I haven't used FTM2019 for several  months, and it won't log me on to Ancestry. If I use user name and password, it just hangs. I tried logging on via Google and got a message saying that I wasn't using a secure browser. I've tried both Edge and Chrome, both listed as secure. As recommended, I've also checked that Javascript is enabled. I'm wondering if its trying to sign me in to ancestry.com rather than ancestry.co.uk, as when I went into Google sign-up, ancestry.com was shown as the website. After several hours of messing about,  I'm at a total loss as to where to go from here! As far as I know, I've successfully downloaded the update to the program.

Family Tree Maker 2019 is available as download-only, DVD or USB. My laptop doesn’t have a DVD, so that’s out. The USB version costs £25 more than download-only, if you count the postage in the price. If I get just the download, what happens if I replace or have to wipe my laptop at some point? Would I be able to download it again without too much hassle or any extra payment?

World War Two / Which beach did my Dad land on?
« on: Saturday 14 April 18 10:34 BST (UK)  »
I’m going to Normandy this summer and would love to know which beach my Dad landed on in 1944. I don’t have a lot of information, but even to narrow it down to a few possibilities would be wonderful. He told me that he went in 5 days after D-Day. He was in the Royal Signals. Name: Charles Francis Brien. Army no. 3536965. Rank: SIGM. He joined the Manchester Regiment in February 1942 and the Royal Signals on 17th April 1942.

As I say, even to know that some beaches are possibles and others not would help.

Europe / Belgian records 1880s to 1900s
« on: Tuesday 31 May 16 11:27 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to trace Frank Horace Jacobs, born London 1872. He also appears in the records as just Frank or Horace, and occasionally as Jacob. According to his school yearbook, he went to the Antwerp Commercial University in 1887. I've been unable to find him in the 1891 British census and for 1901 have only a possible match - a Frank Jacobs visiting London from Belgium. The age isn't quite right and his place of birth is given as Belgium, though it also says that he is a British subject. So this may or may not be my Frank, who was back in England by Sep 1901, when he got married.
Does anyone have access to census or other Belgian records between 1887-1901 that might help me fill in the gaps, please?

Help! I had several family trees on FTM but have lost all the files after a computer catastrophe. My laptop now has a new hard drive and I've put FTM back on there. But when I go to download my  trees from Ancestry, the table that appears says for each of them "not linked to this machine" and "no action available". It is, of course, the same machine, but presumably is being identified as a different one because of all the changes made. I find all the "help" on both Ancestry and FTM very confusing: can anyone explain to me how I can get my trees from Ancestry back onto FTM?

I've been looking for service records for the above. I've found the records for his death and the fact that he's listed on the war memorial at Thiepval, but I can't find his name in enlistment or service records. I'm new to military records - should I be expecting to find him in the indexes on Ancestry and Find my Past? Thankyou.

I'm trying to trace William Brundish (or Brandish) who, according to his army records, was born 19th November 1794. He usually gave his place of birth as Fressingfield, but Harleston, nearby but in Norfolk,  is also mentioned. As I've outlined in a previous post, I've found a William Brundish in Fressingfield, but christened in June 1791.
He may have a brother James, as a James Brundish was in the same battalion. The Fressingfield William does indeed have a brother James, christened in 1790.
I've not found any other candidates in Suffolk, and it's tempting to assume that this is "my" William, but why the discrepancy in birth date? Three years is a considerable difference!
So if anyone is able to check the Harleston records for me, I'd be grateful, as it'll be a while before I can get back to East Anglia.
(I did find some Harleston records in the Suffolk record office, but as there's another Harleston, near Bury St Edmunds, I'm not sure if they were the right ones).

Family History Programs, Tree Organisation, Presentation / Changing father's name
« on: Sunday 11 October 15 18:21 BST (UK)  »
In Family Tree Maker 2014 I have Mary Hilton with two sons, Thomas and James, shown as having the same father, William Cliffe. I've now discovered that Thomas's father was a Richard Worthington. I've entered him as a second "spouse" for Mary, but how do I move Thomas from William to Richard? Thankyou.

Lancashire / Hulme Hall, Manchester
« on: Sunday 11 October 15 17:50 BST (UK)  »
Apparently Hulme Hall in Manchester was demolished in 1840. I have an ancestor born in 1838 for which it's given as his abode. Would that be the hall itself, or could it refer more generally at that date to the surrounding area?
