Durham / Trying to find burial or cremation place for a Maria Charlton
« on: Friday 03 November 23 12:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hello RootsChatters, this enquiry covers a couple of counties but as my 2x Great Aunt was born in South Shields I have placed it here. Maria Thompson was born in 1873 South Shields, she married Robert Charlton in 1923 at Gateshead and Robert charlton died 1937 and is buried in Saltwell cemetery, Gateshead. The last address I have for them is Mayfair Road, Jesmond, Newcastle at the time of Robert's death until Marie's death  where according to her death certificate she died at 'Mount Lands', 3 Enville Road, Bowdon, Altrinchamon on 10 August 1964. I presume at that time it was a nursing home but is now a private residence. Maria's address at her death was 21 Heath Road, Stockport.
Now I can vaguely remember being taken to "Aunt Marry's' house (as she was called to us) as a very small child by my mother and from memory it was a terrace house in South Shields. When speaking to my older brother recently he can remember going to her funeral here in the North East (Newcastle area) and she still had her house in South Shields. What I am trying to find out and help needed is exactly where the funeral took place, he thinks it was the West End crematorium in Newcastle but isn't certain.
As a side note, in her will she allowed each family to take one of her possessions as a memoir, we have a beautiful oil painting by a NE painter. Any help at all would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Paul

The Common Room / Westoe Village, South Shields, Co. Durham
« on: Thursday 12 May 22 10:35 BST (UK)  »
Hello rootschatters, I'm hoping someone has the knowledge or can put me in the right direction. Westoe village in South Shields is in actual fact a street in the Westoe suburb of South Shields. A few of my direct Thompson family lived in this street as recorded in the 1851, 61 and 71 census. On all the original census sheets no house numbers are recorded and I assume they were large houses housing various families in rooms. I am aware that house numbering did not take place until the 1850's. Looking through the records the main occupation of the males were labourers.
Having walked along the street a few years ago all the houses are of 'grand proportions" and a few of them have built dates of the 1890's. So was this a slum area which was habitated by the working class with the houses demolished and replaced late 19th centurary.
If anyone has information about what these houses were I would be grateful.
Many thanks, Paul

Durham Lookup Requests / John Joseph Thompson of South Shields, Help Required
« on: Saturday 07 May 22 10:25 BST (UK)  »
My 2xgreat uncle John Joseph Thompson was born 26/08/1839 to parents Robert & Margery Thompson. He is at home with his parents in the 1841 & 1851 census and I have found him in the 1881 census as a boarder living with an Eliza Miller in Tyne Dock (South Shields) aged 42, a widower and general labourer (all of his male siblings were the same). Also found his death Apr-Jun 1890 (born 1839) However I am unable to find him in 1861 & 1871 census and also a marriage (as stated in the 1881 census that he was a widower). Unfortunately if only using his first christian name it's like looking for a needle in a haystack (to me). At the moment I am not using FindMyPast and relying on Family Search which isn't the best. If any eagle eyed Rootschatters can find anything I would be so grateful. Many thanks, Paul

The Common Room / John William Gilvey OBE Help Required
« on: Thursday 28 April 22 13:03 BST (UK)  »
It came as a pleasant surprise when I received a copy of my great aunts daughters will leaving everything to her daughter and son-in-law, who had been awarded the OBE, as my ancestors mainly were labourers. Googling his name and OBE I could only find one, a John William Gilvey wing commander of the RAF was awarded an OBE in the Queens 1966 birthday honours. Does anyone know how I can find out more information of his military life (assuming it is the correct JW Gilvey OBE) or has the ability to find out more. He was born in 1916 and died 1996, his wife was Dorothy Gillian (nee Witherington) and address at the time of the will was 'Red House', 16 Cotman Rd. Norwich. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Durham / Unable To Find Streets In South Shields
« on: Tuesday 06 July 21 09:27 BST (UK)  »
Good morning Rootschatters, my ancestors are from South Shields/Westoe and I have been compiling streets that they have lived in. I purchased a South Shields 1895 Ordnance Survey Map and have been highlighting the streets they lived in, however a couple are eluding me and I am hoping that someone may be able to assist me.
An ancestor lived in Bath Street in the 1911 census, I have seen a reference to a Bath Street and also an old photo of Baring Street which had (Bath Street) named afterwards. I am thinking as this was/is quite a long street that originally part of it was Bath Street and the other part was Baring Street and at some stage they renamed the whole street as Baring Street. (this has happened to me with my grandfather in Gateshead, same house but different street names in 2 census).
Barker Terrace 1901 census. I am aware that this will be a row of houses in another named street (as this was quite common) but would anyone know which street and whereabouts in the street.
Frost Street Westoe. 1881 census. Can find no information on this street but have come across a 1891 death where the person lived in Frost Street.
Any help would be appreciated to finish off this project. Many thanks, Paul

With help I have found both Bath Street and Frost Street. If anyone knows which street Barker Terrace was on I would be grateful

World War One / Help Required Identifying a WW1 Uniform
« on: Thursday 15 April 21 09:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi Rootsdchatters, help required in trying to identify the uniform of my g. uncle who was involved in WW1. His parents emigrated to S. Africa early 1900's (my g. uncle was born in 1891). The photograph states on the rear 'on leave in UK 29/09/18'. I was wondering if this is a S. African uniform or whether he stayed/returned to the UK to enlist.
Any help would be appreciated. regards, Paul

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Street name on 1861 census
« on: Sunday 11 April 21 10:59 BST (UK)  »
Good morning Rootschatters,
This should be an easy one. I can't decipher the street name on the 1861 census for my g. grandparents. Is it Bargels or Burgels street (or something totally different) in Manchester. My g.grandparents lived at no. 5 Robert & Mary Bullows. The transcript just has 5 ..?...Manchester. Also what area of Manchester as I am not familiar with the city.
Any help would be appreciated, thanking you, Paul Thompson

Durham / Help Required With Trying To Find Marriage
« on: Thursday 11 March 21 13:56 GMT (UK)  »
Trying to find a marriage for my 2x G.uncle George Thompson but drawing a blank. I don't even know if I have the right George Thompson (common name) but without a marriage certificate unable to see if correct.
Information I have is as follows:
GT born 10 April 1845 South Shields to Robert & Margery Thompson (I have the parish record)
1871 census GT unmarried living with parents. Occupation steamship stoker.
Looking through  records I have come across what I think (hope) could be the correct person.
1881 census GT (34) & wife Ann (32) plus children James (11), Edward (5), George (3) & Ann (0).
Living Palatine St. Westoe, South Shields. Occupation: Cartman
The census states that GT, AT & James were born in North Shields, all other children South Shields, but all other census has them all born in South Shields.
1883 death certificate of father has George as witness (he signed with an X), his address is given as 51 Raglan St. Westoe but he wasn't living there in 1881 census.
1883 Ann Thompson b. 28 Dec 1879 d 2Q 1883 (aged 3) mmn Robertson
1891 census GT (47) & AT (46) + Edward (16), George (13) & Mary J (6)
Living at 26 Heugh St. South Shields  Occupation: Teamer
1893 Mary Jane Thompson b. Dec 1884 d. (buried) 6 August 1893 (aged 9) address: 5 Hedley St.S/S  mmn Robertson
1901 census GT (58) & AT (60) + Andrew Robertson (58)- boarder
address: 26 Heugh St, South Shields  Occupation Cartman-General
1911 census GT (67) & AT (70) + Andrew Robertson (68) now brother (should be brother in law?). Address: 125 Palmerson St. Westoe.  Occupation General Carter.
On the 1911 census it states married for 32 years, I can't find a marriage for around that period (1879). It also states that George has been a cripple for 32 years.
As you can see their ages vary in each census (Ann's has gone up by 8 years from 1881-1901)
3 children have mmn Robertson - George, Ann & Mary J.
I can't find births for James & Edward, have tried under Thompson & Robertson, in case she had been married before.
I can't find birth for Ann Robertson, north or south of the Tyne
I probably have the same Thompson family 1881-1911 but is it my George Thompson? Help required before I go crazy!!! Many thanks, Paul
