Australia / Thomas Davis - Born 1880
« on: Wednesday 09 January 19 08:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I am helping a friend with her family history. My experience is mainly with my U.K.forebears.
However this fellow seems to have gone AWOL, and we would like to tie up loose ends by finding a death registration for him.
He was born Thomas Davis in 1880 in Riverton, Invercargill area New Zealand. He was born of English migrant parents, and lived most of his traceable life in Australia, mostly in Victoria.
His parents were John Bloor Davis, and Emma Beech, both born Stoke upon Trent ,Staffordshire. England.
Thomas and family lived in Victoria from 1881, spending some time in NSW and Brisbane, briefly.
He married Florence May Sievers in 1900, deserted her and had 2 children by Christina Isabella Woods in NSW. After divorcing Florence, he married Christina in Melbourne in 1913.
Thomas served in WW1 and apparently formed another attachment in the U.K. while having medical treatment or having officer training. The young ladies sister wrote on her behalf trying to establish his whereabouts after her letters were returned. The letter is in his war record documents.
After living with his wife Christina for several years on his return, they appear to have separated, and he drops off the scene. Family rumours have him moving back to NZ to get away from his wife.
However he left NZ at age 1, and I haven't found any ties there.
Sorry this is so long winded, but I am hoping to find a death registration to answer my friends question of whatever happened to her great grandfather?
I will be grateful for any help or advice on where to look next? Thanks in advance, Eileen

Northumberland / West Engines, Longbenton parish 1774
« on: Sunday 16 September 18 07:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
I have found a burial for a  Mary, wife of George Boggon in the Bishops transcripts for Longbenton (shown Long Benton) in 1774.
We are originally from the Newcastle area so was surprised that We did not recognise "West Engines", altough it was 1774!
Has anyone come across this location before? Just curiosity.
Thanks in advance,
Eileen

Armed Forces / 1915 photo. What is he wearing?
« on: Saturday 04 August 18 09:36 BST (UK)  »
This fellow is my gr Grandad. I have found records that I am convinced belong to him in the Durham Artillery 1896 to 1901 (including a possible AWOL in 1900). He was discharged totally unfit in June 1901.
Then I find him in the Northumberland Artillery 1902 till 1908.
This picture was taken from a family photo. From the number and ages of children, it would be about 1915. He would be 40 then, and a bit old for WW1?
However there are family stories that he wore a fez and said he could  because he fought in Africa.
Was he a dreamer, or could there be any truth in the tales. Can anyone see enough of his uniform to identify it?
His name is John Scullion, born Ormesby Yorkshire 1871, grew married and died (in 1938) in Gateshead. Can’t find any other military records than the ones I mentioned. Any ideas ?
Many thanks, Eileen

Hello all.
I am hoping for help to locate William Common prior to the 1881 census, where he lives in Picton Terrace Newcastle. He is a 27 yr old Glass Maker and gives his birthplace as Sunderland Durham. He is married to Jane Ann (was Wilson), and has 3 children. The eldest Anne is to become my gr grandmother.
I did find the record for his marriage to Jane Ann Wilson in the July to September quarter of 1876.

I have found subsequent records for them in the following years census until his death, which would appear to be  Gateshead, March 1917 where he was given as age 63.
I have been unable to find him in the census records for 1861 or 1871.

William was born in Sunderland, but married in Newcastle, and there on the 1881 and 1901 census.
But, he did spend time in Sunderland too! His daughter Mary was born there in 1878, son John Henzell born Newcastle 1881 yet died in Sunderland the following year, and they were living there during the 1891 census.
There is another family in the Sunderland area (possibly related) John and Catherine Common with a son Wlliam around the same age, which does cause confusion.
William lived his final years and died as a widower in Gateshead, Durham in 1917.
I am hoping someone will be able to help me to find William prior to his marriage, so I can identify his parents and follow his line back.
All help gratefully received.

Barbary  Tait (nee Mason) born about 1804 in Bamburgh, (or Ancroft /Belford )

I have been searching for this lady for a couple of years.
What I know is that she is living at Brock Mill a couple of miles from Kyloe in Northumberland in the 1841 census with her husband Thomas and children :
William, Thomas, Eleanor, John , Robert, & Luke.
Born later are Mary and Barbary.
I can follow them in later census, but am struggling to find birth or marriage records for them.
I have tried various methods but can't pin them down.
I have tried to tie her to the Masons next door on the census, but so far not successful.
The Tait children were all baptised at the Lowick Presbyterian Church.
I would appreciate any ideas on how to proceed from here please?
( I have discussed this in another Mason thread, briefly, but it was becoming too confusing to separate them!).
Thank you for any ideas.

Berwickshire / Catharine Hay - Born Coldstream? about 1802-1806. Cant find her family.
« on: Thursday 02 October 14 07:35 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I have been looking for a record of the birth of Catharine to identify her family, and take our family tree up a notch.
She was married to John Moody by the 1841 census, and I found the birth & baptism of their eldest child, Francis in the non-conformist registers, Roman Catholic section in Berwick Upon Tweed. Francis was born in january 1827 and the registration shows Thrumble Hill, presumably their place of residence.
Her husband John was baptised at the Roman Catholic chapel at Haggerston Castle in Northumberland as were later children.
My problem is that Catharine shows her place of birth as Coldstream and Scotland on the 1851 and 1861 census, and Bowsden, Northumberland on the 1871 and 1881.
I am thinking she may have been born in Coldstream and they did spend many years in the Bowsden, Kyloe, Fenwick areas, very near Haggerston Castle.
Her age also varies, placing her birth between 1802 and 1806.
She was buried at Ford Cemetery, Lancashire 16th April 1881 where her age was given as 78.

I would be grateful for any help searching for Catharine's origins. Not sure where to look now.
Many thanks,
Eileen
