Canada Lookup Request / Gertrude McAuley
« on: Sunday 29 January 23 20:45 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for help in finding a little more about Gertrude (maiden name Wills) in Sault Ste. Marie; Gertrude married Jeremiah McAuley in 1909 in Sault and she died in Sault 1 July 1936.

The spelling of the surname leaves a lot to be desired but I was hoping there may be an obituary online which hopefully mentions her son John as he was the informant on the death certificate and also a daughter Ethel who married Leslie Wilkins. I have the cemetery she was buried at as Tarentorus Cem. but I am really not sure where to find her burial record either or if she was buried with Jeremiah.

Many thanks for any help as always

Somerset / Wills family
« on: Saturday 03 September 22 20:11 BST (UK)  »
Have discovered my Wills family come from Somerset and unfortunately I don't know the area and I would very much appreciate your help.

From my cousins dna match, have found my family in Devon and quite by chance from a newspaper report, could confirm my gggreatgrandfather was still alive and had also remarried. Samuel ( a master cooper) was the son of John Wills (farmer) and according to the 1851 census in Devon, is born in 'Barrick', Somerset.

Looking for a baptism for Samuel c1788, I think I have the right family

John Wills and Ann

baptisms
John 1778 East Coker
William and Thomas 1781 East Coker
Henrietta 1783 East Coker
Harriet 1785 Barwick
Samuel 1788 Barwick
Charles born 1792 bap. 1806 East Coker

These names are repeated through the next few generations and looking at census returns, Charles (born 'Berwick') and Henrietta (born Coker) are in Bradford Abbas 1841/1851 along with a record for a Harriet Wills death 1821 and for a John Wills 1819 age 63.

It's been a little difficult searching for Wills as a family name, also Wells/Willis/Will and wondered if families moved alot within Devon/Somerset/Dorset, Samuel's first marriage was in Tiverton, Devon 1809.

Have I found the right Wills family in Somerset?

Thank you as always

Leicestershire / Ashby-de-la-Zouch workhouse records CD
« on: Sunday 21 August 22 20:16 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone used CD3 when visiting the records office?

Leicestershire Workhouses Indexes to Admission and Discharge Records 1836-1912

The reason I ask is because I am looking for an Ethel May Wills born in London 1905 who has a note on her workhouse records which just says

Passed, Ashby-de-la-Zouche message per 'phone 5th July 1911

Have then found her I believe as adopted daughter 1921 (Coalville) and 1939 confirms her date of birth. She was with her foster mother in London and her mother was originally from Ashby; in 1911 her mother was in Canada.

If anyone has had look at the disc, does it include this type of admission taking into account her age or is it local admissions only

Thank you as always

The Common Room / Solved one mystery but who is her mother?
« on: Sunday 14 August 22 20:38 BST (UK)  »
After many years of searching for my grandad's mother Gertude Wills, I now know a bit more after my cousin took a DNA test and bingo we have Gertrude Elizabeth Wills born 10 July 1871 in Ashby-de-la-Zouch to John Wills, cabinet maker and Mary Ann Rigg.

I found John and Mary Ann 1871 in Ashby

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VFTX-G7D

There is a burial for Mary Wills 5 Nov 1873 and then John marries  Mary Jane Leat back in Devon 18 Dec 1874. He then returns to Ashby

1881 John and Mary Jane

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q27J-39WH

and Gertude is with the family here then 1891 Lancs, 1901 London, 1911 Canada.

I am over the moon at finding Gertrude but I have absolutely no idea about her mother; I cannot find a baptism for Gertrude but can for all her half siblings including one in Devon; when John marries Mary Jane Leat, he is as batchelor.

All I know is

Mary Ann Rigg c 1843 born Castle Douglas

is her mother and I haven't a clue who she is as my searches have drawn a blank in the UK.

Meanwhile in Canada, Gertrude names Mary Leat as her mother.

Any help in the search for Mary Ann Rigg would be most welcome

Canada / Gertude Wills and Jeremiah McAuley/McAnley
« on: Tuesday 02 August 22 20:48 BST (UK)  »
I have been looking for Gertrude for many years and from a DNA match, I think I have found her in Canada,

She marries Jeremiah McAuley 21 Jul 1909 in Algoma, parents details are spot, have them on  the Canadian census 1911, 1921, but spelling is all over the place in the family and census information I have found

McAuley/Mccauley/Mcnally/Mckauley/Mcanley

The death certificate for Gertrude

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JKN6-ML5

is transcribed as Mcanley, her son John born 1910, signs the certificate and it looks like Mc Anley, would love your help on what their actual surname is and is John's address to do with the railway?

Thank you

Nottinghamshire / D. H. Lawrence and Mr. Akers
« on: Saturday 01 May 21 16:03 BST (UK)  »
Hubby came back with photos this morning after a trip to the cattle market and the crate he paid for is full of family history for the Akers family and his photos over time of D H Lawrence memorabilia. A postcard in there dated 1974 thanks Mr. Akers for the newsletter, so before I dive in to find out more, does anyone here have more knowledge about the group or Mr Akers who lived in Eastwood ?

Have googled but wanted to ask here first while I look.

Some of the photos are stamped with local history library P. L Nottingham so I would love to find out more, the family I can research as they kindly took a photo of the Akers grave which has the maiden name of their mother!

Thanks

United States of America / Arthur John and William James Moore
« on: Thursday 21 November 19 11:54 GMT (UK)  »
Quite a few members of my family went from Leicester To USA because of the shoe trade. I want to look at the my 'elastic web weavers' and the shoe trade but need to double check the boys as these 2 went to Connecticut rather than Brockton like other family.

I have basically tracked them both and can say William went to Connecticut and then Massachusettes, marrying Elizabeth Ann Smith in Manhatten 23 Oct 1882. Elizabeth was also from Leicester and they come home on several visits, William dying 18 Jun 1939 I believe, but I can't access the obit in the Boston newspaper 20 Jun 1939.

Arthur, if I am right, goes to Connecticut and stays there, travelling on the Aurania 25 Oct 1886 and is living in Fairport, 1900 with Lena

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M9QF-DM9

I can't find any details for the first marriage but the second one is ref.

ARTHUR   MOORE   FLORENCE   TAYLOR   1904-07-16   BRIDGEPORT

This lady would appear to Florence Brobson who is also from Leicester.

I can find background information for William but not Arthur; the boys parents were James Moore and Lucy Hurst.

Could anyone help with Lena with the hope of finding a marriage and a record of Arthur's parents. I have all the census returns from Leicester and US,

Many thanks
