Hello everyone

For many, many years I have been looking - online as I'm not in the UK - for information on the above person or persons, so I really hope someone may be able to help me.
 
Andrew Maitland, a printer of Borthwick’s Close, Edinburgh was the father of :

Catherine Daly Maitland born out of county about 1823, mother’s name unknown ;

Andrew Maitland born 1841, my great grandfather,
Mary Jane Maitland born 1845 probably died before 1851 – no record found,
John Maitland born 1848,

the three children of his mariage in 1841 to Catherine Mcglashan all three born Edinburgh.
Inconveniently, Andrew the printer was not at home when the 1841 census was taken and died before that of 1851.  No record of his death has been found but Catherine née Mcglashan is a widow in 1851.

Catherine Maitland née Mcglashan is at the Borthwick’s Close address in the 1841 census together with Catherine Daly Maitland and Andrew Maitland, aged 69, born out of county who is an « Army P. », which I take to mean Army pensioner.  I have been unable to find any record of a soldier or an Army pensioner named Andrew Maitland and born about 1771.

Andrew Maitland, a printer of Old Assembly Close, married Margaret White in 1835. She may have died in 1836.  This marriage is too late for Margaret to be Catherine Daly’s mother, always supposing the Andrew Maitland is the same one.

I have a lot of information on the children and their descendants and also some on Catherine Mcglashan’s forebears and siblings as well as her second marriage to Hugh Mckay, but would be extremely grateful if anyone could tell me more about either of the two Andrew Maitlands of Borthwick’s Close who I think must be separate individuals unless anyone knows otherwise.

In a register of wills proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, there is a will of 1711 in English and a number of pages later a sentence in Latin regarding the same will.  Can someone tell me what this means, please?  It appears to be some form of judgement validating the will but how would this differ from probate?  Does it imply that the will was contested?

Hello everyone

I am trying to help a correspondent here in France to return the intriguing unopened letter below to the addressee or a descendant of his.  I have been unable to find a John PEEBLES or a family of that name in the residential directories for Southampton on line at the Local and Maritime Digital Archive (I looked at those for 1954, 1960 and 1964) or anywhere else I have searched (the main commercial sites for UK records).  I did find a birth to a John Peebles in Southampton Registration district in 1964, but I obviously can't put any details on here as the lady in question is probably still alive.

If anyone can help or give me suggestions for other lines of research, I'd be most grateful.

I wonder if someone can help me decide which War Diary I should order from TNA in the hope there will be a mention of the action which led to my uncle being awarded an MC in WW 1.  In the London Gazette this is what I have found:
“T./Lt. Arthur Dickinson, 10th Bn., Yorks. R. attd 12/13th Bn., North’d Fus.”
(MC Awards – Supplement to London Gazette – 29 Nov 1919 – 14787)
So should I go for the Yorkshire Regiment or the Northumberland Fusiliers?

Arthur DICKINSON was born in Sheffield on 24 March 1897.  According to my father he lied about his age,  joined the 1st Surrey Rifles and was sent to France early in 1915, which is confirmed by the London Regiment medal roll: "Theatre of war in which served 1(a) 15/03/15 to 29/01/1916". (I presume 1(a) is France.)

I have found him in the medal rolls of the London Regiment (n° 1524) and of the 10th Yorkshire, but I don't think his war record has survived. 

If anyone can suggest other sources of information about his military career, I’d be most grateful.

I am suscribed to a certain number of French Yahoo groups.  I have been reading the messages on the website rather than receiving individual mails.  In view of the changes to these groups, this will not longer be possible in a few days time.  I have therefore been trying to change my settings to receive individual emails, but these modifications are not saved.  i have accessed the site via both Edge and Firefox but to no avail.  Any advice gratefully received.
