Midlothian / CHARLES GABRIEL THOMPSON
« on: Friday 15 December 23 22:33 GMT (UK)  »
Was hoping for some help with another brick wall.

I have Alexander Mouat marrying Phillis Phoebe Thompson on the 23rd of May 1928 in Edinburgh. I have all I need on Alexander however there is a real mystery about Phillis and her parents. I can not find a single trace of them anywhere prior to the wedding.

Her parents were Charles Gabriel Thompson and Mary Thompson ms. Holland. Charles is dead by the time of the wedding and Mary is still alive. But there is nothing of them. No deaths, no marriage, nothing.

Can any of you good people help ?

Antrim / Looking for some Irish expert help- MULLANS of Shankhill
« on: Saturday 16 September 23 18:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

Looking for some help of those of you who are experts in the Irish Records as I'm going round in circles.

I dont have a massive amount of informtion to go on. Alot is only word of mouth via family.

James Mullan born 1904 and died 25th of January 1963. He married a Margaret but I believe she called herself Margaretta/Margarita. Im told her surname was Bennett - Can find a marriage anywhere.

James was born in Antrim and died there too. I found his grave listed on find a grave and then was able to fine it on a Belfast site which showed the lair and listed 2 other people in the lair - I'm assuming it was his parents James Mullan 1883 - 1946 and Jane Mullan 1887 - 1978. Thats is literally all I have - The family were from the Shankill area of Belfast.

James died at home - 61 Beresford Street, Shankhill, Belfast

I'm hoping someone can build on the small amount of information I have and help me grow this branch of my tree.

Bits of family chat which might be a clue but might be worthless.

It's said Margaret Bennett had a sister called Sally (Sarah)
James and Margaret had at least 2 children - Margaretta 1937 - 2016 and James who may have married a Maureen.

Sorry I know this is all very patchy.

Ireland / James PILSWORTH & Margaret MCSORLEY
« on: Saturday 26 November 22 22:12 GMT (UK)  »
Was hoping for a little help

I have a Margaret Pillsworth who died in 1947. She lived in Glasgow and was the wife of James Maver.
On her death certificate and her marriage certificate it states that her father was James Pilsworth, a clergyman and Margaret McSorley.

While Margaret Jnr spelled her surname with 2 L's her parents only used 1.

I cant find any trace of her parents - Margaret was born in Ireland so I am assuming she came to Glasgow around the early 1890's. Did her parents come with here - cant fine any deaths or did they remain in Ireland - Cant find them at all.

I really wish someone could help

Patrick is an Agricultural Labourer

That's it. Nothing else, No idea of kids and no idea of deaths for either - Have pretty much searched all the usual sites with no success.

Lanarkshire / Waterston's or Waterson's of Hamilton, Lanarkshire
« on: Monday 20 December 21 01:20 GMT (UK)  »
Happy Christmas to you all!!

I hope everyone is coping with the current situation.

I was hoping someone might have a little time on their hands to help me out.

I finally 'finished' my family tree and published my 'for fun' website with all my findings however I have a few brick walls I can not get round. I was hoping someone with better detective skills than I could check this out.

1. Alexander Waterston/Waterson. Born circa 1810 in Hamilton, Lanarkshire or Blantyre. His parents William Waterston and Helen McLaughlan (various spellings). Can find nothing about Alexander until he's 27 and marrying Catherine Haddow in Hamilton on the 15th of October 1837 - She looks like she's about 5 years older than him. The have a daughter Jean/Jane born in Union Street, Hamilton in 1839. In 1841 the three of them are living on Union Street. Names spelt incorrectly but I accept that was how it was. Alex is a cotton Loom Weaver to trade.

1843 - Birth of son William in Blantyre
1844 - Birth of daughter Helen/Ellen - I've researched her and asked for help before on here regarding her. She married Thomas Law but had a daughter prior to the marriage called Grace. Sometimes Grace Waterson and sometimes Grace Law - She vanished into thin air - Could find nothing about her ever. She was 8 years old in the 1871 census living at EASTWOOD, Renfewshire, so did she married someone before the 1881 one?
1847 - Birth of son John in Hamilton. His life was grim and he was involved in a murder case in Hamilton - Which turned out to be more gross indifference to a woman's plight rather than murder but it still made the newspapers. he relocated to Edinburgh and started a new life. I have all his info.

In 1851 Catherine is at 15 Lamb Street, Hamilton
Living with daughters Jane, Helen and son's William and John. Presumably separated from her husband. On her death certificate she is listed as a widow however her husband was far from dead. Which further backs up the line of thought that she was living as a widow and in the full knowledge that her husband was else where - Where he was is another brick wall.

In 1861 Catherine is now at 86 Townhead Street, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland
Living with her father who is a widower and her 2 daughters Jean and Mary - No idea why there's a Mary as it was always a Helen - Its the same person so maybe Mary was a middle name?

Jean married Peter Strachan - I've got her history from then on in bolted down.
Helen/Ellen/Mary married Thomas Law - she's bolted down apart from the daughter Grace mystery.
Mother Catherine dies  29th of December 1869 in the Hamilton Sick House.

So what happened to Alexander Waterston after the birth of last child John in 1847 ? There's a massive gap until I found his death on Aug 30 1890 in Kirklands Asylum, Bothwell. Usual Residence Raploch Street, Larkhall a Pauper Lunatic - Formally a hawker of small wares. He's not on any property valuations - he's not on any census that I can fine - Can anyone help ?

His son William - appears in 1861 and is Single.
Occupation Carpenter Crew on board the vessel Impregnable, The census place is Anglesey, an island off the north-west coast of Wales. No idea how he got there.

In 1868 he's listed on UK List of Military Deserters. Desertion Place: Chatham Publication Date: 14 April 1868 Regimental Number: 8822 Military Corps: Royal Engineers
Mar 31 1868 Chatham, Kent

In 1871 1871
Boarder in the Bryden household at 26 Annfield St, High Church, Glasgow.
Occupation Joiner aged 28

On the 21 September 1889 he leaves Scotland - Glasgow, Scotland to New York, USA on board the Bolivia. - The trail goes cold after that - Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance friends

Paul

Lanarkshire / Braidfauld Street, Tollcross, Glasgow
« on: Thursday 11 February 21 14:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All

Looking for a local with some historic knowledge

2 separate relatives of mine in the early 1900's had illegitimate babies. I noticed on both birth certificates that the address was 6 Braidfauld Street - Now neither of these relatives had anything to do with each other (totally different sides of the family) so I guess I'm wondering if this address was some sort of place for unmarried women to go and discretely have children.

Can anyone help?

Thanks Paul

Lanarkshire / A BRICK WALL - LOOKING FOR A DEATH IN SCOTLAND AND A MARRIAGE
« on: Saturday 30 January 21 19:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All

Hope everyone is doing ok.

I' trying to find a death of Mary Burns (maiden name McVarry/McVerry) I believe she died between 1911 and 1933 but I can not find this death anywhere and have tried name variants etc...

I'm also trying to find her daughters marriage - Helen/Ellen Burns married Henry Hughes - cant find a marriage or a death for either of them

Here's what I have :

Bridget Burns lived at 6 Short Row, Coatbridge. It's the Family house. She died in 1933 and her death was registered by Henry Hughes (Brother in law)

1901 Census 6 Short Row, Coatbridge
Patrick Burns 62
Mary Burns (maiden name McVarry) 61 - Born 1840 ?
Bridget Burns 22
Ellen Burns 9 - Born 1894 ?

1911 Census 6 Short Row, Coatbridge
Patrick Burns 72
Mary Burns 62 - Born 1849 ?
Bridget Burns 32
Ellen Burns 18 - Born 1893? Student and teacher in Voluntary School
I think it's important to note on this census that its stated there were 11 children and 3 still survive - The third one being Mary who was married to John McGee in 1892. Mary's marriage certificate states she was living at 37 Merryston Square Coatbridge and John lived at 26 Merryston Square, Coatbridge - So they were neighbours. Witnesses were Thomas McGhee and Maria ?, Neither Bridget or Ellen are witnesses.

Bridget is living at 6 Short Row in 1920 according to the Valuation Rolls

No clue as to when Ellen Burns married Henry Hughes

Bridget dies at 9 Park Place, Carnbroe on 26th May 1933 and Henry Hughes signs the certificate as her brother-in-law (His address 9 Park Place, Carnbroe )

So Bridget was living with her sister and brother in law in 1933.

Henry  appears on the Valuation Rolls in 1935 still living at 9 Park Place, Carnbroe

Antrim / HEANEY/HENEY/HEANY OF BALLYMACREVEN
« on: Sunday 08 November 20 14:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All

Needing some expert help please as this brick wall is driving me insane.

My Heaney's can be traced back to 1851 at Number 12 Ballymacrevan Townland.

William Heaney, Head, M, 49, Linen Weaver, County Antrim,
Ally (Alice) Heaney, Wife, M, 50, Spinner, County Antrim,
Margaret Heaney, Daughter, U, 23, Linen Weaver, County Antrim,
Rose Heaney, Daughter, U, 21, Linen Weaver, County Antrim,
Hugh Heaney, Son, U, 19, Linen Weaver, County Antrim,
Jane Heaney, Daughter, U, 16, Linen Weaver, County Antrim,
William Heaney, Son, U, 12, None, County Antrim,
Ally Heaney, Daughter, U, 8, None, County Antrim,
Elizabeth Johnston, Unspecified Kin, U, 38, None, County Antrim,

William and Ally are my ancestors via son Hugh Heaney.

I've had help previously on rootschat so to avoid any duplication and wasting any time I'll list what is now know to be fact. I don't need any information on Hugh after he married Martha Peacock - Anything before the marriage would be welcomed

Hugh Heaney born @1831 is my ancestor he married Martha Peacock Rasharkin RC Church Ballymoney, Co. Antrim. Heaney written as Heney October 1849 . I have tried so many times to trace a birth or death for Hugh but nothing conclusive. I've almost given up on ever finding the man .
His parent were William and Alice Heaney and he had sisters Margaret, Rose, Ally, Jane and brothers William, Henry. - I know nothing about any of them. Except from the family listing in the 1851 Irish Census
I know that Hugh's father William's father was called Henry - but nothing else and I know that his wife Ally's parents were Johnstons - No first names or details I'm afraid.

Also on the 1851 Cesus therea re a few other Heaneys living in the village in houses nearby but I've been unable to connect them

13 Ballymacrevan Townland
Henry Heaney, Head, U, 57, Farmer, County Antrim,
Ann Heaney, Sister, U, 61, Spinner, County Antrim,
Mary Heaney, Sister, U, 46, Spinner, County Antrim,

I think these might be Williams siblings

and

9 Ballymacrevan Townland
James Devlin, Head, M, 26, Weaver, County Antrim,
Mary Heaney, Servant, U, 25, Housekeeper, County Antrim,
Mary Heaney, Neice, U, 10m, None, County Antrim,

No idea how they fit in or how Mary heaney could be James Devlins Neice

Finally.....

8 Ballymacrevan Townland
William Keyland, Head, M, 40, Farmer, County Antrim,
Elizabeth Keyland, Wife, M, 36, None, County Antrim,
Daniel Keyland, Brother, U, 50, Farmer, County Antrim,
Ann Keyland, Daughter, U, 8, None, County Antrim,
Elizabeth Keyland, Daughter, U, 6, None, County Antrim,
John Kelly, Servant, U, 30, Ploughman, County Antrim,
Mary Tipping, Servant, U, 26, House Servant, County Antrim,
John Heaney, Servant, U, 14, Cow Boy, County Antrim,

Again no idea how this John Heaney could be related but It feels like he must be.

Can anyone help me trace Hugh's brothers and sisters - The children of William and Alice?

Thanks

Paul

Lanarkshire / HELP NEEDED WATERSTON/MCLAUGHLAN - HAMILTON LANARKSHIRE
« on: Sunday 24 May 20 20:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

Hope everyone is keeping safe during the current circumstances we find ourselves in.

I've received alot of help on here in the past and was looking for some more.

I finally found the death certificate for my Alexander Waterson 1810 - 1890

Death Certificate confirms Catherine Haddow as his wife - I believe they had been separated for quite some time (did people do that back in those days ?)

Anyway - His parents are confirmed however I have searched Findmypast, ancestry, scotlands people and familysearch to no avail. Nothing on this couple at all. They were all cotton loom weavers. They were in Hamilton/Blantyre/Bothwell in the late 1800's

How am I going to find Helen and William - or do I just need to accept the records dont exst?

Thanks in advance if anyone has time to help

P
