Aberdeenshire / Bannerman, Aberdeen before 1794
« on: Wednesday 10 May 23 09:07 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find any nugget of information about anyone mentioned in the attached marriage in 1794 Aberdeen. The William Smith mentioned I believe was a glazier and burgess of Aberdeen, but I am trying to establish whether the Alexander Bannerman mentioned, could be the builder/mason of 'Bannerman's Bridge' fame. Certainly the history of the Smith family centres around the Marischal Street area. I did a quick search on Scotland's People and, without any other criteria being entered, the only Alexander Bannerman that it might be was one who died in Oldmachar in 1775, which would fit with him being deceased at the time of the 1794 marriage. Any clues as to Alexander, James Buchan, shipbuilder (could be Hall & Buchan??) or John Gordon the painter, would be a great result! Thank you.

Angus (Forfarshire) / Dundas - Brechin / Careston area
« on: Saturday 25 February 23 16:18 GMT (UK)  »
I'm struggling to break my Dundas brick wall. I have a Jane Dundas born c1780 in Brechin (I believe) and married to a David Buchan, a carpenter. She died at Whiteside of Careston in 1859. Her parents were John Dundas (born c1755?) and Ann Nicoll. I can't find any births or marriages that might match the parents. If anyone has a book of the MI's at Careston churchyard, could you have a look and see if there are any Dundas or Buchan entries for me? Thank you.

Scotland / Cousins - German
« on: Thursday 02 February 23 16:37 GMT (UK)  »
On a Scottish marriage certificate in 1898, an entry under the bride's occupation has me baffled. It looks like it says "Cousins - German". If so, why would this be important enough to be entered here?

Aberdeenshire / Kilgour / Milne / Dundas - Aberdeen
« on: Tuesday 03 May 22 09:56 BST (UK)  »
Hoping to connect the dots! In my family tree I have a Jean/Jane Kilgour (1781 - 1846) who married a John Dundas (1781 - 1857). There is a memorial inscription in St Machar's Churchyard Aberdeen, which says: "MILNE - In memory of John Milne, at Woodside, this stone is erected to his memory by his affectionate spouse, Katherien (Katherine?) Kilgour, d. 30 July 1830 aged 88 years; also Helen, d 30 July 1830, daughter of Benjamine Dundas, age 2 years 10 months; David Hobbs Dundas, son of Joseph Dundas, d 16 October 1841, age 2 years 7 months; likewise Jean Kilgour, spouse of John Dundas, Spirit Dealer, d 31 January 1849 age 69 years." The above names fit with what I also know. Following this up, I accessed the Will of Katherine Kilgour from Scotland's People and Jean Kilgour is also mentioned as a minor beneficiary along with various others including "Alexander Kilgour, surgeon"..."Alexander Kilgour, Printfield" and "John Kilgour, Rothiemay, Banffshire". I have never been able to figure out the connection between Jean/Jane Kilgour and Katherine Kilgour... (sister? mother? aunt?)... and also between Katherine Kilgour and Alexander Kilgour, who I believe was an eminent doctor in Aberdeen (I believe there is an MI for him in St Peter's Cemetery, Aberdeen). Any help much appreciated!

Lanarkshire / Robert Carson - 8 Swan Street, Port Dundas
« on: Thursday 11 November 21 17:05 GMT (UK)  »
Thought I would ask here for some help! I have found a Robert Carson (whose family I am looking for) in the 1865 and 1875 Valuation Rolls, living at 8 Swan Street, Port Dundas. I thought it would be simple to find him therefore in the 1871 Census living at the same address but have had no luck so far. I cannot figure out which Registration District or Parish the street was in as it seems to change from time to time.

Angus (Forfarshire) / Looking for the Talbert family in 1871 Census
« on: Wednesday 02 June 21 13:26 BST (UK)  »
I first looked for this family a few years ago in the 1871 Census, then went off in a different direction... forgot about it... and have now returned to try and find the family in the 1871 Census. I wondered if anyone might have any ideas where else to look! Details are: William Talbert (gardener) born c1837 and Agnes Edwards (domestic servant) born 1841, who married in 1863 at Seaton Smithy, Arbroath. By the time of the 1871 Census I would expect to see the couple, along with the illegitimate son that Agnes gave birth to earlier in 1863, namely John Edwards (my gg-grandfather)... so he'd be 7 or 8 years old. Also, by 1871 the couple would have had another child Elizabeth Margaret Jane Talbert, who was born in 1866... so would've been around 5. Another son, William followed in late 1871, so I wouldn't expect to see him. I have the family in the 1881 Census living at 28 Lillies Wynd Arbroath. So my question is... where were they in the years between the marriage and 1881? I'm very surprised that they weren't still in Arbroath, but can't seem to find them. Any help or advice greatly appreciated.

Aberdeenshire / St Peters Cemetery - general burials query
« on: Monday 10 May 21 11:24 BST (UK)  »
Is it normal for burial plots be re-used/sold to different groups of people? if so, is this because no one has paid for the upkeep of the plot and it's re-sold to someone else? I have a copy of a certificate of a lair 'purchase' in St Peters in the early 1900s... and as you would expect there are several members of the family listed in the burial archives after that date, whose names I recognise. However, before that date there are several seemingly unrelated people, including a group of children of (presumably) the original purchaser back in the 1850s. I know that the father of these children subsequently died abroad and the mother and remaining children moved away from Aberdeen in 1854. Also, having visited the plot, there is a stone with some names I recognise as being on the burial archives, but also other family members whose names aren't listed at all.

Aberdeenshire / Aberdeen stonemasons in Vermont
« on: Thursday 08 April 21 11:34 BST (UK)  »
My first post on here for quite a while! I've been researching a group of Aberdonian stonemasons who emigrated to Barre, Vermont, probably around 1890-ish and wondered if anyone recognises these names or has them in their tree: James Garden Lamont (married to Cecelia Thomson), William Jopp (married to Alice Blake), John Chesser (married to Alexandrina Brock) and William C. Rust (married to Margaret Brown). Other names I am interested in... McKerron, McKernan, Peter McMorrow, James Barron... to name but a few!  :)
