World War One / Alfred Stanley Wilkins 1893 to 1957
« on: Saturday 05 October 19 17:35 BST (UK)  »
I would like to know which regiment he was in in WWI. His birth reg. was Chepstow 11 a 12 340. Apr to Jun Qtr 1894. I don't have his actual date of birth.

On the 1911 Census for Lydney, Glos. he appears aged 17 with father Robert etc. He married into my family 29th May 1920 Holy Trinity, Bath. His wife, from my family was resident in Lydney and they lived there for many years. Her until 1995!

I would be very grateful if someone can identify his regiment. Most likely Gloucestershire Regiment, but one never knows.

Armed Forces / Royal Navy Ensign
« on: Monday 17 December 18 10:20 GMT (UK)  »
I was under the impression that the current RN ensign only dates from 1861 and yet many images/films about the Napoleonic wars show the modern ensign. Some of the paintings appear to be old.

I thought that the Navy was in three squadrons, the red, the white and the blue. Admirals were assigned to one of these, Nelson was apparently a Vice Admiral of the White. Not sure the Trafalgar ships had union on white backgrounds.

The three squadrons equated to fleets, one in the North Sea, the Channel Squadron and the Mediterranean.

Can some Rootschatter elucidate the matter. Thank you.

This is Miss May Hawthorn, fiancee of Captain CG Grail, 7/N. Staffs. Regt. 1890 to 1915, KIA at Gallipoli.

I've never seen an apparent photograph with a black surround on a hat before. Was this common?

England / 1939 Index Frank and Lottie Griffiths.
« on: Tuesday 16 October 18 16:20 BST (UK)  »
Could some kind Rootschatter find these people in 1939 Index (I don't have access). Frank Griffiths born 1877 and Lottie Wilks born 1891. They married in 1919. They were from Forest of Dean. Frank was one of nine, 8 brothers and one sister, including my grandfather. The family today know of all of them except Frank. He seems to have disappeared off the radar in the early 1920's. At the time he was a colliery contractor.

I've put this in England General but they could have moved to Wales or anywhere else in UK. Thank you.

England / John and Hannah Griffiths 1700 to 1780
« on: Sunday 16 September 18 14:14 BST (UK)  »
Although I have started this off in England, it also involves Wales. I have tried before and received a lot of high quality advice. However I think it is time to start afresh as I have new information.

John Griffiths was born in Llandogo 1702, lived in Mitcheltroy, Mon., died there, but was buried at Llandogo, 1749. His wife, Hannah died 1780 and was buried in Mitcheltroy.

They had 3 children, Michael 1741 to 1800, Thomas 1743 to 1804 and Tassee (Tacey) 1747 to 1827. Michael buried Monmouth, Thomas buried Llandogo and Tacey buried Whitchurch, Herefordshire.

A cousin employed a genealogist to take my researches back further but was constrained by the first PR's for Llandogo being 1695.

What I would like to know is Hannah's maiden name ie marriage to John and her bapt. date.

On an earlier Thread the trail seemed to lead to Worcester, although that was apparently disproved. Attached is a doc. from Familysearch input by 3 members years ago.

Following on the Cabinet card a C de V of probable later date. Mother Sarah Jane was wearing a dress similar to but not the same as in the Cabinet. All the decorative detail was different. The best clue is probably Kate's skirt suit. I have never seen such before. Note the large false skirt pocket. In both pics. Kate appears to be corsetted.
