Nottinghamshire / John Richards Suicide Nottingham
« on: Tuesday 06 March 18 20:19 GMT (UK)  »
Wondering if a 2nd set of eyes could help.

I have spent several days searching the BNA for a report of a suicide and am struggling.

John Richards born 1863 in Carlton Nottingham.

Committed suicide some time after April 1891 (have him living with his parents on the census) and Feb 1905 when the knowledge of his suicide was used in a court record by the defense to try an plead insanity runs in the family.

There are other suicides in a small area of the branch of the family, all in Nottignham

Thanks

HI

am trying to find the death and burial records for Margaret Regan but known as Minnie. Born on the 24th June 1866 in Draperstown parents James Regan and Nancy Hagan.

Minnie never married and died a spinster, we believe she died around the late 1940's early 1950's and is reportedly buried with her nephew, and a few other family members in Desertmartin.

Despite an extensive search I have been unable to find her death or any burial details to confirm this and wonder if another pair of eyes might see something I have missed.

Many thanks

« on: Tuesday 18 April 17 20:43 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find more details on William Steele born in kilmore nr Saintfield County Down Ireland about 1826.

He was in the 44thfoot number 3134 his fathers name Patrick married Anne Allen in Aug. 1864.

William was a soldier at Colchester Camp as an officers servant and moved to Woolwich Garrison and was also at Aldershot about 1874.

Would like to find his birth/baptism details to find out who his mother was, or more details on his father Patrick, who is listed as deceased in 1864 on William's marriage cert.

Any suggestions, have tried looking everywhere and not finding anything

Leicestershire / William Hutchinson & mother Catherine born in Whitwick, Leicestershire
« on: Saturday 24 September 16 13:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to find the birth of my 3 x Grt Grandfather William Hutchinson he was born approx 1811 in Whitwick Leic. He married Mary Norman in 1832 at All Hallows Church Gedling, Nottingham and remained in Nottinghamshire for the remained of his life with his family.

On the 1851 census William has his widowed mother living with him in Carlton Notts listed as Catherine Hutchinson, birth place also Whitwick, Leic approx dob 1776.

I have searched everywhere for William's birth/baptism on order to try and find his fathers name. I have also looked for marriages in Whitwick for a Hutchinson to a Catherine (assuming his paretns married) but again cant find anything, the only one I found was in 1850 so seems very unlikely.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance

Derbyshire / Jane Musson born 1852 Crich, derbyshire
« on: Sunday 31 July 16 18:42 BST (UK)  »
I have been banging my head for some time with this brickwall, so hoping a someone might have a fresh idea.

My 2 x great grandmother was Jane Musson, according to all census records she was born abt 1852 in Crich, Derbyshire (can also be registered as Belper) She married Arthur Hutchinson 3rd Nov 1872 in Basford, Notts. I have the marriage cert and she states her father is George Musson who works for the Railways (GWR)

There are various tree's on Ancestry that list her parents as William Musson and Grace Thraves, but looking at these further I dont think they are correct, I later find Grace on the 1861 census with her family as head of the family and daughter listed as Mary Jane born in Derby in 1952, living in Lincolnshire.

I have not been able to place Jane Musson on a 1861 census as yet, nor confirm a birth or baptism for her

Every other document I have for Jane Musson she is just Jane not Mary Jane, and living in either Nottingham or Derbyshire.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I'm going round in circles

I have also posted this in the Nottingham forum

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Broadley / Vernon (Fenn) Marriage 1885?
« on: Monday 21 March 16 12:13 GMT (UK)  »
I’m hoping a 2nd pair of eyes might be able help find my Grt Grandparents marriage. I have looked everywhere and for every possible name variation and still can’t find it.

My Gt Grandfather Joseph Wright Broadley born 1856 in Thornhill Bradford. He married Mary Ann Vernon born July 1854 in Glanford Brigg, New Holland Lincs.

Mary Ann Vernon married James Joseph Sheppert Fenn in Dec 1873 in Sculcoates Hull, they had 3 childred together Sophia b. 1874, James b. 1875 & William 1879. James & William appear on later census records but I can find no trace of Sophia as yet so presume she died.

She then went on to marry Joseph Wright Broadley and had a further 4 children with him, one being my Grandad.

On the 1911 census Joseph Wright Broadley and Mary Ann Vernon appear and state that they have been married for 26yrs, had 11 children born, 5 still living and 6 died. I have only accounted for 7 confirmed children including Mary’s children from her 1st marriage.

According to the 1911 census if they were married for 26 years this would make a marriage date approx. 1885, I presume the marriage area was Sculcoates, Hull as this is where the family is centred, although I have searched everywhere throughout the UK and under all name variants and using Mary Ann’s maiden name Vernon and married name Fenn but cannot find any likely marriage.

I am coming to the assumption that they never actually married

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Derry (Londonderry) / Cushly (Cushley) / Costello (Costelleo)
« on: Sunday 24 January 16 19:27 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching my partners line Mullan and am finding these 2 surnames Cushly (Cushley) / Costello (Costelleo) coming up and know they are linked together somehow. From Dreenan, Magherafelt area.

My mother in law has just told me that she thinks that they are the same name / same people which is a possible answer just wondering if anybody else has had knowledge of these surnames being interchangeable.

Here's the details that I have with the different surnames and details:

I have a Catherine Cushly abt 1854 – 1906 marrying Michael Madden 1854 – 1927 on the 1st Jan 1876.

On the marriage cert Catherine is listed as Elizabeth, keep getting a mixture of Cath, Catherine and Elizabeth for her, and Cushly sometimes Cushley.

On the marriage cert she is classified as a widow at the approx of 17yrs old.  Her father is listed as Pat cushley, so assuming her maiden name was Cushley

Cant find any other marriage details for her to make her a widow.

They had 9 children, the youngest being Anthony Hugh Madden born 1896, this is the last record I could find for Michael Madden.

On the 1901 census Catherine Madden is listed as head of the house but married, Michael is no were to be found on any census.

On the 1901 census there is a Mary Costello aged 98yrs as a lodger......... a 98 yr old lodger!!

For their son John I found a baptism record that lists the mother as Catherine Madden Costello.

So what is the connection between Cushly and Costello.

Its to old to be her mother as she is 56 yrs old than Catherine, so possibly a Grandmother.

I’m assuming Cushly is her maiden name as father is listed as Pat Cushly on marriage cert.
Could Costello be her 1st married name but then why would she have her late husband’s family living with her new family.

Michael Madden couldn’t be found on the 1901 or 1911 census.

Catherine Cushly died in the Magherafelt workhouse of Typhoid in 1906.

Michael Maddens death was in 1927, I know its correct as his daughters details are given as present at time of death.

Thanks

Hi

I am trying to find some details of my Great Grandfathers Army service, but I only have a few details that have been given to me by an elderly relative and so far can't find any recorsd or details.

His name was Harry Harvey Turton born in 1886 in Camberwell Surrey. Died 21 Dec 1936 in Battersea, London cause of death thrombosis

I have been told that he served in WW1, he served in the Hampshire area but didn't leave the UK or see active service, he was sometihng to do with working in the 'stores'. He evidently had a problem with his foot so couldn't march properly or able to walk in the trenches. It is thought he could possibly have served in the 19th or 21st London Regiments. These details have been given to me by his Granddaughter who remembers her mother going to the British Legion Christmas dinners because of her fathers service.

Would be very grateful if anybody could suggest where to look to try and locate any details regarding to his time served in the army.

Many thanks

Heather
