Durham / B.F. Johnson - Consett
« on: Wednesday 13 March 24 15:34 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone please help with information on this man who was an innkeeper in Consett/Berry Edge at a mystery pub named Tattersalls Inn which was a fully licenced hotel not just a beerhouse.  He and the pub had several mentions in the press around 1860-1864 and he had a couple of mentions in Sporting Life as a promoter of events like horse racing and pigeon shooting but there is very little else on him in public or private life and he does not seem to appear on the 1861 Census so I have no idea of the address of the pub even though he lived on the premises.  I'm guessing that the pub changed its name at some point as few pubs in Consett ceased to exist around that time.  Many thanks in advance of any help.

Durham / John Stokoe, Tanfield Village
« on: Thursday 07 March 24 16:14 GMT (UK)  »
I know I am clutching at straws here but can anyone please help with absolutely any information on John Stokoe who was described as a "brewer, vintner and innholder" lately of Tanfield in the County of Durham and who was issued with a bankruptcy notice (The London Gazette Publication date: 7th September 1742 Issue 8152 Page 7).  I have not been able to find any trace of him in the village.
Tanfield is a very small village and the only pubs that were definitely there at the time were the Peacock and the Pack Horse.  However, there is reputed to have been an unnamed pub with a brew house in the grounds of Tanfield Hall before 1800 so that is another possibility.  Many thanks

Durham / Catherine Petch (nee Stevens) Blackhouse/Edmondsley
« on: Monday 05 February 24 14:12 GMT (UK)  »
Can anybody please help demolish a brick wall?  I have been looking for a family named Stevens from a hamlet of just 3 or 4 houses named Humbleburn Cottages.  This is close to Craghead and Blackhouse but I think it was in Edmondsley parish.  Catherine's maiden name was Stevens and, in such a tiny hamlet, it seems very likely that she was from that family.  Can anyone give me information on her parents - particularly her father or maybe her brother(s) who also lived there.  She died there, aged 37, on or about 15th August 1939 and was buried in Craghead Churchyard - presumably St Thomas' Church.  Many thanks

Durham / Edward John Jewitt
« on: Tuesday 23 January 24 19:21 GMT (UK)  »
Edward John Jewitt was born in 1875 and died on 16th March 1930 at Medomsley in County Durham which I believe was in the registration district of Lanchester at that time.  At the time of his death he was a publican at the Miners Arms Inn in Medomsley village.

I would really like to know where he was buried but I cannot find a record of him in the village church.  The notification of his death suggests he was buried only three days after his death and also suggests burial was in the village.

Can anyone help with a location of his grave?  He died of a gunshot wound so this may have been a burial in unhallowed ground (if it was a case of suicide) but although there are press reports of his death, I can find no reference to a Coroner's Enquiry or to Police involvement.  Many thanks.

Alderney, Guernsey, Jersey, Sark / William Horace Bougourd
« on: Monday 23 October 23 13:59 BST (UK)  »
He was born 29th January 1860 and drowned in the harbour at St Peter Port, near the White Rock, in October 1939 just 3 months short of his 80th Birthday.  He was still working for the Great Western Railway where he started in about 1896.  He was my Grandfather but I never met him as he died nine years before I was born.

All possessions were left behind when my father and his English born mother escaped just ahead of the German invasion.  Most of the rest of the family were sent to Biberach in Bavaria.

I am hoping that someone can help me find copies of the press reports of his death and possibly even a photograph of him (Yes, I know that is hoping for a miracle!)

Many thanks

Alderney, Guernsey, Jersey, Sark / Hieronym Czyzun
« on: Friday 22 September 23 11:15 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone please help with information on Hieronym Czyzun who served as a pilot with 304 Squadron during WW2.  He was born on 18th November 1919 at Wilno, Poland (now Vilnius, Lithuania) and died at St Ouen, Jersey on 9th February 2003.

I am trying to add him and his story to a tribute site for the men of 304 Squadron but information on him is very sparse.  Many thanks

Durham / John Dixon Dipton Innkeeper 1770s-1780s
« on: Sunday 25 June 23 23:08 BST (UK)  »
An interesting story has recently emerged about the coffin of a young child having been discovered during the partial demolition and rebuild (in 1888) of an old inn in Dipton.  The building is now dedicated to the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides.  At the time of the discovery it was known as the Black Bull but had previously been known as the Rose and Crown.  The exact age of the inn is unknown but it is believed to have been 18th Century and there were coins found near the coffin - one dated 1721 and the others dated 1773.
I have discovered that the landlord's name was John Dixon in 1779 and he had been there for several years before and after that date so he is a definite possibility as the father of the child.  At first I thought it might have been an unwanted stillborn child that had been hurriedly disposed of by an unmarried mother but a press report describes the coffin as an elaborate pattern embellished with tinsel and gilt and ornamental beading - so it was not cheap.
I have no idea why it was buried there but I doubt if it could have been buried without the full knowledge of the landlord.
Can anyone help with advice on a source of information on the landlord as I know nothing about him other than his name.  There was no church or graveyard in the village at the time and the village was more or less split between the parishes of Tanfield and Lanchester.  It is now one village named Dipton but at the time it was the hamlets of Hilltop, Dipton, Collierley and Pontop.  The pub is in what was then Collierley (sometimes called Collierley Dykes).  I am specially interested in his age, his wife's name, their marriage date and the names and dates of birth of any children.  Many thanks.

Durham / Michael McNally, The Fountain Hotel, Consett
« on: Friday 02 June 23 11:22 BST (UK)  »
Michael McNally was born in Ireland c1829 and came to Consett probably at the time of the potato famine.  By 1890 he was running the Fountain Hotel - a failing pub - which he turned around and made a thriving concern.  In April 1892 the pub caught fire and burned to the ground.  He managed to get his wife and daughters and four lodgers out safely.

The pub was back in business the following year and he was still there until 1894 then he dropped off my radar.

Apparently by June of 1892 a plan for the rebuilding of the pub was announced in the Consett Guardian but I have been unable to find that article.  So what I would like to know is whether it was a total rebuild from scratch or whether the building was just patched up and redecorated.  Also, what happened to him after 1894.  He would be 65 that year and may have just retired.  Can anyone help, please?

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Wladyslaw Krzempek

This man was a member of the Polish Air Force in exile during WW2.  He served in 304 Squadron throughout the War then remained in England and founded a jewellery business.  He died in 1983 and this is the best photo his Polish family have.  Could someone please clean it up so that I can send them a better version.  Many thanks
