Offaly (Kings) / John Whelan born 1827, Rathvilla
« on: Saturday 21 October 17 11:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I have an Irish ancestor of my wife. - 2nd great grandfather - who has been a long term "brick wall" in my research.

He is shown on later UK and India records as John Whelan born c1827 in Rathvilla, Co Offaly, Ireland.  I have no parentage or siblings for him.  I did find a record for his marriage  to Frances BEEBY of Castle Donington at Naas, Co Kildare, in 1858.  By this time John WHELAN is in the 5th Royal Irish Dragoons and is stationed at the Curragh, Co Kildare, not far from Naas.  John died in army service, out in India, in 1868.

I would love to find any family for John WHELAN - parents and other ancestors, and also any siblings.

Hoping someone may be able to help with advice or information.

Regards,
Garry

Hi folks,
stuck on a set of 3rd great-grandparents....   William PORTER shown born about 1776 in Bradwell, Cheshire - christened 28th Jan 1776 in Sandbach.

Married "Ellen" about 1797, not know where or what age Ellen was.  But children were all later born in Moore, Daresbury & Over Walton.

Trying to find this marriage and so define Ellen and her parents (hopefully).

Any leads welcomed.  Thanks in anticipation....

Staffordshire / Mary Breeze (1783) - parentage??
« on: Sunday 24 May 09 14:29 BST (UK)  »
Hi folks,
a few months ago I manged to unravel the history of my 3rd great-grandmother, a complicated affair.

I found she was born Mary BREEZE about 1783 in Staffordshire.  She first married John PRICE 27th September 1901 Wolstanton, Staffordshire (parish register).  John died about 1815 and she married my 3rd great-grandfather Thomas HABBERLEY 17th July 1818 Wolstanton, Staffordshire (parish register).

So far, I have been unable to find any parentage or siblings for Mary BREEZE.  I wonder if anyone has BREEZE family from around this period in the Wolstanton district?  Could you check please to see?

Just for info, Mary's grave still exists at Goldenhill.  She died 9th July 1843 but Thomas went on to marry again.  All three are shown on the tomb-stone at the front of Goldenhill Church.

Any help - as ever - appreciated very much!!

Cheshire / WARBURTON family in APPLETON (circa 1830)
« on: Sunday 22 March 09 15:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,
I have a brick-wall growing seemingly higher by the day.  I have a 3rd great-grandfather born in 1826 in Appleton, Cheshire  (though the 1851 census says Stockton Heath....).  His father is known to be James WARBURTON, a Brewer, according to his marriage cert in 1851 (Thomas WARBURTON to Mary FORSYTH in 1851 in Kirkdale, Liverpool).

I have not been able to find James WARBURTON anywhere, well I don't have a DOB for him so that's hard!  And Thomas appears to be aged 15 and already working away from home in 1841, a farm servant to Peter LAWTON at Witherning Farm, Appleton.

I'd love to be able to put definite parents and possible siblings for my James WARBURTON (1826) and so get back at least another generation.  Can anyone find this family in any records??  I did find a possible brother in a  John WARBURTON born 1831 Appleton - but no proof to connect them.

Cheers,
Garry

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Marriage and deaths - Goldenhill (Tunstall district)
« on: Thursday 04 September 08 12:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,
would anyone be able to check out a marriage and a death for me please?

One of my second great-grandmothers was called Mary, born in Staffordshire about 1783.  She married an "Unknown" PRICE, sometime around the 1798 - 1811 period - I have one recorded son in Samson PRICE who was born about 1813 in Staffordshire.  I am looking to find this marriage and find out her maiden name.  I am 60% sure its in the old Tunstall parish area into which Goldenhill falls.

Mary's husband died sometime between 1812 and 1818.  I know this as she married my 2nd great grandfather Thomas HABBERLEY in Tunstall Parish in 1818, she being a widow and he a bachelor and blacksmith.  They lived in Goldenhill.  I'd like to find a verify that death if possible.  But this is not as urgent as finding the marriage!!

Any help, or advice, that anyone could offer would be very much appreciated...

Cheers,
Garry

Armed Forces / Ancestors in India
« on: Saturday 15 March 08 09:22 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
researching my wife's ancestors shows that her 2nd great-grandmother was Mary Ann WHELAN born 21.4.1860 in Barracks at Aldershot to John Whelan (1827 Rathvilla, County Offally, Ireland) and Frances (or Fanny) BEEBY (13.5.1839 Castle Donington, Leicestershire).  They can be seen there in 1861 - 5th Royal Irish Dragoons (Lancers) & East Calvary (sic) Barracks, Aldershot, Hants.

First mystery is I cannot find a marriage for John Whelan and Frances (or Fanny) BEEBY.  It's probably in the UK, but not certain.  Any suggestions?

From the regimental history I know that in 1863 the new regiments first overseas posting saw them leave Portsmouth harbour for Cawnpore Station in India where they remained for the next 10 years.

Whilst in India:

1. One or two more children (at least) were born - Ellen E Whelan (1863 Lucknow, India) is a "possible" and Sarah J Whelan (1868 Lucknow, India) is a definate.  Trying to find proof of these births....
2. John WHELAN must have died (about 1868) - trying to find death record.....
3. His widow Frances (Fanny) WHELAN then married Joseph DONALD (1839 Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire) in India, circa 1870 - he was a Troop Sergeant Major, Denbighshire Yeomanry.  Trying to find marriage record.....
4. At least one child Joseph DONALD was born in India, in 1871.  Trying to find birth record.....
5.  The daughter Mary Ann WHELAN met Francis William (Frank) HAWKINS (wife's great-grandparents) out in India - I cannot find a marriage (circa 1884) for this couple, so again I think it was in India...... (note, they settled in Stinchcombe, Gloucestershire from 1885 onwards where their children were all born).

Joseph & Fanny Donald then settled in Wrexham, Denbighshire, where they can be seen in 1881 and 1891 with their children plus step-daughter Sarah J WHELAN.  Joseph is still with the army, it appears he died at St Asaph in 1892.  Fanny and some of her children then appear at St Helen's in 1901.

Sorry it's such a saga but I do not know how to get Indian records which would be great to prove the relationships and births, and any help and pointers would be really appreciated.  I only found the Joseph & Fanny Donald story last night with a bit of lateral searching on Ancestry.com!!

Many thanks,
Garry
