COUNTY DOWN ASSIZES
Party Work-Cause and Cross Cause
Henry MAGILL, Andrew MAGILL, and James MILLIKEN, were indicted for a Riot
and Assault at Derrymeale, on the 24th July 1823, upon John WHARRERY, Nicholas
MAGUIRE, James HAROLD, Hugh MORGAN, William FORSYTHE, and Hugh BURNS; and
the latter parties were also indicted for a Riot and Assault at the same time and place.
Several witnesses were examined. It was stated by one Witness, James BELL,
"there were five attacks and repulses; the battle lasted an hour and three
quarters; the battle was about Religion and Party business."
The Learned Judge charged the Jury in a luminous and impartial manner,
reprobating, in strong terms, the disgraceful fact, which was admitted on
all hands, that a large band of Orangemen should be suffered to parade at a
funeral, and with guns, and headed by fifes and drums, and all the material
of Civil War.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / DNA studies
« on: Tuesday 14 February 06 13:03 GMT (UK)  »
Anyone out there joined any DNA study groups?
What is your experience?

I am about to join a Milliken family DNA group (but it only has 13 members so far) and will back report with the results in a month or so (I guess).  I believe this sort of thing could be a very useful tool in "absolutely" linking oneself into a particular branch of a family rather than wasting time chasing links to families which eventually prove to be unsubstantiated :-[

Of course it may also show that my origins may not be "pure" Milliken after all ;D my mother or someone in the past may have been a naughty boy or girl!

Down / Millikens of Ravara
« on: Monday 13 February 06 13:46 GMT (UK)  »
Have been on the site for a few months now (Belfast) and have realised I haven't registered that I am also looking at the Millikens form Ravara (between Saintfield and Ballygowan) and Holywood.

In particular I am looking for David Milliken born mid 1860's who moved away from the area.

His parents were William James Milliken (b1824) and Sarah Wright (b 1833).

Williams parent were James Milliken (b 1788) married to Anne S Shepherd b 1797)

James had two brothers William and Robert.  His father was also James (d 1814).  Montioned in the rent role of Blackwood Estate in 1741.  His brother was Robert.

Any ideas out there.

My Great Grandfather David (born 1860's) eventually opened a barbers shop in St Peter Hill area by 1912 (signed Ulster Covenent).  Then moved to Howe Street.
His son was John Milliken (MC).
Anyone out there know about Millikens?  I have lots of other bits and bobs and some nice photos of this family.
