Family History Beginners Board / Edith Mary Baker Bicester
« on: Wednesday 17 April 24 09:36 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find out what happened to Edith Mary Baker after 1911.
Born 17 October 1897 in Bicester.
Mother Florence Baker - Domestic Servant.
No father listed.
Baptised Bicester 12 Oct 1900
1901 Living with Grand parents Edward and Louisa Baker Hadlands Yard. - Adopted
1911 Living 3 Hadlands Yard, Bicester with Grandparents.  - Listed as Grandchild.
Nothing after this.
Not on 1921 census or 1939 register.  Cannot find a marriage or death.  Tried 1939 census with birth date and leaving surname out but nothing.
Looked at Migration and there are some of same name going to Canada and America but cannot believe they are her, no DOBs link in either.

I feel as if I have exhausted all options.    HELP please  :)

Family History Beginners Board / DNA match
« on: Tuesday 26 December 23 13:01 GMT (UK)  »
Happy Christmas

I have been researching my son in laws mothers tree for her 75th birthday in January.  It has been a bit of a rush and so have only gone back a few generations.  The original surname is Urch.  In my search I came across an ancestry member in the Urch tree with a DNA match to me!!!  Obviously this was a huge shock, so I emailed the person but they did not reply.  It states 5th to 8th cousin 8cM across 1 seg.

Can anyone explain this please.

Also if I now go back to my tree  and look at the extended tree going backwards cousins etc should I in theory come across a connection?
I have already found a 1xcousin 3 x removed in my tree that marries an Urch but he is not in my son in laws tree at the moment.

Lastly I have bought my son in law a DNA kit to see if it comes up that we are actually related, if it is the case I was thinking of hiring someone to look at it for me.  Any recommendations from who I might use?

Hope this makes sense  :-\

London and Middlesex / Blythe Yard Whitecross Street
« on: Monday 16 October 23 14:29 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have any information or photos of Blythe Yard Whitecross Street London.  My ancestor lived there and I am assuming they had a shop maybe as he was a Basket Maker in the 1800s.    I have googled it but cannot find any info.  Or a web site where I might obtain any information.  Many thanks

Family History Beginners Board / Strange question maybe
« on: Wednesday 06 September 23 14:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi I have just come across a marriage between my 2 x Grandfather on one tree and my 1st cousin 2 x removed on another of my trees.  Is this legal?  I am struggling to get my head round it.
I can give more detail if needed.  :-\

Family History Beginners Board / Emma Hiett
« on: Thursday 24 August 23 16:38 BST (UK)  »
I am searching for Emma Hiett born 1837 Rodbourne Cheney Wiltshire.  Father Thomas B Hiett mother Hannah Brooks.  On 9th March 1862 she marries Edwin James Badderly born 1840.  She is pregnant and has their son Edwin George Badderly 15 Jun 1862, sadly he dies in 1863.  They have a daughter Bertha Alice Badderly in 1864.  Then Edwin dies in 1863.  I cannot find her anywhere after his death.  Bertha is living with her grandparents in 1871, 1881 and 1891census.  She marries Henry Augustus Elmer in 1895 and they runaway to New York with sister in law Alice Rebecca Badderly.  I have searched for Emma Hiett under Badderly and Hiett, I have looked at marriages and deaths and census's under both names but nothing seems to jump out at me.  There was a death but the person was born 1816 so not the one.  I have just hit a brick wall.  I think she married above herself and perhaps they disowned her after Edwin's death.  I have looked at asylums also but again nothing concrete.  Any help much appreciated.

Family History Beginners Board / Lucy Sylvia Murial Marguerite Arman
« on: Friday 04 August 23 18:06 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find Lucy Sylvia Muriel Marguerite Arman born 24 Jan 1900, Swindon Florence Terrace, mother Emily Louisa Clara Arman, father unknown, I have her in every census including 1921 census when she was a servant in Bristol.  She then married Ernest Henry Andrews born 8 Aug 1890 in Calne Wiltshire, a Fitter.  He was lodging in Bristol in 1921.  That is probably how they met. They married 30 July 1921.  Ernest is in the 1939 register living with his mother in Chippenham, he is a mechanical fitter.  However it states he is single.  I cannot find Lucy after this date.  I have looked at marriages and deaths but nothing that jumps out at me.  I also cannot find what happened to Ernest either.  There are several deaths that are possible but nothing concrete.  Both seem to have vanished.  Emily Lucy's mother is living at 1 Gloucester Street Swindon in 1939 and there is a redacted entry underneath her entry so I do not know who this could refer to.
Many thanks

Family History Beginners Board / Obtaining a will
« on: Monday 31 July 23 12:41 BST (UK)  »
I used to find obtaining a will fairly simple from 'find a will' on the gov web site.  However it has all changed and every time I put a search in it comes up with no results, even though I am sure a will exists.  Am I doing something wrong?   ::)

Armed Forces / 54 Co. R.G.A casemates Gibralter
« on: Sunday 25 June 23 19:30 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace a William Arthur Oliver Pinchin's (dob 1879 Wiltshire) military records.  I think that he was probably not in the 1st WW but prior to it.  He married an Elizabeth Jane (no surname) and they had two children Florence May b.1909 and Audrey Lilian b. 1914, both I think in Gibralter.

In the 1911 census his wife and daughter are listed as follows: - Florence May and Elizabeth J - 1911 England & Wales Census Gender Female Birth Circa 1910 Gibraltar Residence 2 April 1911 54 Co: R G A, Casemates Gibraltar, Overseas military, England Institution description: 54 Company Royal Garrison Artillery.    Elizabeth is listed as being born in Llandrindod Wells, Radnorshire, Wales.

Could anyone explain to me what 'casemates' means and if it is relevant.  I have searched all the ancestry sites in military section but cannot find anything.  No birth records for daughters or marriage for wife and William.
