The Lighter Side / Don't give up !
« on: Monday 14 September 20 18:38 BST (UK)  »
Today I've broken down a brickwall which has stood firm for 20 years. It seemed that everything fell into place after finding one tiny piece of information , I feel ridiculously pleased . So don't give up , you never know what's around the corner .  ;D

« on: Monday 05 November 18 11:26 GMT (UK)  »
Please could anyone advise me on how long I should expect to wait to hear back from an email order sent to groonlinepayments. I haven't ordered any Irish records for years so don't know what to expect.

Technical Help / Talktalk
« on: Thursday 11 October 18 12:00 BST (UK)  »
Are any Talktalk users having trouble accessing their website at the moment ? I keep getting err_connection_reset or ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE when I try. I've followed various instructions for fixing these errors without success and I've tried 3 different browsers. It's happening on both of our laptops and the ipad and only happening on this one website.

I'm hoping it may be a general problem with Talktalk - I dread having to ring them  ???

Is anyone else having trouble with FindMyPast today ? I'm either getting "oops we are unable to get results "
or "error 404 page not found" depending on which browser I use.

Technical Help / FTM 2017 free upgrade download problem
« on: Thursday 20 July 17 14:58 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone tried to download the FTM 2017 upgrade files via the email link ? I've been trying for a couple of hours without success. With IE 11 I get a "download was interrupted " message and when I resume it just stops  again. I reset my default browser to Chrome and more or less the same thing happened , except that it says " time remaining to download 1 day". I've emailed Support and had an automated reply saying it may take a week for them to respond and suggesting I try LiveChat , where I found I was 32 in the queue.  My internet connection is fine and my security software is not blocking the download.

Is it just me or are others struggling ?

How to Use RootsChat (Please don't post requests here) / 1911 census guidance
« on: Tuesday 28 March 17 18:47 BST (UK)  »
Please could someone give a little guidance regarding the 1911 census. I have assumed that if someone already has a subscription and gives details of a record which they have viewed  it is then ok to help with queries and deciphering of words within the record in question.  Another member has suggested to me that that is not the case.

I don't want to blunder on regardless so would welcome advice.

The Common Room / Who Do You Think You Are magazine
« on: Tuesday 15 November 16 15:29 GMT (UK)  »
I just found out that the publishers have imposed a 70% subscription price increase and , in some cases , have collected the new price by direct  debit without prior notification. I have cancelled my subscription . Anyone else with a sub might like to keep an eye on the price !

Sussex / Sussex Family History Group
« on: Thursday 11 February 16 09:25 GMT (UK)  »
I'm finding that I can no longer access the SFHG website using the login details which were working until a few days ago. I have emailed them but have only had a brief acknowledgement in reply. I'm thinking that they may have changed the username and password but I've not had notification.

Has anyone else had a problem ?

Canada / Fry(e) family, Havant to Canada to Boston, Mass.
« on: Wednesday 15 April 15 21:45 BST (UK)  »
Edward Fry(e) b 1817 Iwerne Courtnay , Dorset and his wife Mary Ann Hillier b 1818 Bursledon , Hants were Governor and Matron of Havant Union Workhouse in 1851. Their daughter , Helena Augusta , was born and died in 1855 and that is the last record of the family in England. They moved to Canada with daughter , Fanny M ,  b 1848 , and son , Edward H , b 1849. Their sons , Thomas G Fry , abt 1859 , and Walter R , abt 1861, were born in Canada before the family appears on the Massachusetts State Census of 1865. I have the deaths of Edward senior , Mary Ann , Fanny and Walter ( who committed suicide ) and I have traced Thomas forward to his marriage etc. I have not been able to find any record of the family in Canada and would be interested to know if anyone can spot them , perhaps on the census before they moved to Boston ?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Christine

Sorry - have also traced Edward H forward - don't want to waste anyone's time !
