Caernarvonshire / William Jones weaver, Penmachno
« on: Tuesday 19 May 20 14:44 BST (UK)  »
I know very little about Henry. There is a record for his son’s baptism John Jones, my 2x Grandfather in Penmachno.
16/11/1798 John son of William Jones Weaver and Ellinor
The only other information I can find is that there is a gravestone for Elinor in St Tudclud’s church Penmachno.
Er cof am Ellinor, gwraig Wm. Jones Weaver, Llan a fu farw Mai 19 1842 oed 84.
Elinor wife of William Jones Weaver died 19 May 1842 aged 84. She lived in Llan which in this case I take to be the village of Penmmachno surrounding the church.
The following could have no bearing but I include it just in case- Googling “William Jones Weaver” provides a link to “Pattern book of William Jones weaver, from Holt, 1775-1782”
I have been unable to find Elinor in the 1841 Census but would be grateful for any help.

Caernarvonshire / William Parry, mariner, Portmadoc
« on: Friday 08 March 19 15:22 GMT (UK)  »
William Parry a mariner married my 2x Great Grandmother, Jane Jones, on 9th November 1841 at St Cynhairn Church near Pentrefelin, Ynyscynhairn. Other than this marriage I have very little information about him. At the time he was full age, occupation mariner, father Harry Parry and residence Portmadoc.
From the 1851 Census (HO107/2512/547/47) Jane and her 3year old son Henry Parry were living at No. 1 Constitution Hill, Portmadoc. Jane was born in Abererch not Portmadoc as shown on the Census. I cannot find William, he may have been away at sea.
By the 1861 Census (RG09/4327/33/17) Jane is a widow still with her son Henry and now with a 7year old daughter Jane Jones (illegitimate).
I assume that William died between 1848 and 1853 although not guaranteed.
Any help in finding where and when William was born and when and where he died would be much appreciated.

Caernarvonshire / What happened to Ann Price?
« on: Tuesday 30 October 18 12:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I am trying to find out what happened to Ann(e) Price born around 1847 on her grandmother’s (Catherine Owen) farm Bryllangedwydd, Abererch. Her mother was also called Anne Price nee Owen who died in 1849.
In the 1851 Census, HO107/2513/131/14, Ann aged 3 and her brother Robert aged 4 are lodging with a pauper/tailor’s family at Penybont a cottage adjacent to Brynllangedwydd. Their father, Richard Price, is a visitor. Robert died the following year.
In the 1861 Census RG9/4326/65/1, Ann aged 13 is living with her great uncle, Ellis Owen, on his farm Cefnymeusydd isaf, Ynyscynhairn. I have been unable to find her after this point.

I would be grateful for any help.

Caernarvonshire / Y Gestiana - Descendents of Humphrey Owen, Garreg Wen
« on: Tuesday 31 July 18 21:07 BST (UK)  »
Hi
If anyone has the Welsh version of Y Gestiana, the 1892 book about the history of the Porthmadog area, would you please check the attached page from the English translation version for accuracy. The section concerning the family of the famous harpist Dafydd y Garreg Wen is totally at odds with the family tree [8] in T Ceiri Griffith's Achau.
In Achau Humphrey Owen's daughter Ann Humphreys married John Griffith not Dafydd Owen.
Also in Achau the Dafydd who married Elizabeth Roberts, Ty Mawr Treflys was the son of Owen Owens who in turn was the son of Owen Humphrey son of Humphrey Owen.
I am interested in the accuracy since I have lines through both my Nains which converge with Humphrey Owen, or at least I thought they did until I saw this biography.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Four girls and a dog
« on: Tuesday 05 June 18 15:00 BST (UK)  »
Hello
I have recently received a family photo of which the sender had no details. I am guessing that it may be four daughters of my Grandfather’s eldest brother. I am hoping to ascertain which of the four sisters they are from the dating of the photo. The five sisters were as follows:
Jannet Ivy born 1888, Elizabeth Ellen born 1893, Susie Annis Joyce born 1894, Doris Maria born 1896 and Olwen Victoria born 1901.
It seems obvious that the oldest girl is the one standing at the back but is it Jannet or Elizabeth?
I would be grateful for you opinions.

Caernarvonshire / Owen Owen/Evans (1798-1851)
« on: Wednesday 31 January 18 14:15 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find the baptism record for one of my GG Grandfathers Owen Owen/Evans (1798-1851) but the possible solutions I have found do not seem to follow the expected Welsh tradition of retaining family names i.e. first son named after paternal grandfather, second son named after maternal grandfather, etc.
At his wedding to Elizabeth Hughes in Caerhun in 1824 Owen’s second name was Owen, by the time of the baptism of his third child, Mary, in 1828 it had changed to Evans. This was a common occurrence at the time. I had assumed from this that the first name was patronymic i.e. his father’s first name was Owen, and then Owen had later taken his father’s second name Evan as a surname. For years I have had to leave it at this point since I could not find a match since the only clue I had to Owen’s birthplace was from the 1841 Census and that only indicated that it was Caernarvonshire. Since then I have found the scan of the register for Mary’s baptism at Roe Calvanistic Methodist Chapel in Caerhun, this gives Owen’s birth parish as Gyffin.
There are two boys named Owen baptised in Gyffin around 1798:
Owen son of David Owen Labourer and his wife Elizabeth
Owen son of Thomas Evans Farmer and his wife Anne
My problem is that none of those first names appear in the list of Owen and Elizabeth’s children who are:
Evan, Grace, Mary, William, Jane, William, Robert and Hugh
Elizabeth’s parents were Hugh Thomas and Grace Williams also Grace’s parents were William Roberts and Jane Evans. This would indicate that Owen and Elizabeth were following the tradition of naming their children after their parents and grandparents. Who were Evan, Mary and Robert named after?
I would be grateful for any thoughts on the matter.

Wales / William & Ann Jones Bancog, Capel Garmon and Dolwyddelan
« on: Tuesday 09 January 18 11:20 GMT (UK)  »
Trying to find the parents of William and Ann Jones who lived on the farm Bancog, Capel Garmon, Denbighshire from around 1825 to the 1850’s before moving to Dolwyddelan, Caernarfonshire. Because there are so many Jones’s it is proving difficult finding the right one.
The censuses from 1851 to 1881 consistently point to William being born between April 1789 and April 1790 while Ann was born between April 1796 and April 1797 and the place of their birth was Capel Garmon. The couple were married in Capel Garmon on 30th October 1819 no parents’ names are given only the two witnesses William Jones and John Jones. Their first child, another William Jones, was born the following year. They had nine children named in order William, John, Margaret, Anne, Elinor, Hannah, Gwen, Elizabeth and Humphrey.
Looking at the baptism records on Findmypast there seems to be two possibilities for Ann
1796 June 10th Anne daughter of William Jones of Plas yn Rhos by Margaret his Wife
1797 May 28th Anne daughter of William Vaughan of Unys by Eleanor his Wife
The first one being my favourite without any proof. Could the father be the William Jones who was a witness?
There are more possibilities for William:
1789
May 19th William son of William Jones Garthgarmon by Margaret his Wife
June 30th William son of Humphrey Jones of Tybrith Uchaf by Margaret his Wife
November 2nd William son of John Williams of Garthgarmon by Eleanor his Wife
1790
April 20th William son of Henry Jones of Tybrith Uchaf by Anne his Wife
Any ideas on how to proceed from here would be gratefully accepted.

Caernarvonshire / Hannah Williams nee Vaughan, Penmachno
« on: Friday 15 December 17 20:17 GMT (UK)  »
A few years ago there was a topic, http://www.rootschat.com/links/01l64/ , about the three Vaughan sisters from Penmachno, Barbara, Sarah and Hannah. Barbara Roberts nee Vaughan was my 3x Great Grandmother. I believe that the Hannah Williams in the following 1851 Census in Penmachno was Hannah Vaughan who married John Williams in 1835.
House Bryn
John Williams      Head   38   Quarry Man      Festiniog, Merionethshire,
Hannah Williams   Wife   36   Quarry Man Wife   Penmachno, Caernarvonshire,
Robert Williams      Son   14   Slate Maker      Penmachno, Caernarvonshire,
Richard Roberts      Son   12   Scholar         Penmachno, Caernarvonshire,
John Williams      Son   10   Scholar         Penmachno, Caernarvonshire,
Catherine Williams   Daur   8            Penmachno, Caernarvonshire,
Janet Williams      Daur   6            Penmachno, Caernarvonshire,
HO107/2508/438/5

My query is where are the family in the 1841 Census and any ideas why the second son has a different surname.

A scan of a great grandfather I received sometime back. Can anything be done to improve it?

Many thanks
