Europe / Attempting to research Aleksejs Krilovs, latvia
« on: Sunday 02 July 23 11:54 BST (UK)  »
:).   After many years I’ve finally got a high Dna match to someone from Latvia who has the Krilovs name in their near-ancestry.    Unfortunately he doesn’t know much about the family as his grandmother didn’t speak about family, exactly the same as my grandad didn’t. So, we may be 3rd cousins which is the closest I’ve ever got, his great grandfather was Aleksejs Krilovs born 1914, with a brother named Pavels in 1913, if this is all correct.   My grandad was born 1926 if he was  honest about that. I believe my grandads father (Aleksander Krilovs) may have been Aleksejs brother ?    Family search doesn’t throw anything up and I have a subscription to ancestry but not finding anything on there…. Where do I go from here?  Thankyou.

Would also like to suggest anyone interested in Latvian heritage joins the Facebook sites Latvian Genealogy,   And Latvian Dna.

Glamorganshire / Alice John born 1781 in Llanwonno, no trace
« on: Wednesday 15 September 21 19:10 BST (UK)  »
In my daughters tree from her fathers side , her ancestor is Alice John born 1781 who married a John Morgan in 1800 (also from Llanwonno) and quickly moved to a village called Bishops  Itchington in Warks, England. . Alice died in 1850, she had been widowed three years. I do have her tree to the present day and need no help with that, but although I have an ancestry sub, I can’t afford Find my Past too, and when I click on Llanwonno archives the site directs me to FindMyPast. It’s basically the parents of Alice and/or John I’d love to find. Thankyou for reading!

This isn’t a look up request, I have access to ancestry , but I’m researching the life of a lady named Jeanne Odetta Juliette Western. On one early electoral roll she is Jean, so this may be her birth name. On the 1939 census she is Mrs, and also Mrs on her probate record. So I’m assuming Western is her married name but can’t see a marriage entry….I believe she may have given herself the middle name Juliette, as it appears later on in limited records, unsure if she also gave herself the name Odetta! Can’t see a birth, although her death entry gives birth year as 1911 (would be after the census)  she had a very interesting life and donated a lot of money to cancer research, but it was kept quiet for reasons I ll keep to myself. I can’t get anything on her other than electoral rolls, 1939 census and her death in 1975. Advice appreciated:).  Edit, she was always London based. I should add that I’m not a professional researcher, purely my own interest although one day I wish to research and write something a bit different, hopefully will get published.

Sussex / Is this a permanent brick wall or is there hope? Gypsy CLARK, Sussex
« on: Thursday 28 May 20 18:36 BST (UK)  »
My great great granny was Mary Ann Clark born 1864 in Sussex. I do have her on the 1871, 81, 1901 and 1911 census so I dont need help there. I have her marriage and children so not looking for those thanks, been researching them for many years.   *My question: Can I get further back on her mother's side? Her parents were James Clark born 1845 in Hellingly and GRACE Clark born 1847 in Hellingly according to the census, I believe them to be cousins or 2nd cousins as their marriage cert does indeed give both surnames as Clark and they were Romany gypsies living in wagons. But even researching James' tree, I can't fit Grace in there. They married later in life a couple of years before Grace died. There was no father named on the cert for Grace, just a line, which suggests illegitimacy.  James' father was named however. We know that in 1867 they were in Rye, and in 1871 they were in Buxted, in 1873 they were in Ticehurst, in 1880 they were in Guestling and 1881 'visiting' in Westham; then married 1891 in Horsmonden, Kent. She died two years later in Cuckfield, Sussex. Any ideas welcome. I have done DNA but cant find anyone actively researching James and Grace.

My fiance's grandfather was Gilbert Wilson from Hull, he married Edna Glenville in 1945 (in Hull) who had previously been married to John Dore. They had a son named Glen. Nothing is known about Gilbert, who is believed to have been in the SAS. I have found a 1918 birth entry with mums maiden name Mawson that maybe him in Sculcoates (the birth year taken from probable death entry), I have ordered marriage cert today so obviously not received it yet. I just can't find any record of him and nobody else seems to be researching this Wilson side. Would World War 1 /SAS records exist? I have an Ancestry sub but not the international one. Thankyou.

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Newton's in Hull, possible Jewish link...or not?
« on: Saturday 26 October 19 15:34 BST (UK)  »
I am researching my fiance's family tree, having 'done' mine for thirteen years...but I am instantly stuck! His great grandmother on the maternal side was Kate Newton, born around 1875 we think and died either 1935 or 36, she ALLEGEDLY was Jewish and married a non Jew (Mr Smith) in Hull, I can see no marriage though. If the story is true her family disowned her and she then had 8 kids including my fiance's grandma Millicent in 1919 who was the youngest. The family lived around Lorraine Street, and after her death I see some of her daughters still there on the 1939 census. But I have made contact with a gentleman on Ancestry who is distantly related to Kate and insists the family was not Jewish. My fiance has done Ancestry DNA and we are waiting for results. I believe her husband was Thomas Walter Smith (known as Walter), died in Hull. Yet the man on Ancestry site tells me that Thomas had no middle name. I can't seem to progress, I have attached a photo of Kate and her husband outside a pub they ran in Hull.

Kerry / NELIGAN and Sullivan , Tralee and Ballymullen
« on: Saturday 29 June 19 15:32 BST (UK)  »
Maurice Neligan and Margaret Sullivan of Ballymullen, their daughter Honora born 1854 married a soldier named Joseph Durden at Ballymullen barracks. These are my daughter's ancestors, she has done DNA but nobody seems to be researching the family and apart from their children's baptisms I can't find any more info. Will I ever be able to get further back with Maurice and Margaret or should I give up?

Carmarthenshire / FELINFOEL, LLANELLY
« on: Monday 12 November 18 20:36 GMT (UK)  »
I have received my 3x great grandmothers asylum records and it states that she 'was a native of Felinfoel'. Her name was Mary Price nee Davies and she was born in 1838 according to info her daughter gave. Her parents died of old age and she had three brothers who died of heart disease. Her late husband was James Price a quarryman. But her children were born/baptised in Glamorgan, she probably married there too, and her last address was Aberkenfig in Glamorgan before she died in 1911 in Bridgend asylum. Felinfoel is quite far from Aberkenfig. The name is so common and her childrens death certs dont give anything away. Can I get further back?

I accept that they're possibly hard to find because they're Romany gypsy, but I still feel I'm overlooking something. I have my Jemima Burton (WHO NEVER MARRIED) on the 1939 census in a gypsy wagon in Barry, Glamorgan with her widowed mum Amelia and siblings Richard/Dickie and Albert (both single), plus an Alice Burton who was married. Jemima's birth year given as 1899. Her Caerphilly baptism says born 1910, baptised 1914. The next record I have for her is her death cert which also gives her birthyear as 1910, born Caerphilly, Glamorgan and died 1982 in Cardiff. Her cousin Elizabeth Hern signed with an X. Possibly surname should be Hearne, as some were camping with the family in 1939, although there are some Hern's around Cardiff. My 2nd cousin recalls visiting Jemima 'in the 1960s' but can't remember where, as she was a small child. There was also another brother named Charlie. No surprise I cant find a birth record, they weren't always reg'd. It's her ancestry I want, what was her mum Amelia's maiden name? Did the siblings marry? I cant seem to find anyone on previous census or marriage records. :(
