Shropshire / Daniel Sumner Accidental death 1837
« on: Saturday 18 December 21 11:46 GMT (UK)  »
I have a copy of a death certificate for my 5 x Great Grandfather Daniel Sumner.
He died October 18th, 1837.
He was a pump maker aged 63.
Cause if death is 'accident'
Informant was Daniel Sumner. Whitchurch
Registered 7th December.

I'd love to find out more about his death, so how would I go about finding info in the local newspapers at the time?

And obviously to ensure its the correct person.

Thanks

Gloucestershire / Richard Hunt St. Helena
« on: Tuesday 28 September 21 23:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I've been unsuccessfully researching Richard Hunt born in Nenagh, Ireland in 1834.

I've come across a Richard Hunt born in St. Helena, Ireland (Obviously misinterpreted as island).
He is living in Bristol in the 1841 and 1851 census with parents John and Catherine Hunt.
John is a police sergeant.
Richard also has an older sister Mary, born in Madeira, Cork, (but again, this must've been a misinterpretation), living with them.

I can't find any records for him after 1851, so would it be possible for somebody to help me discover anymore information for him please?

Thanks in advance

Richard

Kent / Margaret Cook Woolwich 1861
« on: Wednesday 14 July 21 14:00 BST (UK)  »
I'm researching my Great great Grandfather Richard Hunt and for years I've hit a brick wall (I have posted on this site too, but am still struggling with him...

I've recently discovered a child of his that we didn't know about who was living with her aunt in the 1881 census in Woolwich.

The child is Mary Ellen Hunt born in Jersey in 1875 (her father was Royal Horse Artillery).

Her aunt was Margaret Cook, born in Ireland in 1824 (Richard Hunt was born in Nenagh in 1835 and his wife's parents were from Kerry).

Margaret was a widow in 1881.

In 1861 she was living with Charles Cook who was born in Grayton, Lincolnshire in 1816.

I can't find any marriage records for them to verify if her maiden name was Hunt or Connors (Mary Ellen's mother was Mary Connors).

I have no siblings for Richard Hunt, but I do have several for Mary Connors, but none were called Margaret. (as far as I know!!!)

Any help in discovering her maiden name would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Richard

Cheshire / Jane Roberts, Warrington
« on: Friday 19 February 21 15:03 GMT (UK)  »
I posted the other year about Selina Oakes born 1844 and had some very helpful replies.
However it has created another mystery.

The replies told me that her mother was Jane Roberts born Warrington in 1818ish and her father was Thomas Oakes, born in Styall, Cheshire 1808ish.

Selina had a sister called Elizabeth Ann.

The information I have so far is:

1844 Selina born on 26th June Styall, Pownall Fee, to Thomas Oakes, Farmer and Ann Oakes nee Roberts (not Jane).

1847 Elizabeth Ann born 14th March in Everton, to Thomas Oakes, a labourer and Ann Oakes nee Roberts.

1851 census living at Gorton Brook, Manchester, Thomas 34 Carter born in Styall Cheshire
                                                                       Jane                    born in Warrington
                                                                       Ellen      7
Elizabeth (all the rest is unreadable due to water
                                                                                       damage).

1861 census living at 307 John st. (right next to Gorton Brook).
Thomas 43 Watchman Morley Wilmslow (close to
                                                                                                                                  Styall).
                                                                      Jane 31                        Warrington.
Helena Cotton weaver 16 Stean Green, Warrington
                                                                                                            (Never heard of it)
                                                                       Elizabeth cotton weaver 14 Liverpool.
Sarah Thornby sister in law   30 Warrington

1863 19th August, Jane Oakes nee Roberts dies aged 32 from sudden death, natural causes!!!!!! wife of Thomas Oakes watchman, living in Gorton Brook.

1864 October 2nd Elizabeth Ann Oakes marries Joseph Vernon a Carter. Elizabeth is aged 20? a corr keeper? her father Thomas a farmer. Both living at Gorton Brook.

1865 25th Feb, Elizabeth Vernon dies aged 20 of pneumonia, wife of Joseph Vernon a carter living at 1 John Street.

1865 October 1st Joseph Vernon a carter and widower marries Selina Oakes. He's living at 6 John st
she is 25 living at 2 John st. and her father is Thomas a watchman.

1868  November 7th Thomas Oakes 49 a widower and labourer marries Eliza Sherrat a widower both living on Pinapple st Openshaw. Thomas's father is Thomas.

There are a few discrepancies in the story:

Jane being Ann on the birth certificates
Selina being Ellen then Helena, before being Selina and her birth place in Warrington, which I think is a mistake.
Thomas Oakes job changes, which is very possible.

Could somebody possibly check the the facts for me please and tell me if they're right or wrong.
And Parents for Thomas Oakes, I do have a possibility for one born in Pownall fee? And Jane/Ann Roberts in Warrington.
I couldn't find any information sister in law Sarah Thornby aged 30 born in Warrington on the 1861 census

Thanks in advance

Scotland / Donald McDonald 1854
« on: Friday 13 November 20 19:45 GMT (UK)  »
I'm researching my partners family tree and her Great Grandmother Megan McDonald married a William Williams in Carnarvon in 1936.
Her parents were Richard McDonald b1893 in Carnarvon and Mary Blodwen Williams born on Anglesey in 1896.
Richards parents were Maggie Morgan born c1864 in Pwllheli, Caernarvonshire and Donald McDonald born in Scotland in 1854. Married 17/08/1886 in Llanbedrog, Caernarvonshire.
There are a few trees on Ancestry, with the same family who have Donald being born in Contin Ross-shire to parents John McDonald and Isabella Mclennan...

But, how do I know if this is correct?

Just looking for marriages for John and Isabella, on Scotlands people, there are a few in Ross and Cromarty. However, there is one, - which if Donald is from Contin,- on 12/05/1848 in Contin, where John McDonald is from Alchity and isabella McLinnan is from Tarvie?

I just need to get the link to Donald being born in Contin?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Ireland / McGrory Pettigo, Donegal to Camlough, Armagh
« on: Tuesday 03 November 20 13:26 GMT (UK)  »
Could anybody help or give advice how to find out why my Great Grandfather, John McGrory would move all the way from Pettigo in Donegal to Camlough in Armagh, between the years of 1873 and 1901?
Was it a common thing?
He was born in 1872 in Pettigo to parents John McGrory and Bessy Young.
Not sure when his father died, but he's not on the 1901 census and Bessy is a widow also living in Camlough with other family members, but she's reverted to being called Eliza.
In the 1911 census John has added an e into the surname making it McGrorey, (nobody knows why, maybe a mistake that stuck??)
The story through the family was that they had to keep moving to search for work. I know times were hard in Ireland in those days with the wicked landlords, but it does seem quite a long way...
They did move to Scotland between 1911 and 1920

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Luke Broady
« on: Wednesday 14 October 20 22:23 BST (UK)  »
Could somebody please verify if I'm going down the right path.
I have an ancestor called Luke Broadie (love his name), born in Ashton in Makerfield, who married a Mary Booth from Almondbury, in 1815 at All Hallows Almondbury.
When I initially found the information, there were two Mary Booths, born in the mid 1790's, but only one born in All Hallows.
Her parents were John Booth and Lydia Beamont.
I seem to be on a bit of a roll with Lydia's ancestors, tracing back to her Great Grandparents, (into the 17th century) all from Almondbury and I could probably go further back.
So, my issue is, I don't want to carry on, if I've chosen the wrong Mary Booth who married Luke Broadie.
Luke and Mary moved to Manchester some time after 1825, when my GGG Grandmother Mary was born and before the 1841 census.
Thanks in advance

World War One / James Loughrey
« on: Thursday 18 June 20 21:36 BST (UK)  »
Can anybody identify the Regiment please?

My Great grandfather, James Augustine Loughrey is in it. Nobody knew he served in the army, so it has come as a bit of a surprise.

He was born in Bangor, Ireland in 1882 and had his own grocery store there.

He moved to Manchester around 1913/1914 and eventually settled in Blackpool.

I know his brother John Malachi  Loughrey served in the Manchester regiment and was killed in 1917.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Richard
