Armed Forces / Colour of Royal Marine uniform
« on: Thursday 29 September 16 12:08 BST (UK) »
I am going to have this photograph of my grandfather, William Canacott, restored and hand coloured. Before I do this, I want to be sure of the actual colours of his uniform. He was in the Royal Marine Light Infantry. The photo was taken in 1901, when he was a Sergeant on board HMS Crescent in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I believe the uniform to be navy blue, and the sash probably crimson, but I'd like confirmation of this. Is the piping white or gold? Is the collar navy blue or a different colour. Are the sergeant's stripes gold, and is there a background colour for these?
I have been unable to establish this to my satisfaction, from images on the internet, and hope that someone with knowledge of naval uniforms can help me with this.
