighton etc b 1777 in the 1841 Census
« on: Wednesday 12 July 23 17:46 BST (UK)  »
Hello there

I am trying to find an Andrew Crichton (or other spelling) b 1777 in Edinburgh, in the 1841 Census.

He and his wife Sarah Hutton married in Edinburgh St Cuthbert in 1795 and between then and 1812 had 10 children in Stockbridge/Silver Mills.

In 1851 and 1861 Andrew is living as a widower in Kinghorn in Fife, working as a skinner as he was throughout everything I have found so far.

Can anyone please help me locate him in 1841?  I have no idea where his wife was born (though the move suggests a connection to the Fife coast), all that I know is that her father was John Hutton a Mariner/Wright.  I have no idea where/when she died and and hoping she appears in the 1841.

Many thanks

Ashley

Midlothian / Cranston Records
« on: Friday 19 May 23 18:46 BST (UK)  »
Hello there

According to Genuki Cranston Parish has births dating from 1682, marriages from 1784 and deaths from 1738, but the earliest burial on Scotland's People in that parish is from 1853.

Can anyone please tell me another source for the records for this parish - event the Society of Genealogists seems to have nothing.

Thank you

The Common Room / Wilson Orwin Died at Sea - where is the certificate?
« on: Tuesday 02 May 23 12:49 BST (UK)  »
Hello there

I have discovered the long researched death of my ancestor Wilson Orwin was recorded on one of his seaman's Master Certificate applications.  As you can see from the attached image it appears to say 'Cer. Rec'd'

If that is the case does anyone know where that certificate is held? It isn't on the English system

I'd appreciate any advice you can offer

Thank you

Ireland / LDS Catholic Church Records - which parish?
« on: Tuesday 28 February 23 15:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hello there!
I have found a record of interest in on the LDS site amongst its Irish Cathilic Parish Records, but I have no idea where in Ireland it took place.  Does anyone know how to work out which parish it is from the citation?

The reference is:
"Ireland, Catholic Parish Registers, 1740-1900", database, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:68PJ-5TZ2 : 17 March 2022), Mary Biggens, 1837.

Any help you can provide will be very welcome

Thank you!
