Monmouthshire / Margaret Jones
« on: Saturday 17 March 18 20:00 GMT (UK)  »
I just wondered if anyone had any information on my gt grandmother Margaret Jones who married my gt grandfather George Rickards. Apparently she was born in Marshfield nr Castleton in Monmouthshire but I can't seem to find any records of her birth. It is possible that she was born Mary Margaret Jones but known as Margaret. She had a brother John Jones. George was previously married to Amy Potter who died in 1850 and he probably married Margaret between 1851 and 1853. I would be grateful if anyone has any information.

Monmouthshire Lookup Requests / Marriage of Mary Rickards and John Jones Marshfield
« on: Thursday 14 April 16 12:12 BST (UK)  »
Looking for the marriage details of my gt aunt Mary Rickards. She was my grandfather's half sister, His name was Artemas Rickards and they were the children of George Rickards of Castleton in the Parish of Marshfield. Mary was married to John Jones and they had a child named Clarence Emlyn in 1878. Try as I might I cannot find any details of a marriage. I believe that they were Baptists and I think that Mary's Mother Amy Potter was the daughter of a Baptist preacher so it is possible that they were married in the Baptist Church in Castleton. Artemas's mother was Margaret Jones and I have a feeling that John may have been her brother because he was living with them in Castleton on one of the censuses and he was a tailor as was my gt grandfather George. However, when I sent for the marriage certificate of George and Margaret it was not the right one and there didn't appear to be another George and Margaret around the right dates. Very odd would be grateful if someone could shed some light.

Glamorganshire / Gowers of Briton Ferry
« on: Sunday 22 February 15 14:31 GMT (UK)  »
My gt gt grandfather was Edward Gower. He married Jane Williams in around 1820. They lived in Trevethin where it appears Edward started as a labourer and eventually became Forge Manager. He moved to Tondu and was the Forge Manager at Tondu Ironworks. Their son Thomas was my gt grandfather. Two of Thomas' brothers owned or were the tenants of the Dock Hotel in Briton Ferry. I think that they were called James and Silas. I would be interested if anyone has any information about this family.

Monmouthshire / George Rickards and Margaret Jones?
« on: Friday 23 August 13 19:49 BST (UK)  »
My gt grandfather George Rickards lived in Castleton ( then in Monmouthshire) from around 1844 and he married twice. He was a tailor and draper and he had his own business in Castleton. His first wife Amy Potter died in childbirth in 1850. He married again in around 1851. My gt grandmother was called Margaret and I duly sent for what I thought was his wedding certificate. However, it was the wrong  certificate.
Margaret was born in the Parish of Marshfield ( Castleton is in this Parish) according to all the census records but I can't find any record of her birth which would have been in around 1830. I am beginning to wonder if Margaret could be her second name which she was known by Any ideas anyone?

Glamorganshire Lookup Requests / Llangynywd Parish records
« on: Thursday 15 August 13 22:04 BST (UK)  »
My gt gt grandfather was called Rees Jones in the family bible, however, apparently his fathers name was Morgan John and they changed the surname to Jones. Rees was born in 1801. Is it possible to find the record of his birth in the Llangynywd Parish records? Also would it be possible to find Morgan John/Jones marriage record. His wife's name was Catherine. Rees was married to Joan Maddocks of Blaenllynfi Farm  and their daughter Catherine was my gt grandmother.

Thank you

Glamorganshire / Welsh miners moving to Pennsylvania.
« on: Tuesday 18 October 11 20:29 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone got any information on the miners from Maesteg and Nantyffyllon who went to America to work in the mines in Pennsylvania in 1923. Would there be any records of the people who went? My grandfather David Davies, who was working in Coegnant colliery in Nantyffyllon was one of the people who went. I believe one of the teenagers who went with his father became quite a famous singer in America. His family never came back, but my grandfather came back in 1939 when the war started.

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Marriage in Bristol 1819
« on: Thursday 01 September 11 20:07 BST (UK)  »
I have been looking for my gt gt grand parents Edward and Jane Gower. I have found them on census records living in Trevethin and Newcastle Parish in Bridgend Glam. Also Jane lived in Briton Ferry in Glamorgan after Edward died. I managed to get Jane's maiden name thanks to Osprey suggesting I send for one of their children's birthcerts. It was Williams. I tried to look for their marriage record but no luck.  Osprey and Hanes Teulu couldn't find in Glamorgan or Monmouthshire. On the census it looks as if Jane was from Breconshire possibly Llangynidr. Edward's place of birth is down as Llangyfelach in Glamorgan. The reason I am on the Gloucestershire site is because when I put Edward Gower into Family search with a date around 1820 it came up with a marriage for an Edward Gower to Jane Williams in Bristol 12/8/1819. The date fits as their son William was born in 1821. Is there anyone who could look up the marrige record to see if there are any clues to this being the marriage of my Edward and Jane. Edward spent most of his life working in Pontnewynydd Forge in the parish of Trevethin in Monmouthshire.  He seems to have gone there as a Labourer and ended up as a forge manager.

Would be very grateful for any information.

Thank you

Breconshire Lookup Requests / Marriage record
« on: Sunday 29 May 11 20:19 BST (UK)  »
I would be grateful if someone could look up a marriage record for Breconshie in 1820. My gt gt grandfather was Edward Gower. According to the various census records for Trevethin that  I have seen he was born in Llangyfelach in about 1794  but I can't find a record of him there, however that is another story. His wife was named Jane and her birth place looked like Llangurid Brecon. I have since found out that Llangurid is in Radnorshire and Jane's birthplace could be Llangynidir ( not sure if that is how you spell it) They were married in Breconshire in 1820. I know quite a bit about their later life but I would be interested to know Jane's maiden name.

Thank you
Mary
