I have a William Long who according to another researcher died 14 Jul 1855 age 60 at Greenwich. The researcher has his wife listed as died 14 Jul 1858 Wandsworth .(worldconnect site) I sent to the GRO for both certificates - the one I received for Elizabeth Long died 1858 was the correct one. But the one I received for William Long was the wrong one. From free BDm i had 1855 Dec 1/4 Greenwich 1d 581 - the GRO sent me one for a William Long same 1/4 Greenwich 1d 381 - so assume that was the only William Long died then but it was for a young lad of 20
Is it possible to find a person without sending for certificates and just hoping to hit the correct one- there are so many William Longs?

Hi All
I am seeking Ann Crossland/ Crosland born abt 1796 . I am told she spent some time in the Basford Union Workhouse and wonder if she was there in 1841 or 1851. I loose contact with her after 1817 when she becomes an unwed mother.

Devon Lookup Requests / look up request plymouth 1823 parish registers
« on: Thursday 01 March 07 02:42 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
i hope I am not asking for something that is too difficult here
I have an ancestor Sophia Furseman born 1823. On the 1881 and the 1891 census she says she was born in Gibraltar but I have just found that on the 1851 census she claims to come from Devonport Devon. The family story is that she was born on a ship. I am hoping that she was christened when she returned to Devonport.
Is it possible to look for a birth for a Furseman/ Furzeman/ Fursman around that date.
Am I right in assuming Devonport will come under Plymouth?
regards
Debbie

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / William and Elizabeth Long 1841 /1851
« on: Friday 23 February 07 01:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All
I wonder if anyone can help me with the following. I believe a William (born 1795 London) and Elizabeth Long (born Elizabeth Stephenson 1795 London) are my ancestors. Another researcher has the deaths of William recorded on worldconnect as 1855 Greenwich and Elizabeth 1858 Clerkenwell.
I would like  to verify the death dates and find this couple either together or seperately on the 1841 and 1851 census'.
Any suggestions for further research gratefully received. If I have the correct William he should be a mariner.

Australia Lookups completed / STuck for 10 years any clues?
« on: Sunday 27 August 06 05:21 BST (UK)  »
For about 10 years I have been trying to find the parents of Charlotte Johnstone ( Johnston) . There is a birth for a Charlotte Johnstone on the Qld pre separation index but it gives a birth date as well as a christening and at age 8 she would be far too young.
She was the ward of Mrs Elizabeth Ann Devine at her marriage in 1862 usual place of residence Three Mile Creek,Ipswich. She made her mark on the certificate but a Mary Johnstone signed as a witness.
If Mary was her mother why was she someones ward. At first I thought Mary might be a sister but Charlotte uses the middle name Mary.
Her death certificate shows

Charlotte Rabbitt, date 30 Oct 1904 at Brookfield Farm near Inglewood
occupation: Selector
cause : Rupture, general asthenia
name and surname of father : Johnstone
No other details of father listed
certified by: James Rabbitt, son , Brookfield near Inglewood
Buried: 30 ct 1904 , Inglewood
Two witnesses: J.C. Sandford, E. Duffy
Where born and how long in Australia states, stating which : Sydney , New South Wales, all life in Queensland and New South Wales
Where and When married: Ipswich, Queensland
Age at marriage: 16 years
To whom: John Rabbitt
Issue living in order of birth , their names and ages:
living- John 40, Robert 38,Annie 36,Charlotte 33, Harriet 31, William 28,Walter 26,James 22, Agnes 20, Edward 17, Lily 15
Deceased - 2 males , 1 female

the birth of a child gives the place of birth as Brisbane the death certificate gives Sydney

Any ideas?
Debbie

Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / Crosland of Cotgrave 1841 or 1851 census
« on: Saturday 22 October 05 07:27 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find the family of William and Mary Crosland of Cotgrave, Nottinghamshire.
Mary was born  in  Cotgrave about 1775 and had children christened in Cotgrave
Mary  1796 Cotgrave
George  1808 Cotgrave
Elizabeth  1802 Cotgrave
William  1805 Cotgrave
Sarah  1814 Cotgrave
Ann 1799 Cotgrave

I believe Ann had an illegitimate son Frederick born in Lenton 1817 and then may have married Luke Wilson but can not be sure as this is not the only Ann Crosland marrying

Armed Forces / Paymaster Robert Fitz how to locate
« on: Saturday 24 September 05 01:03 BST (UK)  »
I am researching Robert Fitz born 1772 probably in England died Australia 1834 .
In   "Rum Rebellion" Evatt  claims that while Fitz had been a paymaster of another regiment in Ireland he had absconded ," taking with him a considerable portion of the property of the regiment."

How would I discover which regiment ?

He is listed in the 1828 census of NSW as  not in receipt of naval or military pay or superannuation or retired allowance.
