Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / WW2 Service Record
« on: Wednesday 23 May 18 15:16 BST (UK)  »

Please could anyone get the word that follows 'Honest and .... ' towards the end of the writing?

Thank you

I would be most appreciative if someone could kindly clean this up, I have had a very poor attempt with 'paint', but this is the blank canvas with some nasty rusty paper clip marks and a horrible splodge next to the head!

Thank you.

United States of America / 1870 US Federal Census - cannot find couple
« on: Tuesday 10 April 18 15:59 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find the 1870 US census entry for a Henry & Marion Young, to try and establish if they had adopted a girl called Alice by this time.

Both Henry and Marion were born in 1845, Henry in Ohio and Marion in England.  They were married in 1867 in Chatfield, Minnesota.

On the 1875 Minnesota State Census they had got Alice Young in the household (born 1867).

They can be found on subsequent federal and state censuses in Jordan, Fillmore County
(Henry died in 1889 & Marion in 1923).  Alice disappears from all records after the 1885 census, although this was not through death as she is referenced in Marion's will in 1923 (obvious assumption is got married but no record to find out her new surname).

Henry does appear as Henry J Young or H J Young and Marion also appears as Marian however taking into account all variations I cannot pick them up on the 1870 census.

Any assistance most gratefully accepted.

« on: Saturday 18 November 17 22:19 GMT (UK)  »
I have three possible siblings whose surnames is Lofts and their mothers maiden name is also Lofts.

John P Lofts born 1914 in Edmonton
Doris L Lofts born 1918 in Edmonton
Irene L Lofts born in 1921 in Edmonton

Running a search for a marriage of a Lofts to a Lofts is bringing up no results, short of ordering a birth certificate can anyone crack this any other way ?

Dorset Lookup Requests / Obituary Look-Up Local Bournemouth Newspapers 1954
« on: Thursday 05 October 17 10:21 BST (UK)  »
I am hoping to find an obituary for a Dr Anthony McCall in any of the local Bournemouth newspapers of the time.

His date of death was 30.09.1954 and he had lived and worked in Bournemouth since 1899 and so think there is a good possibility there might be one.

I do have his obituary from the British Medical Journal 15.10.1954 issue, but was hoping to find a newspaper version. I also have his national probate index entry.

I believe the newspaper archives are accessible at Dorset History Centre but I live a long way away and it is 35.00 for a search!

Thank you.

Lanarkshire / Lookup request University of Glasgow Archives
« on: Saturday 30 September 17 17:14 BST (UK)  »
I will just put this one out there in the hope someone who lives locally may be heading to the University of Glasgow Archives at some point down the line for their own research and could kindly spare some time.

I am interested in the student record of my relative a Dr Anthony McCall (born 5th October 1868), who attended as a medical student from session 1884/1885 until his graduation in 1889 and then returned in 1899.

There are some records as confirmed by the free search conducted by the staff but next stage is a hefty 50 plus VAT.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

US Completed Requests / Where did Marguerite McLarty die?
« on: Sunday 27 August 17 23:15 BST (UK)  »
This is one of my most frustrating brick walls that I come back and try and crack every now and again, hoping 2017 is going to be the year (with a little help)!

Marguerite McLarty was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1904 to David & Alma McLarty.
I can pick her up to the 1940 census still living in Milwaukee with just her mother (following divorce of Alma and David years earlier). Marguerites occupation is given as teacher at a public school.

Marguerites father David died in 1951 and in his obituary it stated Marguerite died in 1945.  As she lived in Milwaukee her whole life and didn't seemingly marry it seemed logical to think this was where she had died.  I contacted a local volunteer for Milwaukee through RAOGK who kindly picked up the search for her death and eventually confirmed no death for Marguerite in Milwaukee.

I would appreciate any assistance to confirm death was definitely in 1945, where and then hopefully I could home in on a death notice or obituary.  Marguerites mother did not die until 1968.

Thank you.

United States of America / Ellis Island Query
« on: Monday 07 August 17 15:32 BST (UK)  »
I am currently trying to establish whether some relatives of mine would have passed through Ellis Island on a trip from Scotland to New York in 1922 (enroute to California for a 6 month stay).
The reason being is that they were 1st class passengers and information from the internet says that
First and second-class passengers would disembark, pass through Customs at the piers and were free to enter the United States, while steerage and third class passengers went across to Ellis Island.
However these relatives appear on the Ellis Island Passenger Search website for this trip in 1922, so without sounding too daft must mean that they did have to go through Ellis Island even though they were 1st class passengers. ???
