The Common Room / London FHC at TNA Closing on 23 March 19
« on: Monday 25 February 19 12:45 GMT (UK)  »
Received an email from FamilySearch stating the above

Says that due to advances in technology, services can be offered more flexibly. Records can be accessed online at a local Family History Centre or FamilySearch Affiliate Library.

TNA is becoming a FamilySearch Affiliate Library so that the only noticeable change is that there'll no longer be volunteers onsite to help and advise.

To use the services, you'll need a FamilySearch account but that has been the case for about a year now so shouldn't be an issue

London & Middlesex Resources / London City Directories 1736-1943 on Ancestry

19 million records apparently.

Reckon it must have been transcribed by OCR as I checked someone I've previously checked through the years on the films at LMA and had about a 1/3 success rate

So, potentially excellent resource but will need to be creative in the search criteria

Morning all

My 5GGrandfather is baptised here  in 1767 as seen in the NonConformist register deposited in the National Archives (RG4/4068 also available online) with first entry in 1762

However, it seems that the chapel was built in 1739

If I wanted to see the BMD records created between 1739 and 1762, does anyone know which is the more likely response

a/ Ah yes, you'll find them in xyz
b/ Duh, there weren't any baptisms etc carried out there during that time
c/ Tough luck, matey. If they ever existed, they're gone now. You'll have to find other ways to get further back

If c/, can anyone offer a good starting point?

Thanks!

Armed Forces / Crimea/ Scutari
« on: Sunday 05 November 17 21:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I've been ploughing through the Muster rolls of the 23rd Regiment of Foot for Shadrach / Shedarick Rook and at some point in 1855 his pay gets taken over by the Depot at Scutari for a few months.
Any idea why?

This seemed to correspond with a promotion to Corporal, later downgraded to Private.

My boy had a number of imprisonments.  Would these be under Court Martial? Are there records for these?

Lastly he got transferred to the 69th in about 1856. Before I look at those records,  do you know where were they roughly for the next 5 years?

I've almost given up reading Ancestry emails, not being interested in DNA, but this was welcome

We've also extended our Non-conformist Registers by a whole decade [to 1931].

The Common Room / "Who Do You Think You Are", Series 14: #3 Claire Balding
« on: Friday 21 July 17 08:22 BST (UK)  »
Right, let's start this off

Well, I expect not many of us had much in common with that programme - the Kingsclere roadsign was my only connection - and I thought that the first half was just in there to link it to the BBC Gay Britannia season but I enjoyed the American side of it, most particularly the slightly crazy Food Historian woman

Did think it could probably have been discovered with about 5 minutes of Googling though
