Wales / David Evans of Ystradgynlais
« on: Monday 19 June 23 19:53 BST (UK)  »
David EVANS was the owner of a foundry in Ystradgynlais and, apparently, an Alderman.
His daughter, Harriet Maude (known as Maude), married my grandfather's cousin, Edward Albert (Bert) BEER.
I am trying to find out more about her family to add to the story of Bert's life.
Maude was born on 14th August, 1885. I have her mother's maiden name as LLEWELLYN, but I have found other names suggested on FamilySearch.
Bert was in the army, but transferred to the reserves before they were married on 29th October, 1912. They obtained permission to emigrate to Australia, where their daughter, Annie Gwendoline (Gwen) was born in 1913 but, at the outbreak of war, he was recalled to the regiment and was killed in 1917. Gwen gave me the information about her mother's death in Sydney.

Kent Lookup Requests / BEER in Cheriton Road Cemetery, Folkestone
« on: Sunday 24 March 19 18:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

Returning from a long break from family history with a little query that you may be able to help me solve.

A couple of days ago I discovered a family of BEERs buried (apparently in an unmarked grave again!) in the above cemetery who died in an air raid on the town in the First World War. Does anybody have any information on this family that might help me link (or exclude) them to my family tree? I'm not sure if it is a mother and 3 children (would seem likely) or if they are possibly all siblings.

Annie BEER aged 30 (from FreeBMD I think she may have been 28)
Arthur BEER aged 11
William (James) BEER aged 9
Annie (Rosie) BEER aged 2

I don't have a subscription to any of the on-line sites to check the 1911 census.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

US Lookup Requests / George BARKSDALE, Charleston, South Carolina
« on: Saturday 08 February 14 00:47 GMT (UK)  »
I'm researching this family for somebody here in the UK and I don't currently have access to US records, so would appreciate a lookup in the US census please.

George BARKSDALE was a planter at Lamprey, in Christ Church parish, S. Carolina, but removed to Charleston in 1780.  In May 1780, his cattle were taken by the army.  When the British troops arrived, the Hessians took over their house in George St as a hospital and it was later used as a barrack and was badly damaged before being returned to George's widow, Elizabeth, at the evacuation.  George died in November 1781, leaving Elizabeth to care for their infant children, one of which had been born deaf.

Elizabeth came to London in the 1780s. One, possibly two, of the children apparently died while they were temporarily living in France in 1790 and, for some reason, were buried in Dover.  Elizabeth re-married in London in 1795 and was herself buried, alongside two of her children, at St Mary's church in Dover.  I am curious to find out if there was a prior connection to Dover or to England.

Many thanks

Derbyshire Lookup Requests / Kenneth ROSE, 1908-1937
« on: Tuesday 15 October 13 20:54 BST (UK)  »
I'm researching this family for a friend who has it from family legend that Kenneth ROSE came from Bolsover.

I have found his birth in 1908, registered in Worksop district, his marriage to Christobel WILLIS in Kent in 1932 and his death in Kent in 1936, but I can't seem to find him anywhere in the 1911 census.  Does anybody have access to local parish registers for the Bolsover/Worksop area?  If I can find the names of his parents it might give me a better chance of finding the family on the census.  I am told his father's name was also Kenneth and he had several siblings: Joyce, Jacky, Tilly, Vi, Geoff, Steve and Dorothy.  He is believed to be the eldest, so most of the siblings would not appear on the census.

Thanks
Bill

Kent / Susannah HOGBEN, c.1796, Dover
« on: Wednesday 14 August 13 23:47 BST (UK)  »
(This may have been asked before by somebody else)

I'm trying to connect Susannah HOGBEN (or HOGBIN), born c.1796 in Dover, with my family tree, but can't find her baptism to confirm her parents.

She married Henry ELGAR in Charlton, Dover, on 23 Nov 1816.  They are the grandparents of Sir Edward ELGAR, the composer.

Durham / 1891/1901 MITCHELL
« on: Friday 19 October 12 21:08 BST (UK)  »
Could some kind soul please check the census for 1891/1901 for me?

I am trying to sort out the children of Joseph MITCHELL (born Newcastle 1867) and Mary Elizabeth (nee PURDY, born Newcastle 1871).  They were married in Lanchester in June 1890.  Their known children, born before 1901, include Jessie, Robert, Margaret and Joseph.  I know from the 1911 census that they had 3 children who had died, but I'm having trouble reconciling the names provided by my late mother-in-law with the birth & death records.

Any help gratefully received!

TIA

United States of America / Crown Point, Idaho
« on: Thursday 18 August 11 11:18 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to track down a burial in Idaho but Google Maps doesn't recognise the location and I can't find it in the Idaho cemetery records.

James BEERS was reportedly buried at "Crown Point, Van Wyke, Valley County Idaho" in November 1898.

Can anybody identify this location?  I want to visit his grave next month while I'm in the NW.

Many thanks, Bill

US Lookup Requests / When and where did they arrive in the US?
« on: Wednesday 15 December 10 17:01 GMT (UK)  »
I have been searching all over the place for a couple of branches of my family arriving in the US from England in the mid-1800s and I can't find them anywhere!  Can anybody help track them down please?  I'm ONLY looking for their arrival in the US - I know what happened to them after that.  Thanks.

Mary Ann FOREMAN (born 1794) - reported to have arrived in 1856, along with several members of her family, including daughters: Louisa FOREMAN, Eliza FOREMAN and Charlotte GRIGGS.  Mary Ann was a widow, as was Charlotte.  They were on the Mormon trail in 1861.

James BEER(s) (born 1854) - reported to have arrived in 1871, but may have been later (but before 1880).  There are reports of him returning to England for a period of time, so there may be more than one record of him arriving/leaving/arriving!  James was a pharmacist.

Best wishes for the festive season,
Bill
