Europe / SPRANG Family -- Germany
« on: Tuesday 15 August 17 18:08 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for any information on the SPRANG surname in Germany. All I have for information is Kurt Carl Sprang was born in Germany in 1905. I know he moved to Canada at some point. I do have a passenger list from 1929 for a Kurt Sprang coming to Canada who is listed as being born in Germany in Tilsit. Once in Canada he met and married Frieda Louise Carlton and they had 2 children. I have all the info on Frieda and the children--it's his parents and grandparents etc. that are a blank. He died in 1967 in Edmonton, Alberta. I would love to fill in some blanks on his side of the family. If anybody has any information at all about the SPRANG family it would be greatly appreciated for you to share with me.

Norfolk Lookup Requests / burial record lookup request for Bartholomew JEWSON
« on: Saturday 08 November 14 04:32 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for a death date for Bartholomew JEWSON born Dec 14, 1814 in Terrington St Clement, Norfolk, England.

He married Mary Ann SMITH (1815-1906) June 1, 1837 in Terrington St Clement, Norfolk, England.

They had 8 kids (that I know of):

Frances
Frederick William
Bartholomew
Sophia Julia
William Smith
Arthur Smith
Alfred Smith
Agnes Ann

I've traced him as far 1891 where he and his wife were living in St. Paul Deptford with their daughter Agnes and her husband and kids. I can't find any mention of him after the 1891 census.

There's a slight possibility he's in the BMD 1897 death index as JEWKES instead of JEWSON but I have no way to confirm that one way or the other.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

World War One / reason for lying about age on enlistment papers?
« on: Sunday 10 August 14 18:11 BST (UK)  »
I know sometimes the young guys would lie about their age to get into the military 'cause they weren't quite old enough yet, but any idea why an adult would lie about their age? I have enlistment papers for my great grandfather dated 1915 and he lied about his age by 3 years. He would've been 28 when he enlisted, but fudged the year so he appeared to be 31. Any idea what the point of him doing that would've been?

Oops, forgot to mention it was the british military he was enlisting with.

Essex / Gladys Ruby Frances CLOVER (b1904)
« on: Sunday 13 April 14 18:38 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find out what happened to one of my ancestor's. Gladys Ruby Frances CLOVER was born in 1904 to Robert Charles CLOVER and Mary Elizabeth CLOVER (nee Francis). I know the family moved to Canada and in the 1921 Canada census Gladys is living with her family in Edmonton, Alberta. I have a passenger list that shows she tried to go the USA by herself when she was 16 but was denied entry. Past that she's just missing. I can't find anything about her. According to other family members she married and ended up living on a plantation in the USA but I have no idea if she married in Canada and then moved or if she moved to the USA and then got married. If anyone has any information at all they can tell me about Gladys it would be greatly appreciated.

Canada Lookup Request / Jack Brown 1927-1960 hamilton ontario canada
« on: Thursday 03 April 14 04:55 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for either an obituary for Jack Brown (1927-1960) born in Hamilton, Ontario or a newspaper article about the accident he was killed in. I don't have a date of the accident, but he died March 26, 1960. I don't know if he was killed on scene or died in the hospital afterwards. The accident, I believe, happened in Brampton, Ontario. He was driving a milk truck and was hit by a train while crossing the tracks. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Not sure if this will help or not but his wife's name was Edna.

The Lighter Side / weird geography question
« on: Tuesday 22 October 13 03:55 BST (UK)  »
My husband's grandma was born in 1916 during WWI in Aliciwa, Russia. Now, her family was german and she was born in a concentration camp. I can't find any reference anywhere to any place called Aliciwa. I've tried different spellings 'cause I'm not 100% sure the spelling is correct. I've tried searching for Aliciwa, Russia. Aliciwa, Germany. I have no clue really if Aliciwa is supposed to even be a town or the name of the concentration camp. Has anyone ever heard of this place? I'm not even looking for info on grandma herself at this point as I have all that, but I'd really like to know where on earth Aliciwa is or was. Or if it's called something else now or whatever.

Canada / looking for an obituary or death notice
« on: Saturday 19 October 13 23:59 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for a death notice or obit for my great aunt. She was born Sarah Holford Roll in England in 1899. Her parents were Robert Beaver Perry Roll and Anne Trotter. She died in Canada, in Saanichton, BC in 1998. At time of death her name was Sarah Umbers. At some point in her past she was married to a Walter Walker.

I've tried everything I can think of to search for her on various sites and other than her being listed as a child in the 1901 and 1911 census in the UK, she doesn't come up in any results and I feel totally lost. I'd also like, if possible, to find out where she's buried 'cause no one knows where she is.

Essex Lookup Requests / Robert Charles CLOVER
« on: Monday 14 October 13 00:33 BST (UK)  »
I'm desperately trying to find out info about my great grandparents but have very little to go on. I'm interested in Robert Charles Clover (possibly born 1945?) who married Elizabeth Mary Frances. They had 4 children together: Ethel, Ruby, Strathcona, and Owen and then Elizabeth had 2 from a previous marriage: Kathleen, and Clifford. I have some limited info about their kids as Ethel is my grandma but no one knows anything about her parents Robert and Elizabeth. I've chosen this Essex board to post 'cause Ethel was born in Colchester so it's the best starting point I've got. I've been at a dead end for several years now for that side of the family--they seem to just be this giant question mark in my family. Anyone who can be of any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
