Armed Forces / Understanding/reading Training shorthand on Service Record
« on: Sunday 06 February 22 16:16 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help me to read some of (my father) Edward Collins' Record of Service papers please? Having been a Bevin Boy, my Dad transferred to the Army (RAC, 3rd Kin's own Hussars) February 1947 to train as a Wireless Operator. There would appear to be a note of training but a lot isn't clearly written and/or I don't understand the abbreviations: "attended course MEW/011 (?) 4/w 175 (?) 17/3/47-10/5/47 at M.E.RAC (?) 5wk (wk or sch ?) class Ce III op. (?) Ynp.C.A (?) - 522/47 M.E.L.F."
(M.E.L.F. Middle East Land force is the only bit I get!)

there is also this which I don't understand
e17313 A.F.W.(Army Field Workshops?) 5169-EMBARKED DRAFT MELF.
SERIAL DKAAL. Date 15/2/47

I'd be grateful for any help,
Thanks

Ireland / Is it the baptism of Jane or John Ennis?
« on: Tuesday 12 January 21 13:01 GMT (UK)  »
I am confused – how can I work out whether Jane or John is correct/most likely for this baptism?

Ancestry has a register (St Andrew’s church is in Westland Road)

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageviewer/collections/6068/images/41885_b154581-00456?treeid=&personid=&hintid=&usePUB=true&usePUBJs=true&_ga=2.11226228.1381905130.1610222558-35260650.1605297595&pId=208975

With the same entries in different handwriting it is a different register, except this time it is Jane – not John, but all other details seem the same!

Thanks for reading and hope someone has an idea?

World War One / Army Service Corps

Can anyone help with when/where my Grandad may have enlisted?

His name is Martin Collins
He was born in Loughrea, Co. Galway in 1895 and family rumour has it he signed up to get free passage to England and that he was in his teens.

I have so far found his RASC Roll of Individuals entitled to the Victory and British war Medals (page 6166)
It shows him as a Driver and his RASC No as T4/088619
while his 2/8 London Regt. Rifle. Bde. No as B/201877
& notes
RASC 9.1.16-25.9.17
2/8 London Regt. Rifle Brigade. 26.9.17 - 22.11.18
Retransferred RASC 23.11.18

written beneath that in red ink is something I can't read plus RASC/101B61

I can find no information about where and when he actually enlisted. Nor where and when he was demobbed

Any ideas would be welcomed please
Thank you

World War One / Help re Martin Collins
« on: Friday 22 June 18 22:49 BST (UK)  »
My father Edward Collins dies 4 days ago. I  would like to include information about his father, Martin Collins, at the funeral service.
Martin Collins was born 14 November 1895 in Ballinlough, Galway, Ireland, on a small farm called Abbey
He died Dec 1975 in Hendon, England.
He left the family farm in his early/mid teens as it could not support all the family and its 14 children.
He married my Grandmother Vesta Vick in Q1 1920.
Family memory says when he reached the mainland he enlisted (probably lying about his age) and that because he had come from a farming background they set him to work with the horses. The farm had been arable but he learnt fairly quickly.

I can't find any reference to a time in the services.
Can anyone help?

Many thanks

Galway / Pre 1820 records in Ballinakill / Woodford area
« on: Tuesday 24 October 17 17:11 BST (UK)  »
Evening
I have traced my Fathers line to Michael Collins B between about 1813-1818
He seems to be married to Honor (Norry) Halloran and I now have various records of quite a few children.
All seems to be based in the Ballinakill parish.

In this parish records for Baptism didn't start until 1839 and for marriage in 1854.
I'm therefore stumped for going back any further, unless anyone has any suggestions or ideas to help.

Many thanks

Galway / Patrick Collins
« on: Sunday 23 April 17 13:26 BST (UK)  »
I have found Census for both 1901 and 1911 for Patrick and Jane Collins and family in Ballynakill, Galway.  There only seem to be 10 homes in this Townland.  There are similarities, in that the wife's name is the same and 4 children's names of the correct age are on both.
There are differences though as well.
In 1901 Patrick can read and write and signed the form (the signature handwriting style is similar to the Enumerators), he is 30 and Jane is from Co. Galway and is 28
In 1911 Patrick can only read and make his mark which is witnessed (by a different Enumerator to 1901) he is 46 and Jane is from Co Meath and is 40
I have my Patrick as being born on 25 April 1861 (in Derrybrien, Galway, Ireland) so maybe neither is right?
Any thoughts?
Many thanks

London and Middlesex / Random household member Charles Hall
« on: Monday 13 February 17 14:27 GMT (UK)  »
I can't understand where Charles Hall, referred to as a son aged 19, fits into the household of Alexander (54) and Elizabeth (44) Cameron and their 5 children (20, 7, 14, 10 & 6) in the St Pancras 1861 Census.
Any ideas?

Family History Beginners Board / Whines and Shevatt
« on: Sunday 29 January 17 22:50 GMT (UK)  »
I'm very much a beginner and struggling again
I have bought my Gt Grandfather's marriage cert. and have some confirmed information but I'm struggling to get further
Gt Grandfather Robert C A Whines (23) married Ellen Shevatt (24) in Islington on 3/10/1891 her father William Shevatt (builders labourer) was deceased & her address was 28 Sutterton St, Islington
1911 Census shows Ellen Shevatt (B: abt 1842) living with brother James Murphy (B: bat 1831) and Robert & Ellen Whines and children still at 28 Sutterton St.

I can't find a reference to William Shevatt and Ellen's marriage, or be sure of any census information on the family in-between

Can anyone help me stop going round in circles please!?

Janice
