Derbyshire / Census Records : Sarah Ann Middleton born 1854
« on: Tuesday 09 January 24 17:40 GMT (UK)  »
Sarah Ann Middleton was born on 27 July 1854 in Grindleford Bridge, Derbyshire to parents Zachariah Middleton (born 1821) and Mary b. 1822 (nee Bowering) who married in 1841 in Eyam, Derbyshire.    Sarah married William Laynes (b.1848) in 1877 in Rotherham.

I'm looking for Sarah's census records for 1861 and 1871 before her marriage in 1877.

Family records  support Zachariah (spelling varies) parents were Robert Middleton and Ann Morton who married in 1796 through to the Middleton family who occupied  Leam Halll, Eyam, Derbyshire in the 16/1700.

Grateful for help.

Nottinghamshire / Thomas Alcock m Elizabeth Wilcock - Marriage Year
« on: Tuesday 15 August 23 16:59 BST (UK)  »
1851 census records the following family living in Mansfield.    Thomas Alcock b.1807, Long Benton, Gloucester, Elizabeth Alcock (nee Wilcock) b.1812 in Nottinghamshire and the following children born in Mansfield: Harriet 1833, Lucy 1842, Gera 1847 (I think this is a transcription error for Elizabeth or Eliza) and Joseph 1850.

I've had no luck finding the marriage of Thomas and Elizabeth and would be grateful for help.   The age gap between Harriet (18) and Lucy (9) is as recorded but raises question of parents' marriage.

Canada / William Ferriday EVANS - born 1844
« on: Wednesday 02 August 23 16:24 BST (UK)  »
William Ferriday Evans was born in Liverpool, England in 1844.   His occupation was 'coach-builder' and he married Eliza Alcock in Liverpool in 1868.  I've traced his family history to the 1891 census but he cannot be found in 1901 or 1911.

I recently found some family notes which say William speculated his money and lost (in England?) and went to live in Canada, adding he had something to do with buying land for the Canadian Pacific Railway.  The Klondike Gold Rush  started while he was there and (notes say) he joined the madness and finally died there frozen to death outside his cabin.   If true, how this information was relayed back to his family in Liverpool is unknown.

I realise this is a very long shot but I wonder if this story can be added to?   Is there any record of William's life in Canada?    Grateful for help.

Gloucestershire / 1911 Census - Frederick Charles Saxty
« on: Thursday 27 July 23 14:34 BST (UK)  »
Frederick Charles Saxty was born in 1883 in Cheltenham, Gloucester.    He was the son of Charles Frederick Saxty b.1848 in Gloucester and Catherine Saxty b. 1855 in Gloucester.   Frederick can be found in the 1891 and 1901 Census still resident  in Gloucester.

I can't find Frederick in the 1911 Census, in particular his address, which may have been in Battersea.   In 1911 he was unmarried, some 3 or 4 years later he left for America.

Grateful for help in finding Frederick in 1911.   In other family records I've found the surname with  spelling variations such as  - Saxby, Saxtey

United States of America / Richard Roberts m An Barker 1847
« on: Saturday 15 July 23 17:52 BST (UK)  »
I'm researching a Roberts family which commenced in Sheffield, Yorkshire in the 1790s

Richard Roberts born c.1791 married Hannah Lockett born circa 1793 in 1819 in Sheffield and they had six children.  Hannah died circa 1837.   Moving on.........

Family records say Richard married Ann Barker  on 30 September 1847 in Scott, Illinois, United States.  Also, that  Richard died circa 1874 but just where is unknown.

Grateful for any records for Richard and Ann and anything about Richards' passage to America.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Marriage in Sheffield? - Marrison/Salmon ?
« on: Wednesday 05 July 23 17:48 BST (UK)  »
Free BMD records the birth of Charles Herbert Marrison in Jun Q 1857: Sheffield 9c/284 mmn Salmon.

Family gossip handed down the years mentions John Marrison born c.1798 who married 'Alice' and they had a son Charles Herbert.   Alice's surname is unknown and I've had no success in finding a marriage record for a Marrison/Salmon.  Perhaps there was no marriage?

Family folklore also adds that John Marrison had a previous marriage in the 1820's to a lady also named Alice (surname unknown)  with children including Thomas, Richard Martha, Elizabeth born in the 1830s.

Grateful for some help in putting some flesh on the bones from these basic facts.

1911 Census records William Edward Pointer age 42 (c.1869) together with his wife Fanny Matilda aged 37 and their children living at 17 North  Street, Southampton.   William's occupation is recorded as a Licenced Victualler.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Charles Frederick Smith born c. 1874 Hampshire
« on: Friday 05 May 23 17:36 BST (UK)  »
Charles Frederick Smith m Mary Rachel Pointer, 1902 in Southampton (JunQ 2C/28). Mary's full name is Mary Ann Hannah Rachel Pointer.   A son, Edward Charles Smith, was born in 1907 (South Stoneham 2C/74).   Charles, senior,  died in 1908 aged 34 (born about 1874).

The marriage in 1902 and death in 1908 is betweeen census records.

Having already found more about Mary I now want to find the parents and earlier history of Charles' family.   A certificate for the  Charles/Mary marriage would hopefully show the father of Charles but am I missing another way?

Grateful for help, please

Somerset / PICTURES OF CHILDRENS' HOMES
« on: Saturday 01 April 23 16:37 BST (UK)  »
Resident in the 1939 Register, I have an address for two distant relatives who were then living in children's' homes.

1.   Three Ways Cottages Children's Home, Frome, Somerset

2.   St Elizabeth's Home, Redcatch Road, Bristol

Using Google I've had little luck with the history of these two homes.   In particular and ideally, a picture.

Grateful for help
