Perthshire / Robertsons in Kirkmichael, Perthshire
« on: Saturday 09 April 16 23:55 BST (UK)  »
Looking for help in researching Duncan Robertson, born about 1803 in Kirkmichael, Perthshire, according to 1841, 1861 and 1871 census. I have been unable to locate his death certificate on SP.  I have been trying to go back a generation on this Robertson line, and have hit a brick wall.
Duncan Robertson and his spouse Betty Stewart and their 6 known children lived in the Strathardle area of Perthshire , settling in “Persie”  by 1861. Researching other  Robertsons in the area who may have been related has been difficult as the records seem to be dispersed among three different administrative units - Kirkmichael parish, Perthshire, Alyth, Angus, and Persie, Perthshire.
Known records:
Baptism of children of Duncan Robertson and Betty Stewart from Kirkmichael Parish Records, 1825-1838.

Death record: not found. Tried Persie post 1871 on SP.

His son James Cameron Robertson became a stone mason. May be related to a Charles Robertson, mason from Strathardle area.

Thanks all.

Midlothian / Royston Dairy
« on: Saturday 05 March 16 23:22 GMT (UK)  »
Archibald McKelvie was a grocer and dairyman who lived at Royston Cottage, Cramond 1881, 1891, and Royston Cottage, Gorgie Road, Edinburgh 1901. Would I be right in thinking the dairy was situated near to  Caroline Park in the area between Cramond and Granton?

Argyllshire / Excise Officer, Lismore and Kilchoman
« on: Wednesday 11 November 15 17:57 GMT (UK)  »
In 1838 an ancestor, Thomas Duffus,  was appointed to the Board of Excise and was first appointed to Paisley, Renfrewshire. From 1841, he was serving  as an Officer of the Revenue at Port Appin, and ten years later, was in Port Charlotte. Would he have been collecting taxes from the distilleries on Islay or would he have been investigating illegal stills, (or a bit of both?) He seems to have left Islay prior to 1854, for his next posting in Linlithgow, where his occupation was given as Supervisor of Inland Revenue, (Excise Branch).

Scotland / Cadzian name, Scotland
« on: Friday 06 November 15 21:01 GMT (UK)  »
I have traced my Edinburgh Cadzian ancestors back two centuries to the marriage record of a couple known as Symon Cadyen and Katherine McArthur 18 May 1771, Kilmadock, Perthshire. The name dates back to at least the 16th century in Perthshire and Stirlingshire.
The reason I am posting this information is that it has taken many years of research to uncover the family links from Perthshire to Edinburgh over a span of two centuries, and I have information to share with others researching this family.
The name Cadzian has evolved due to transcription and spelling errors in written records resulting in  weird (occasionally atrocious) variations of the Cadzian name or indeed, the beginning of "new" names, but the name Cadzian has basically endured over time. The "Z" is pronounced as "YE" (Scottish yoch)  as in the surname Menzies, and transcription clerks  unfamiliar with the accent of family  informants or the spelling of the Cadzian name, often did not accurately record the Cadzian name properly  - often  writing the name as they heard it.
This list of spelling variations of the Cadzian name refers to Cadzians from Perthshire, Clackmannanshire, Fife and Edinburgh, Midlothian:
CAYDZIEN
CAYDZIAN
CADZIEN
CADZIAN
CADZEAN
CADZEON
CADGZIN
CADZEN
CADGEN
CADGEAN
CADGIN
CADGIEN
CADGON
CUDGEAN
CADDEN
CADEEN
CADDER

If anyone is researching this family name, I will be happy to share information I have,

Midlothian / John Thomson, Musselburgh
« on: Friday 09 October 15 23:57 BST (UK)  »
Researching Thomson families in Musselburgh and Inveresk,I am interested in information about Thomsons who were shoemakers.

Mary Thomson, daughter of John Thomson, shoemaker of Musselburgh, married John Craigie in 1792.
(09/01/1792 CRAIGIE JAMES MARY THOMSON/FR2196 (FR2196) M EDINBURGH EDINBURGH CITY CITY/MIDLOTHIAN 685/01 0520 0110 Craigie, James, gentleman's servant in College Kirk p. Mary, in Lady Yester's p., d. of John Thomson, shoemaker in Musselburgh 9 Jan. 1792)

Mention of a John Thomson, shoemaker, 1736
Commissariot of Edinburgh; Consistorial Processes and Decreets, 1658-1800.
No 302  1736  Robert Ramsay and James Chrichton , masons in fisherow, against John Thomson, shoemaker in bridgend in Musselburgh.

Can anyone suggest where additional information about this  Thomson family from Musselburgh may be found?
Mary Thomson who married John Craigie is NOT the Mary Thomson b 16 April 1769 to John Thomson and Mary Logie in Inveresk - this is a different Thomson family.

Occupation Interests / Druggist and Chemist
« on: Wednesday 30 September 15 20:52 BST (UK)  »
I have two or three family members whose occupation was termed either "druggist" or "chemist" or "druggist and chemist".

James Rae emigrated from Scotland to America sometime in the 1850s, and was variously termed  a "druggist" and  "druggist and chemist", age 24, (working with an uncle, also a "druggist and chemist")  in  Stirling,Scotland, 1851, and as a "druggist", age 34  in  Shelby Co Tennessee, 1860, and a "druggist". "chemist" and "druggist and chemist" from 1863 in New York.

Robert  Duffus was termed a "druggist and shopman"at Portobello, Duddingston, Midlothian, Scotland in the 1861 census, at aged 36.

Was the term druggist interchangeable with chemist from 1840s to 1870s in Scotland and in America? Were these family members following a professional trade in which they needed to pass examinations, or were they in trade without any kind of license, trying to serve customers who could not afford to pay for a doctor to attend to them?

Aberdeenshire / Succoth or Sucoll, The Cabrach, Aberdeenshire
« on: Sunday 13 September 15 23:49 BST (UK)  »
According to an 1851 census return, an ancestor, Mary Stewart nee Bain, was born c 1775 out of the county  in a place called Succoth, Aberdeenshire. I downloaded the original census material from SP and the name is definitely Succoth. Would I be right in thinking this is in the lower Cabrach area, south of the river Deveron - near Glen Glass?
