Yorkshire (West Riding) / Thomas GREENWOOD Halifax?
« on: Thursday 17 February 22 22:43 GMT (UK)  »
I thought I had this person sorted out and was just filling in gaps in my records, so ordered his marriage certificate from the Victoria Australia BDM.
Thomas GREENWOOD, Age 31, widower since November 1855, with one dead child, from Halifax Yorkshire, Father James GREENWOOD, manufacturer. mother Sarah WINDELL. Married Elizabeth Hawkins on 29 Nov 1859 in Victoria Australia.

I have/ his birth as 27 Aug 1828 in Stanfield apparently correct mother and father except this bloke is a weaver, various records seem to confirm this, until I found when rechecking the records the same family and Thomas turn up in the 1861 census. This correct in every way family is incorrect as he was busy having children and discovering gold mines in Victoria in 1861

I am looking for details of Thomas' first marriage that ended in Nov 1855. My thinking possibly wife and child died in child birth. From that I hope to be able to track down his correct birth/baptism.
Thanks for any help, I am from Australia and struggle with UK records.

Australia / James Joseph RYNN death
« on: Wednesday 01 July 20 02:00 BST (UK)  »
James Joseph RYNN married Margaret BUCKLEY nee Rourke in Port Elizabeth South Africa 16 Apr 1906. They had one son James Vincent RYNN 24 Jun 1907 in South Africa.
In 1909 they are living at 174 St Georges Rd Northcote Victoria.
3 Jul 1919 he was in St Vincents Hospital and made his Will on his death bed, (will and probate on PROV) he died that day from Spanish Flu. (family story).
We are looking for a starting point for this fellow, even though he died in hospital there is no death record at BDM. I have tried using Digger with wildcards, tried different spellings but nothing. Ancestry does show a death index but it doesn't give a record number. We can't find a Marriage certificate in South Africa.
No death notice in the papers that we can see, There are a couple of funeral notices in Saturday 5 Jul Argus and Age, not much information, one of them is from the Irish National Foresters so from that we can probably assume he's Irish and proud of it.
Any help tracking this bloke appreciated.

Australia / Mary Sullivan, where did she go?
« on: Saturday 27 June 20 03:46 BST (UK)  »
In 1862 Mary SULLIVAN born 1842 in Tipperary Ireland married David William FINDLAY born 1826 Scotland. Married in Ballarat.
They had a tribe of children mainly around Ballarat, Mary, Margaret, David, Thomas, Euphemia, Francis.
Frederick, David and Charles were born in Echuca.

David FINDLAY remarried in 1891 to Catherine Mary HICKEY.

Where did Mary go? A half dozen trees in ancestry have her death as 1891 in Ballarat, there is no evidence that I can see for this apart from the fact that David remarries in 1891.
Ballarat Cemetery records don't show her, BDM records don't show her, no probate.
The only thing I can think of is a divorce and remarry but I can't find any evidence of that either. Nothing in Trove as far as I can see.

Caernarvonshire / Jane Jones, Bangor
« on: Friday 22 May 20 08:50 BST (UK)  »
First up, Sorry if this is in the wrong section I am in Australia so not at all familiar with Welsh geography or genealogy.

I am helping my niece trace her Great great grandparents, we have the wedding certificate of Ah Khan Woll a native of China to JANE JONES in Victoria Australia. JANE was born 9 Oct 1828 in Bangor Wales, on the certificate it says she was previously married and her husband died in September 1854. It doesn't give her husbands name or her previous married name. Her Father was WILLIAM JONES and her mother LYDIA JONES, maiden name Roberts. (Probably, the writing is not really clear)

She possibly came to Australia on "Herald of the Morning" as an assisted immigrant in 1859, to work as a laundress at a large wealthy property.

Any information about JANES previous marriage. Did her previous husband die? Did she have any children in that marriage.
The fact that she mentions she was previously married but used her maiden name on the certificate is unusual for Victoria. It was not unusual for people to come to Australia to disappear.

I have a thread in the Australia board that has a copy of the marriage certificate posted on page 3.
Heading Ah Khan Woll.

Thanks in anticipation.

Australia / Ah Khan Woll.
« on: Friday 15 May 20 02:18 BST (UK)  »
I am doing some research for my niece whose Great Great grandfather is AH KHAN WOLL I have found his marriage to Jane Jones 1860, birth of their first son WILLIAM WOLL (or Wall) in Ashby (Geelong) in 1861, I can't find a birth record for their second son JAMES born 1862 who is my nieces Great Grandfather,  though I have discovered admission records for both boys who were institutionalised for neglect, on those records Jame's birth date and place of birth is Scarsedale.

Jane is buried in Scarsedale cemetery died 1894.

Ah Khan Woll is also known as Chan Woll on William's birth cert, also known as Ah Can Woll in a heap of Victoria Police gazettes from early 1870s to 1879 under "Statement of arrears due". By 1879 this amount had risen to 53 pounds, a huge debt for that time.
What is this Arrears Due, is it spouse maintenance or some other debt?
After those police gazette records Ah Khan vanishes, any help appreciated.

James seems to have taken on the surname Wall either in the institution or soon after.

Apart from William's birth and institutionalisation he is a mystery. Help appreciated here too.

Australia / William Haliburton BELL death
« on: Thursday 11 January 18 10:17 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for a death for William Haliburton BELL born 22 Aug 1836 in Forfarshire Scotland,
Mother Jane HALIBURTON, Father John BELL. William was  a ropemaker

I am also after the death of his wife Ann DALY married 12 Feb 1871 at the RC church Hawthorn (Melbourne) born (possibly) Co Kerry Ireland, her father, Patrick DALY, mother Ellen FOSTER. Anne was a servant. I have their marriage cert.

Children, Eleanor 1872-1872, Mary Ann 1874- 1960, Ellen 1875-1875, John Patrick 1876- 1943, William 1880-1953

I am reasonably confidant with the Births of William and Ann and their marriage and their children, but the deaths are eluding me.

The whole extended family seems to have lived and died in Richmond (Melb) but William and Anne just vanish after the last of their kids is born. William seems to have dropped the Haliburton second name which makes it very difficult.

The Common Room / Help identifying old metal satchell/box/ who knows
« on: Thursday 09 February 17 04:14 GMT (UK)  »
This belonged to my wifes GG Grandfather.
Inside the lid in black lead pencil is
Mich J Rourke Kilkenny
born 29 Sept 1833

What is it?
It probably had a locking mechanism or something for a padlock on the lid. No belt loops or shoulder strap anchor points, so it must have been meant to go in a saddlebag.

He was in the Army, service number15 87th Regt Royal Irish Fusiliers from 1857? to Apr 1861
Then 59th foot 2nd Nottinghamshire at Cape Town.
Also policeman at Cape town
Letter carrier for the Post Office
Cape Volunteer Rifles.
It looks like he ran the canteen for the Vol Rifles, certainly a hotel in Caledon St Capetown called "The Volunteer"

My thoughts are that it isn't military, if you were going to write your name in military article you would put your unit not your birthday?

Australia / Birth of LAWRENCE GORDON AGNEW
« on: Monday 17 October 16 00:45 BST (UK)  »
I have two sources that say he was born in Melbourne on 12 Mar 1916
Death cert says parents unknown. Birth date 12 Mar 1916.
WW2 Military records give same date and place, next of kin Ethel Williams.
He married Alma Alice Scott in about 1949
Died in 1977 in Ballarat
Ethel Williams was Alma's brother's (Stanlet Albert Scott) wifes (Gwendoline Clayton Williams) sister.
What I am trying to track down is what the relationship really is with Ethel, so I figured his birth would be a good place to start. I can't find anything in Digger or BDM Vic.

All these people are dead.

Australia / Location of Hard Hills near Buninyong.
« on: Saturday 31 October 15 03:17 GMT (UK)  »
I am after the location of "Hard Hills" near Buninyong Vic. looking at various descriptions of the mining happening there, I have come to the conclusion it is possibly between Buninyong and "Black Lead" or "Cambrian Hill", most of the mining reports seem to include talk of Black Lead and the Leigh River.
This is not the same place as "Little Hard Hills" which is a bit further away and would not be described as near Buninyong.
I am reasonably familiar with the Geography of the area but this is a new one.
