Good morning,

I'm hoping that some light can be shed on a question of mine.  I have an indirect ancestor James McMurchy (b. 1831 in Southend (or Campbeltown) Argyll, Scotland) to his mother Margaret McShenoig who was not married to his father (Donald McMurchy).  In an obituary for James, it said he moved with his parents to Canada at aged 2 (in 1833).  Now, I know that James' father Donald McMurchy didn't move because he went on to marry and have other children in Southend after 1832 and he died in Southend in 1836.  So, Margaret McShenoig obviously married (or partnered) with someone else and moved to Canada.  James' obituary also indicated that he moved with his parents to the USA at age 16 and that he has a sister in Joliet, Illinois (no name was given).  So, how is it possible that James went by his surname (birth surname) for all the records that I can find in the USA (I can't find any records in Canada)?  James apparently stayed with his mother but never seemed to go by his stepfather's surname even though he would have been a baby when the stepfather came into his life.

Thanks.

Hello,

I'm trying to figure out what happened to Catherine Riddel.  She was born about 1826, most likely in Hampshire (either Portsea or Portsmouth) as that is where at least one of her siblings were born (and where her parents married in 1816).  I think I found her in the 1851 UK census for Westminster, Middlesex as the entry indicates being born in Portsmouth, Hampshire.  I have found workhouse admission and discharge records for both 1850 and 1851 (the 1851 admission record doesn't give a month or day) with an indication for birth in Portsea/Portsmouth.  It appears she had an illegitimate daughter born in the workhouse (Jul 1850) as the entry indicates she was admitted because of pregnancy and she and the child were discharged together.  I did find the birth record for a Catherine Riddel born Jul 1850 in the Saint Mary Newington Southwark workhouse.  I am unable to find anything after 1851 for her, including a death record.  She is listed as a servant in both the 1851 UK census and the workhouse records.  Would anyone be able to help trace her?  I'm curious to know what happened to her.

Thanks.

The Common Room / Who was Mr. Heggie that married a Cameron
« on: Sunday 04 July 21 21:06 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

This might be a long shot because I have very very little information.  I do not know names, countries or dates.

I have a copy of a photo of a woman that has a handwritten note saying "Mrs. Heggie was a Cameron".  I also have a photo of a Mr. Heggie (son of Mrs. Heggie) that has a handwritten note "Mr. Heggie his mother was a sister of the 4 Camerons"

Can anyone help me find out who "Mrs. Heggie"'s husband was?

[I edited the caption of the photo of Mrs Heggie after taking a closer look and edited out the bit about Mr Heggie being the son of Mrs Heggie since I can no longer confirm that from the edited caption of Mrs Heggie's photo]

Thanks,

United States of America / Dictionary of Scottish Emigrants to the USA
« on: Sunday 04 July 21 20:50 BST (UK)  »
Would anyone have a copy of the Dictionary of Scottish Emigrants to the USA by Donald Whyte and would they be willing to look up a couple of names names for me?

1) Elizabeth Armour emigrated in 1820 to Philadelphia with her brother (John) and sister (Jane).  They were born in Argyll, Scotland.
2) James McMurchy born 1831 in Argyll, Scotland.  I do not know when he emigrated but I do know he was in the USA in the late 1850s.  He may have come over with his mother Margaret McShenoig (or McShannon).

Thanks.

London and Middlesex / Margaret Riddel - Mile End Old Town workhouse
« on: Sunday 21 March 21 18:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm hoping someone might be able to help.  I ordered the death entry for Margaret Riddel (b. 1786 Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland; nee Cochrane; widow of John Riddel) and it indicated that she died in 1859 at the City of London workhouse in Mile End Old Town Eastern district.  Would anyone either know how I could see if I could access (get a copy?) of her records for the workhouse or is anyone able to see if it's available online.  I don't have an active Ancestry subscription.

Thanks!

Perthshire / M(a)cnaughton's from Comrie (Finglen), Perthshire
« on: Sunday 07 March 21 22:29 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm trying to figure out what happened to some of my M(a)cnaughton line that lived in Finglen on Loch Earn.  The baptism records are in the parish of Comrie.  Out of John McNaughtan and Ann McInnes 9 children, I am hoping to get some information on four of them:
Duncan b. 13 Sep 1795
James b. 26 Sep 1799
Daniel b. 27 Jul 1802
Christian (female) b. 16 Aug 1807

I'm wondering if either/all of Duncan, James and Daniel immigrated to Canada.  I think it might be probable given that two of their brothers had immigrated to Canada but I haven't been able to find anything that confirms that any of the Duncan/James/Daniels I find in Canada (Ontario) are the Duncan/James/Daniel that are the sons of John McNaughtan and Ann McInness of Finglen (Comrie), Perthshire.

Any help you may be able to give is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi,

I have never searched for someone in Australia before so I don't even know where to start.

Firstly, apologies as I have very little information on the two people I'd like to see if I can get more information.  What I have is the following.

I am looking for a Thomas Riddel(l) born about 1828 in England and his brother Alexander Riddel(l) born about 1830 in England.  All I have to go on is a mention in a book that they went from London, England to Australia.  The book also indicates that Thomas went during the gold fever.

Their parents were John Riddel(l) (born about 1785) and Margaret Cochrane (b. 1786), who moved around from Portsea, Hampshire to Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, back to Portsea, and London and Chatham.

I have no idea if Thomas and Alexander married, had a family, stayed in Australia or anything.

Would anyone be able to give me some help or at least give me suggestions on how to go about seeing if I can find them in Australia?

Thanks,

London and Middlesex / James (T or J) Riddel b. abt. 1855 - where is he?
« on: Saturday 30 January 21 19:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Hopefully someone can help me.  I'm trying to find a James (T or J) Riddel(l).  He seems to disappear from the family after the 1871 England census.  I have managed to keep track of everyone in this family but him.  Granted they made it easy by not marrying and living together (except brother George who went to the USA) and all but Arthur had an estate probated.  Here's what I know:

Father: James Riddel b. 1823 in Portsea, Hampshire, d. 1844 1884 Westminster, Middlesex
Mother: Margaret Birnie b. 1821 in Gravesend, Kent, d. 1901 Brixton, Surrey
Sister: Margaret Birnie Riddel b. 1852 Westminster, Middlesex, d. 1931 Paddington, Middlesex
Person searching for: James (maybe T or J as middle initial) Riddel b. 1855 in Salehurst, Sussex
Sister: Janet Sarah Riddel b. 1857 Westminster, Middlesex, d. 1926 Brixton, Surrey
Brother: Arthur Alex Riddel b. 1859 Westminster, Middlesex, d. 1919 Lambeth
Brother: George Edward Riddel b. 1864 Westminster, Middlesex, d. 1944 Manhattan, New York
Sister: Alice Birnie Riddel b. 1867 Westminster, Middlesex, d. 1938 Shanklin, Hampshire

In 1871, James Riddel (jr) is listed as aged 16, born in Salehurst, Surrey, a Printers apprentice, and living with his family.  I can't find him after 1871.  I'm also a little surprised that he was born in Surrey when all of his other siblings are born in Middlesex and the father was employed at the House of Commons.  Maybe he moved.  His sister Alice Birnie Riddel moved to Hampshire after (it seems) the sister Margaret died.  Could it be that she moved there because that's where James jr was?  Or did James jr die before the 1881 census was taken?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Graveyards and Gravestones / Dundurn Churchyard - John McNaughton d. 1833
« on: Monday 28 December 20 18:06 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

Does anyone live in the Comrie/St. Fillans area that might be willing to take a wander down to  the Dundurn Churchyard to see if there is a gravestone for a John McNaughton that died in 1833 (and take a picture of it)?  I do not know if there is a gravestone but I know that he was buried there (according to an OPR in ScotlandsPeople).  The Dundurn Churchyard (https://www.pkc.gov.uk/article/14051/Map-of-burial-grounds) is where the remains of the old St. Fillans Chapel are, not too far away from the St. Fillans Golf Course (https://www.google.ca/maps/place/St+Fillans+Golf+Club/@56.390709,-4.1074361,25a,13.3y/data=!3m8!1e2!3m6!1sAF1QipNaZ3Y4-J143ZCU_dK107unR1enzDPN_uljPUga!2e10!3e12!6shttps:%2F%2Flh5.googleusercontent.com%2Fp%2FAF1QipNaZ3Y4-J143ZCU_dK107unR1enzDPN_uljPUga%3Dw203-h360-k-no!7i2988!8i5312!4m5!3m4!1s0x48889391ae773249:0xa9d20131977c0b34!8m2!3d56.3889184!4d-4.1012914).  It's the roundish circle with the rectangle shape in it.

I am trying to figure out of the John McNaughton that died in 1833 and is buried at Dundurn Churchyard is my 4x g-grandfather that lived in Finglen (which is not too far away, on the south shore of Loch Earn).  My John MacNaughton married Ann McInnes and if the John McNaughton buried at Dundurn is my John MacNaughton, I'm hoping that Ann McInnes might be with him.

Thanks,

Liisa
