The Lighter Side / How's this for a distant relation??
« on: Friday 20 February 09 23:48 GMT (UK)  »
I was contacted a while ago by someone who had a name in his family tree he thought must be connected to mine owing to a peculiar collection of middle names which various people had in common. After much detective work we have established the following:

My great, great, grandmother's younger brother's grandson, married a lady who had a son by a previous marriage. The son by the previous marriage, married the half sister of the grandfather of the person who contacted me!

so...... what relation does that make me to him.... does anyone want to try and work it out? No prizes!

Armed Forces / Help with RAF wings
« on: Sunday 31 December 06 15:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone.

I'm hoping someone can throw some light on these two sets of RAF wings which we found in my mum's jewellery box after she died. My daughter who is currently in the RAF, says you don't get wings unless you are a pilot, but I only know of one relative who was, and the two sets are different. She hasn't seen them, we have only just found them.

Can anyone help? Here's hoping anyway!

Thanks Veron  :)

The Common Room / Divorce records 1930's
« on: Saturday 04 November 06 12:58 GMT (UK)  »
I've been not around for a while, but since Anna's WDYTYA query seems to have been answered, can I ask another one please?

On one of the progs (I think it was Nigella) they looked up someone's divorce papers from the late 1930's. I didn't think that was possible, my grandparents were divorced at about that time and I would dearly like to know a bit more about it. Can anyone shed any light?

Much appreciated folks

Occupation Interests / Can anyone read this occupation? - completed
« on: Wednesday 10 May 06 23:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi

i'm struggling with this occupation (1st line on the census extract) - this is a 78 year old widow in 1851, so that rules out quite a lot of things!

Any ideas welcome. I've looked at it small, big and in between and I still can't work out what it can be.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Hampstead 1891 please - completed
« on: Sunday 19 March 06 22:27 GMT (UK)  »
Could someone kindly look up the following person please? She is transcribed as Margaret E Maricester but I think she's my relation Margaret E Muncaster. Born Gainsborough in 1849, living in Hampstead as a servant.

I would dearly like to know whose household she was in!

Any help gratefully receved.

Many thanks, Veron  :D :D

Technical Help / Problems with Scotlands People anyone?
« on: Wednesday 08 March 06 23:35 GMT (UK)  »
I've been trying to access previously viewed scans on Scotland's people. (ie, the ones I've already paid for). Never had any problems doing this before.. but yesterday and today, the actual scans aren't appearing. The page has the same toolbar as if the scan was there, and the same warning that if I want to access the previous or next page there will be a cost, etc - but not the actual scan.

It's a bit bizarre! I've tried changing the viewer, trying different browsers, rebooting the machine, etc. Nothing works.

Any ideas anyone?  ???

One Name Studies: A to G / ELLESON (all)
« on: Sunday 05 March 06 21:13 GMT (UK)  »
Anyone out there researching the ELLESON family?

Earliest known - Thomas Elleson born approx 1815, Lambeth, m Mary Ann Seaker 1836.
Children Ann 1838, Thomas 1839, Joseph Dungate 1841, Leonard Jonathan 1843, William 1845, John 1848.

John married Eliza Emma Love in 1869 (Lambeth)
Children John Stephen 1871, Elizabeth 1872, Stephen Joseph 1875, Kathleen 1876, Joseph 1879, Herbert James 1882, Henry Ernest 1885, Florence Lucy Luisa 1888

John Stephen married Frances Lilian Willams in 1892 (Lambeth)
Children Kathleen Lilian (Kate) 1893, John Henry 1895, Francis Wilfred (Frank) 1896

There is also a branch in Worcester, and some BMD's in Suffolk and Yorkshire but no proven connection from any of these to the Lambeth family.

We would be interested in any news on any Ellesons. Is it someone's spelling mistake which stuck? Are there several distinct families or are we all related several generations back? Any ideas would be welcome.

Derry (Londonderry) / Northern Irish BMDs
« on: Sunday 19 February 06 15:07 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know if there are any online indexes of BMDs registered in Northern Ireland in the early 20th century - I am trying to find out on behalf of someone else, whether there is any chance of finding out about his mother's family, without going to Belfast to check. I have looked on the general records office website, but although you can order certificates online, you have to know the DOB, mother's maiden name, etc, before you start - and he doesn't.

The family in question were all born between 1916 and 1927 or thereabouts in the Maghera area of County Derry.

Any help much appreciated.

The Common Room / Adoptions
« on: Sunday 19 February 06 14:35 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know whether it's possible to find out whether someone was legally adopted, without applying for an adoption certificate if it isn't certain one exists?  A good friend of mine has just discovered he has a half brother, who he has always thought was his cousin - turns out that this "cousin"  was adopted by my friend's aunt after his mum gave birth out of wedlock.

He is just trying to find out a bit more about it, without being insensitive - I think all the people concerned are on pretty good terms so he may be able to find out more from the person himself - but he knew I was interested in tracing the family history and I said I would ask on here!

Any help appreciated.
