My 3g grandfather William Merchant 1851 census record says that his place of birth was Hadleigh, Suffolk.

I cannot find any verification of this and don't know where to look. I am unable to travel to Suffolk unfortunately.

I have heard( not verified) that his mother was Dinah Marchant, Daughter of Richard Marchant and Dinah (Bloss) Marchant  born 1853 in Bildeston, who later  in 1771 married Abraham Daking in Semer.

My thanks in advance to anyone who can throw any light on this history.

Peter Merchant
PS It would be nice if one could do a search on Rootschat just on the forum that one is currently looking at, but with a name like Merchant I am getting search results from all over the country, all sorts of records.

Suffolk / Help with Marchant/Merchant family rumour c1771
« on: Sunday 22 April 18 18:21 BST (UK)  »
I have been told, but am unable to verify, that my 3g grandfather, William Marchant, was born c1771 to Dinah Marchant, daughter of Richard and Dinah (Bloss) Marchant. This was in Hadleigh, going by later census declarations.

The rumour has it that the father was a John Steventon.

I cannot find any records of this.

Can anyone help with this.
Thanks,

I have a postcard addressed to my Grandfather at this address in July 1914. Does anybody know  what sort of treatment he would have been having there. He was a shipping clerk at Port of London Tilbury Docks at the time and nearly 30.

Thanks for any information.

Technical Help / Refining search to Family name
« on: Sunday 24 January 16 13:31 GMT (UK)  »
How do I refine the search facility to search for my family name? My Name is 'Merchant' and when I search for that I find a very large number of 'Merchant seaman' and other similar occupations and comments. I am sure that this happens to other names too.

Thanks,

My Grandfather's brother Eleazar White Married Louisa Hardman in 1917. My wife's family are Hardman's.

Can Anyone help me find out who Louisa HArdman's parents were. My best guess at the moment is Wilfred and Edith Emily Hardman.

I have two Louisa Hardmans, one born 1890 and the other born 1896. The Bury one  would live closer to the white family from Ramsbottom.

Thanks,

Hi, I am stumped trying to find this lady who is my G-G-grandmother. The 1851 census  notes that she was born in Layer de la Haye and is 30 years old, But her 1838 marriage certificate has her as a 'minor'. I have a large spreadsheet of the Curtis's of Aberton/Langenhoe/Layer de la Haye and a few other places, but the only Sarah that I can find was born and died in 1814. The Marriage certificate says her father was William.

I have spent quite a bit of time in SEAX with no luck, and FamilySearch.org says that there is one born 1817, but I can't find her.

Any Hints on how I proceed?
Thanks,
