Australia / Geelong gaol
« on: Monday 10 October 16 00:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I believe an ancestor of mine had a short spell in the Geelong Gaol. He was charged with vagrancy. I have not been able to find any documents related to this. I know he was there because I found newspaper articles. Are there records from 1892 Geelong Gaol available? If so how do I go about finding them?

Family History Beginners Board / Is he a convict?
« on: Thursday 25 August 16 03:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I have suspicions an ancestor is a convict, but apart from having the same name, no documents to "prove" the convict and person are the same. I found an article in Trove that related to Municipal Court in the Bendigo area. Would Public Records have anything from that day in court, that would mention if he was transported to Australia? He was a free man at the time and was not convicted of anything.
He got married after he was free, so no permission to marry documents. He was married in South Australia and the info from SA web site, has very little on the marriage.

 ;D

Australia / Convict Brereton help.
« on: Monday 13 June 16 09:26 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I have found a convict who I think might be in inlaws tree. His name is David Brereton. He was transported on the Rodney in 1851 with his brother James. I'd like to know who he married to see if he is the same David, in my relatives tree.

Thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help with Certificate
« on: Tuesday 16 February 16 02:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I can read the certificate, but the vital information for John William Blom is hard to figure out. I'm not sure of his birth place and parent names. Specifically, the first name of the father and the maiden name of the mother.

Australia / Swedish Rellies
« on: Monday 18 August 14 08:06 BST (UK)  »
How do you search for ancestors that come from Sweden? I have thought to try and look into it, but multiple people have searched for the same person on ancestry.com and the only good lead we have is the info on the Australian wedding cert. Should I just leave it at that? If it was easy then others would have figured it out. ??? I have looked at a number of sites and if they change their names when they emigrate, then how do you identify them?

Australia / Inquest Records for Victoria Australia
« on: Monday 18 August 14 07:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I have a rellie that was committed to Kew asylum. I think. His death cert is marked as unknown in all the good places. I have looked in the Victorian Public Records online with the hope of viewing the document that had him committed, but  I don't understand how to request the right file, as the search options are asking for the file number. ??? What are the procedures for finding the right file? I have sent off an email asking for help, but no reply as yet. His name was John William Blom and his death cert has William Blom, but he was from Sweden, so its likely he changed his first name as well as not using John as a first name. ???
